Part 4 — I signed the divorce papers, but when he brought the babies home, his mother’s smile suddenly disappeared

Christopher ran out of the house, but this time no one chased him. Evelyn locked the door, while the clinic’s lawyer picked up the phone and dialed several numbers.

“We have already sent notifications to the banks,” he said. “The accounts are frozen.”

My phone was ringing again.

It was the company’s financial director.

“Mrs. Lawson, all the employees are in a panic. Mr. Lawson ordered that the documents be erased.”

“Let no one erase anything,” I said. “Save everything and shut down the servers.”

“What if he comes back?”

“This time coming back will not be enough.”

Christopher returned in twenty minutes. He was no longer alone. A lawyer stood beside him, and he held a phone in his hand.

“Victoria, sign a statement that this is a misunderstanding,” the lawyer told me. “Otherwise you will never get custody of the children.”

“Do you still represent him?”

The lawyer looked at Christopher.

“Until you tell me the whole truth.”

Christopher tightened his jaw.

“This is a family matter.”

“No,” the lawyer replied. “This is forgery, financial fraud, and the illegal use of children.”

He closed the portfolio.

“From this moment, I am no longer your lawyer.”

Christopher seemed not to understand.

“What are you doing?”

“For the first time in your life I am telling you what you were doing.”

The clinic’s lawyer played the audio recording once again. This time Christopher’s voice sounded more clearly in the room.

“As soon as Victoria signs, the children and the shares will remain with me.”

Christopher sat down on a chair.

His own voice was fighting against him.

“I did not say it like that,” he whispered.

Evelyn looked at him sternly.

“You said it. And now for the first time you hear how your voice sounds in someone else’s ears.”

That same night the police searched his office. Documents lay scattered on the floor, computers were taken away, while Michelle cried in the kitchen for hours.

I sat beside her.

“You were deceived too,” I told her.

“But I was your friend.”

“You were.”

That one word turned out to be more painful than any accusation.

Michelle lowered her head.

“Do the children want to stay with you?”

“They do not know anything yet. They only need a quiet room and a person who will not deceive them.”

The next morning I returned to my old apartment. Christopher’s things had already been taken away. Two empty places remained in the bedroom where his suitcases had once stood. On the desk in the study, the copper key shaped like a lighthouse still lay.

I picked it up and for the first time did not feel a weight like guilt.

I opened the safe.

Inside I found my father’s letters, old certificates for the shares, and one small photograph. In the photograph I was a child, while Father held exactly that key in his hand.

On the back it said: “Never be afraid to open your own door.”

Three weeks later the court prohibited Christopher from meeting the children alone. The company was temporarily handed over to me, because the audit confirmed that most of its main assets had been created with my family’s money.

I was not happy about his downfall.

I simply was no longer trying to save him for the first time.

Michelle left the city and entrusted decisions connected with the children to the court. She sent me a letter, but I wrote a reply only several days later.

“I cannot erase your pain. But I will tell the children the truth when they are old enough.”

That was the only promise I received from her.

Four months later the children and I moved into a small, sunny house. Two wooden beds stood in the living room. A pot of lavender stood on the windowsill, and every morning the warm smell of milk drifted through the kitchen.

!!!  Part 4 — They Demanded That I Be Evicted from My Own House Because of My Brother, but My Father’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared at the Judge’s Question

I named the boy Luka.

The girl—Nina.

Luka touched everything. Nina held my finger before sleep and calmed down only then.

One evening, when the first snow began outside, Luka drew a house on a sheet of paper. A large yellow lighthouse stood above the house.

“What is that?” I asked.

“Mother’s door,” he told me.

“Why does it have a door?”

“So that no one gets lost.”

That night I looked at his drawing for a long time.

Christopher called me five months later. His voice had changed.

“Victoria, I want to talk only because of the children.”

“Say it.”

“Everything can be started over. I will give you the company back too, if you change your statement.”

“Children are not a bargain.”

“I am their father.”

“Then learn how to be a father without destroying other people’s lives.”

Silence fell.

“Do you still love me?” he asked.

I was standing by the window. Outside, snow was silently covering the yard.

“I am no longer the woman you knew.”

“Is this a rejection?”

“This is the end.”

I hung up the phone.

That same week the court charged Christopher with financial crimes and document forgery. After the case ended, he received a suspended sentence, a large fine, and strictly defined meetings with the children. His company was divided: my family’s share was returned to me, while the rest went into the employees’ fund.

I did not want the director’s chair. I created a small consulting company where I helped women regain financial control. In the very first month my office received three clients.

Every morning I got up early.

I brushed Luka’s hair.

I searched for Nina’s socks.

I often let my coffee grow cold because both children woke up at the same time.

This life was tiring.

But real.

In one year the children told me “Mother” for the first time. Luka said the word accidentally when he could not tie his shoelace. Nina repeated it and both began to laugh.

!!!  Posadili mě před dveře vlastní firmy, ale když jsem vešla do zasedací místnosti, David najednou zbledl

I sat down on the kitchen floor and laughed with them.

Then I realized that Christopher could not take my family away.

He had only shown me where I should not look for it.

In the evening I attached Luka’s drawing to the refrigerator. The yellow lighthouse stood slightly to the side, and the door was open.

I placed the copper key beside it.

This time it did not belong to the safe anymore.

It was the key to our house.

And for the first time, I opened the door.

Missed the beginning?
