Part 4 — My Mother Exchanged My Wedding for a Rich Man, but When the Door Opened, My Mother’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

“Lock the warehouse, control all entrances, and do not let anyone enter inside,” Santiago ordered his assistant.

The firmness that he had hidden while living on the street returned to his voice.

“The police are already on the way,” the woman answered.

“And the fire department?”

“They are there. But one employee says that before that, someone carried several boxes out of the archive room.”

Santiago was silent for several seconds. Then he looked at my mother.

“You will stay here.”

Estela raised her head.

“I am not going anywhere.”

“I am not asking you to leave either. You will simply have to answer for the first time.”

Mauricio reached the gate, but two investigators were already waiting there. He immediately took out his phone.

“I am calling my lawyer,” he said.

“Call him,” Santiago answered. “Just tell him that today he will have a lot of work.”

Mauricio dialed the number. In a few seconds his face changed.

“What do you mean, you are no longer taking the case?”

The voice on the phone was so loud that we also heard several words.

“Mr. Ledes, I cannot defend you in the forgery of documents and the starting of the fire. You are no longer my client.”

Mauricio slowly lowered the phone.

My mother was still insisting that she knew nothing. Just then Santiago signaled to his assistant. The woman connected a small voice recorder to the speaker.

First my mother’s voice sounded in the yard.

“Call Santiago and tell him that Valeria changed her mind.”

Then Lorena’s voice.

“If she refuses, we will humiliate her in front of the people.”

And finally Mauricio’s quiet laughter.

“Fire burns only what you have hidden. When the archives disappear, no one will be able to prove to whom the money belongs.”

Mauricio raised his head.

“This recording is illegal!”

“But your voice is familiar enough even legally,” Santiago told him.

For the first time I heard my mother’s words from outside. It was as if I were listening to another woman. Her coldness, her orders, the sound of my phone being smashed—all of it had remained in that small device.

Estela covered her face with her hands.

“I only wanted you to be protected.”

“Protection does not resemble a lock, Mother.”

That same evening the investigators took Mauricio and two of his employees away. My mother was not officially charged, because it turned out that she had only made false statements and signed the documents for the sale of the house. But the house she clung to so fiercely passed under the bank’s control until the court’s decision.

I went up to my room.

Everything looked as it had in the morning: the blanket thrown on the bed, fragments of the broken phone, shoes abandoned by the door. But the room was empty. My childhood photograph no longer hung on the wall. Mother had taken that down too, probably in order to begin erasing the new life.

There was only one thing on the table—the small copper key.

Santiago picked it up and placed it in my palm.

“It is yours.”

“I thought I had lost it.”

“You have not lost anything. You simply thought for a long time that preserving everything was your duty.”

That night I went to his house. It was not a palace, as Mother had imagined. It stood on the outskirts of the city, a quiet house with large windows, shelves full of books, and a small kitchen. There was not a single golden portrait hanging on the wall.

“Did you really live here?” I asked.

“When I was not working. The rest of the time I lived wherever a person needed help.”

“Why did you not tell me from the beginning?”

He thought for a long time.

“Because I was afraid that one day you would see the money and not my face. But then I realized that you already knew my face when I held only a cardboard cup in my hands.”

Three weeks later the city court declared the forged documents invalid. A case was opened against Mauricio for fraud and deliberately starting the fire. His father was removed from the company because he had participated in the transfers of funds. Santiago did not celebrate the downfall of any of them.

!!!  I Came to My Husband’s Hotel Door with a Surprise, but a Woman Dropped Her Glass When She Heard His Words

“They faced the result of their own choice,” he told me. “And we must no longer live imprisoned by their choice.”

Mother came a few days later. When I opened the door, she was holding an old bag. For the first time she had no made-up face and no loud tone. She only looked tired.

“May I come in?”

I stepped aside.

“You can talk. But you can no longer make decisions in my place.”

She nodded.

“I thought money was a guarantee of happiness.”

“No. But the truth is more valuable than both together.”

Estela lowered her eyes.

“Will you forgive me?”

“Maybe someday. But forgiveness does not mean returning.”

She left, and for the first time I did not feel guilty after her departure.

Six months later Santiago and I opened a small educational center in the same neighborhood where I had first found him. There, homeless people were not given only food. They were taught a trade, given medical services, legal assistance, and money to start a small business.

I ran the administration. In the mornings I heard the children’s voices, in the afternoons women filled out accounting notebooks, and in the evenings Santiago listened to everyone as if each person were important to the whole world.

One day a little boy, Nicolas, brought me a drawing. In the drawing, two people stood in the rain, and between them there was a large red door.

“Is this you?” I asked.

“You and Mr. Santiago. And I drew the door because you opened it for him.”

My throat tightened.

“In fact, he opened the door for me.”

“No,” the child said. “You both opened it.”

On the first morning of winter, thin lines of ice appeared on the center’s windows. I took the copper key from my bag and put it in the drawer of my desk. Now it was no longer an object of fear. It reminded me that a closed door did not always open with someone else’s permission.

!!!  Acepté cuidar a unos gemelos enfermos y señalé el respiradero de la mansión; la administradora dejó caer las toallas y palideció

That evening I received a message from Mother.

“Can we try once more? I have understood everything now. I want you to come back home.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. Then I calmly wrote back:

“You can remain in my life only if you no longer control it. I will not return to the old house. But if you truly have regret, begin with admitting the truth and not with demanding my return.”

No answer came.

Santiago came beside me.

“Are you all right?”

“For the first time, truly.”

He took my hand. Outside, the first snow was beginning; white flakes swirled around the center’s lamps and fell silently onto the ground.

I enclosed the copper key in my palm. The small crescent-moon sign was warm.

This time I opened the door myself.

Missed the beginning?
