My sister did not invite me to the royal wedding, but when I came to her door dressed in uniform, her smile disappeared

I had the live broadcast of the royal wedding playing quietly when six black cars stopped in front of my house and a man dressed in an unfamiliar uniform knocked on the door.

I was holding a cup of cold coffee. On the screen, my sister, Rachel, stood beneath an arch decorated with white flowers and smiled beside Prince Alexander. Chesapeake Bay glittered in the sunlight behind them. I was not at their wedding.

Not because they had forgotten me.

Rachel had deliberately not sent me an invitation.

Three weeks earlier, I called her.

“Rachel, I think the invitation got lost in the mail.”

She was silent for a long time. So long that I immediately understood that nothing had been lost.

“Emily, we are inviting only the closest family.”

“I am your sister.”

The warmth disappeared from her voice.

“You do not belong there.”

“What does that mean?”

“Exactly what you heard. You put me in an awkward position. You are shameful.”

Then she hung up.

And I stood in the kitchen, touching with my fingers the old little copper compass that Father had given me before leaving for naval service. There was a thin crack on its glass surface, but the needle still pointed north. When we were children, Rachel hid in my bed during thunderstorms, and I promised her that we would never lose our way.

That day she decided that my path was too embarrassing for her.

The doorbell rang.

Once. Sharply.

I went to the window and saw six military vehicles. The neighbors were peeking from behind their curtains. Tomato seedlings swayed in the wind in the yard, while the quiet rumble of the vehicles’ engines made the street strangely empty.

I opened the door.

“Commander Emily Carter?”

The man stood rigidly. A golden insignia flashed on his cap.

“Yes.”

“His Majesty requests that you appear immediately.”

“Who?”

“The King.”

My breath caught.

“There must be a mistake.”

“There is no mistake, ma’am.”

He showed me documents. A seal, signatures, security-service insignia. Everything looked genuine.

“Why would the King need me?”

“I do not know the details. I only received orders to bring you.”

I went into the bedroom and opened the closet. Rachel had once said that my naval uniform was too plain for the world she was about to enter. I put on the uniform, fastened every button, and pinned my medals to my chest.

Not to defeat her.

To remind myself of who I was.

!!!  A Few Minutes Before the Operation, My Husband Asked Me to Save His Mistress, but One Question from Me Changed Everyone’s Face in the Room

I rode in silence in the car for forty-five minutes. Twice I asked whether anyone had been hurt. Both times they told me no. Finally I asked whether I had committed some crime.

One of the guards almost smiled.

“No, Commander.”

That answer frightened me more.

When we arrived at the seaside hotel, journalists surrounded the cars. The door opened and every gaze turned toward me. The guests’ expensive dresses and jewelry suddenly seemed insignificant.

At the entrance I saw Mother and Father. Mother covered her mouth with her hand.

“Emily?” she said quietly.

“What is happening?”

“I hoped you would know.”

At that moment Alexander walked toward me.

“Commander Carter.”

“Your Highness.”

“Call me Alexander.”

An elderly man appeared in the hall behind him. Every guest straightened. It was the King.

Rachel stood beside him. A few minutes earlier she had looked like a happy bride on the television screen; now fear was written across her face.

The King came straight to me and enclosed both my hands in his.

“Commander Emily Carter, we have been waiting for you.”

The hall fell silent.

Rachel’s smile disappeared.

The King looked at the guard and said quietly:

“Bring that folder…”

His hand reached toward a dark leather folder…

The guard placed the folder on the table. A small silver anchor was engraved on the leather surface. At that very moment Rachel jumped forward.

“You cannot open that here.”

The King looked at her slowly.

“Why?”

“Because this is my wedding!”

“That is precisely why it must be opened now,” Alexander said.

Mother grabbed me by the wrist.

“Emily, please, do not say anything until we understand what is happening.”

“Eight years was long enough to stay silent, Mother.”

Rachel glared at me.

“You have always wanted to ruin everything.”

“You were the one who did not invite me.”

“Because I knew that in the end they would all start looking at you again!”

Her words caused whispers among the guests. The King placed his hand on the folder.

“This document must be opened only in Emily’s presence.”

“Do not open it,” Father whispered to me.

For the first time I saw not shame in his eyes, but fear.

The guard unlocked it. Inside lay several sealed sheets, an old photograph, and a small wooden box. A familiar smell of sea salt came from the box.

The King took out the first sheet.

!!!  Mi madre me expulsó de la mesa familiar en el resort, pero cuando el director se acercó a mí, su sonrisa desapareció

“Before I read this, I ask you once again, Emily: are you ready to hear the truth?”

I could not say anything.

Rachel stepped back.

And then Alexander’s phone rang. He listened, his face changed, and he looked directly at me.

“Commander, this is only the beginning…”

Alexander ended the call, but everyone in the hall had already realized that the news was not good. The King gestured for the guards to lock the doors. The journalists’ voices could be heard outside, while inside only the ticking of the old clock remained.

The King took a photograph from the folder. A young man stood beside a naval boat in the photograph. I recognized the face immediately.

“That is Father,” I said.

Mother grabbed hold of a chair.

“Emily, please…”

The King unfolded the second sheet.

“Twenty-nine years ago, my brother Luka served on this boat. He had renounced his claim to the royal throne and lived in America. Officially, he was lost at sea.”

“We know that,” Father said.

The King looked at him coldly.

“You know only what you were told.”

Rachel shook her head.

“This is ridiculous. Emily is my sister. She has no connection whatsoever to the royal family.”

The King took out the third document.

“That is exactly what we had to prove.”

The conclusion of a genetic examination was written on the sheet. The King read aloud.

“Emily Carter and Luka, son of Alexander, are direct descendants of the same biological line. The probability of kinship is ninety-nine point nine percent.”

Mother began to cry.

“I did not want this to happen.”

“What did you not want?” I asked. “My existence?”

Father lowered his head.

“Before you were born, Luka wrote your mother a letter. He said he would return. But the royal advisers said that his child would be in danger. They offered us money, a new name, and a promise of oblivion.”

“And you hid me?”

“We protected you,” Mother whispered.

The color drained from Rachel’s face.

“But why now?”

Alexander placed the phone on the table.

“Because this morning the original of Luka’s letter was stolen from our archive. The camera captured the thief.”

“Who was it?” I asked.

Alexander did not look at me anymore. He looked at Rachel.

Rachel pushed her chair back.

“I did not steal anything.”

The King opened the small wooden box. Inside lay an object resembling a copper compass, but older. Instead of north, its needle pointed toward the royal seal.

!!!  My mother forbade my eleven-year-old daughter from coming on Christmas, but panic sounded in her voice after one reply from me

“This belonged to Luka,” he said. “The letter said that if he disappeared, the compass was to be given to his daughter.”

I touched the cracked compass in my pocket. The same mark appeared on the edge of both objects.

Rachel saw this and suddenly fell to her knees.

“I only wanted the letter,” she said. “If Alexander found out who you were, he would cancel the wedding.”

“Is that why you did not invite me?” I asked.

She wiped away her tears.

“I was afraid you would take everything away from me.”

The King gestured to the guards, but before they reached Rachel, Alexander’s phone rang again. This time his face became completely stern.

“What happened?” I asked.

He answered me quietly:

“Another record has disappeared from the archive. The one that says why your birth certificate was hidden.”

“Who took it?”

Alexander turned the screen toward me. The message contained only one sentence: “If you want the truth, come to the harbor alone.”

For the first time, the King let go of my hand.

“It is a trap.”

But at the end of the message was written my childhood name, which only my parents knew…
