I Came to My Husband’s Hotel Door with a Surprise, but a Woman Dropped Her Glass When She Heard His Words

I entered the room and saw that my husband was not embracing another woman — my passport, bank cards, and signed documents were laid out on the table.

My hand was still on the doorknob when Ethan looked at me. The color had drained from his face as if the air had suddenly disappeared from the room.

The woman standing beside him was about forty years old. Her black hair fell in short curls to her neck, and she held a half-full glass in her hand. At that same moment her fingers loosened, and an ice cube fell onto the carpet.

“Mara?”

Ethan’s voice was no longer warm. Now it belonged to a frightened man.

“Surprise,” I said, and barely recognized my own voice. “I think I arrived on time.”

The woman looked at the glass, then at him.

“You said he lived alone,” she said quietly.

Ethan immediately looked toward her.

“Claire, be quiet.”

That one word entered me like a knife. Not because I heard another woman’s name. Because he knew how to silence her.

A heavy smell stood in the room — expensive perfume, coffee, and something chemical that reminded one of a clinic corridor. A blue leather folder lay on the table. Ethan had never had such a folder at home. Beside it lay my passport, open to the page where my signature was visible.

“Why is my passport here?” I asked.

“It is not as you think.”

“No man’s passport should be lying in a hotel room beside the woman who loves him.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“He told me he was divorced.”

“I am not,” I answered. “I am still his wife.”

Ethan came toward me, but I stepped back. The lower part of my green dress caught on my shoe and I nearly stumbled. That was when I noticed a thin, red scratch on his wrist. Claire had a similar mark near her neck.

“You told me that everything would be over today,” Claire said to him.

“Mara was not supposed to be here.”

“But I am here.”

Ethan’s last message was still visible on my phone: “It was a big day. I will go to sleep early. I love you.” His words shone on the screen, while in the room he was telling another woman that he loved her.

Just then the sound of the elevator was heard outside.

Ethan looked toward the window, while Claire pressed the folder to her chest.

“Who is coming?” I asked.

No one answered me.

Someone knocked on the door three times.

Ethan looked over at me, and for the first time I saw that he was not afraid of me. He was afraid of what I did not yet know.

Claire opened the folder and reached for the first sheet…

Claire pulled out the sheet, but Ethan lunged at her and grabbed her by the wrist.

“Don’t you dare,” he told her.

“She must know,” Claire answered. “You have already gone too far.”

Someone knocked on the door again.

“Hotel security,” a voice sounded from the corridor.

Ethan looked toward the door, then at me.

“Mara, listen to me. All of this is a problem with our company. Several documents were оформed in your name, but I will explain everything to you.”

“In my name?”

“Temporarily. Only for safety.”

Claire smiled bitterly.

“Tell her why you asked her to sign the files she had never seen.”

My heart was beating so hard that I thought they would both hear it. For nine years at home I had helped Ethan organize the accounts, but I had never interfered in his business. Now for the first time I understood that my naivety had been a convenient mask for him.

“What files are you talking about?” I asked.

Claire held out the sheet to me.

“Your signature is on this. But this signature became evidence today.”

The door opened. Two uniformed employees entered, and behind them stood a short, gray-haired woman.

“I am Nora Hayes, the company’s internal investigator,” she said. “Mara, we have several questions for you.”

Ethan suddenly shouted:

“This woman is a liar!”

Nora did not even look at him.

“Claire, is the recording on?”

Claire raised the phone.

A file appeared on the screen with a name that stopped my breath: “Mara’s Confession.”

“We did not make this recording,” Claire said. “It was supposed to be handed over to the police tomorrow…”

Claire placed the phone on the table and turned on the recording.

My voice sounded in the room.

“I, Mara Walker, confirm that I arbitrarily transferred money from the company accounts and destroyed all the data.”

I clutched the chair. It was my voice, but I had never said those words.

Ethan lowered his head.

“It is edited,” he said.

Nora calmly opened the folder.

“No. This recording was obtained from a microphone hidden in your office. The voice has been artificially assembled. In the original file only breathing and the sound of the room remained, while the words were pieced together from various old recordings.”

“Who did it?” I asked.

Claire looked at me.

“Ethan. He needed to blame the entire fraud on you.”

Ethan quickly raised his head.

“You must not believe her. Claire is my former employee and wants revenge on me.”

“Former?” I asked.

Claire smiled bitterly.

“I was his financial manager. Then I discovered that he was changing patients’ data in the accounts of the medical program and stealing state funding. When I resisted, he threatened me. I came here today to take the evidence.”

Nora took out a second sheet.

“This is the audit conclusion. Twenty-one transfers went from your joint account to the same firms that Ethan secretly owned. Your signature is forged, but that was not enough for him. He wanted you arrested tomorrow morning.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“Mara, I can explain this.”

“Then explain why there is a ticket for a private airplane lying together with my passport.”

He had no answer.

Claire added quietly:

“He was planning to leave the country. And I was the only person who knew where the final archive was kept.”

The security officer standing at the door took out handcuffs. No one had yet touched Ethan, but everything in the room already looked as if it had ended.

Suddenly Nora’s phone rang. She listened, her face changed, and she came toward me.

“Mara, that call was from Portland. The police went to your house. They found something in the basement that changes all the previous evidence in this case…”
