Part 4 — My wife did not spend the whole night at home, and in the morning I left her a letter — when her friend contacted me, the color drained from her face

The ringing of Selena’s phone could still be heard when two police officers appeared in the warehouse doorway.

“Keep your hands where we can see them,” said the woman standing in front.

I immediately stood in front of Angela.

“She is injured. Call an ambulance.”

“It’s already on the way,” the police officer replied. “But first we need to know who entered here and who took the documents.”

Angela lowered her eyes.

“Two of Marcus’s men came. One stayed outside, the other was with me.”

“Do you remember their faces?”

“One had a scar near his left ear. The other had dark letters tattooed on his wrist.”

Selena handed the voice recorder to the police officer.

“Did you find this at the hotel?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Then this case already has enough grounds for us to go and arrest Marcus Vale.”

I still could not breathe freely.

“Where is he?”

The police officer looked at his phone.

“In the city center, at a bank branch. He is trying to withdraw the remaining money from the account.”

Marcus still thought he controlled everything.

At the hospital, they treated Angela’s wounds. A sharp disinfectant smell stood in the doctor’s room, while drops of morning rain slowly ran down the window.

“Your wife needs several hours of rest,” the doctor told me.

“Can I stay with her?”

Angela looked toward me.

“Let him stay.”

It was one word, but that morning I felt for the first time that there was still a way back.

Marcus was arrested at the bank.

At first he denied everything.

“Griffin signed it himself,” he repeated. “And now his wife is protecting her husband because she is afraid that they will both lose everything.”

His lawyer sat in front of me and tapped his fingers on the table.

“If you use this recording in court, you will have to prove its origin.”

“We will prove it,” Selena replied.

The lawyer smiled.

“You are a journalist, not an investigator.”

“And you are his lawyer, not a magician.”

That evening, investigators retrieved the cameras from the Ashford Hotel. The recording showed Angela entering the elevator with Marcus, and then one of his men carrying away the old phone. In another shot, Marcus stood by my car and took the letter I had left.

But the hardest part came next.

He held my letter in his hand and read it silently.

Then he turned on his own phone and murmured:

“Now everyone will believe that he abandoned her. The woman has disappeared, the husband has left, and the company has been left without an owner.”

They played the recording in the room.

Marcus’s words came back from the walls.

He was listening to his own voice.

At first he held his head high. Then his jaw tightened. When he heard himself saying that our company would be “left without an owner,” the color drained from his face.

“This is not the complete conversation,” he said.

“But it is your voice,” the investigator replied.

“A voice can be edited.”

“That is why we compared it with the hotel cameras, the bank logs, and your electronic signature.”

He had no answer anymore.

Within a few days, the court froze his accounts. The company was assigned a temporary manager, while Marcus was charged with fraud, kidnapping, and threats.

I was not thinking about his punishment.

I was thinking only about how long I had lived with a person whom I considered my own brother.

And our house suddenly became very large.

When Angela returned from the hospital, she went upstairs and opened the wardrobe. The black dress was still hanging there. In its pocket we found a small piece of paper — the hotel room number and the time of the meeting.

“All this began when I was wearing this dress,” she said.

“You are not this night,” I told her.

She shook her head.

“But your letter was what hurt me the most.”

“I know.”

“Why did you write it?”

“Because I thought you had made your choice.”

“And I thought you no longer wanted me.”

We both laughed, but our eyes filled with tears.

Then I told her what I should have said that morning.

“If we stay together, we cannot live as before.”

“I don’t want to live as before either.”

“Trust will take time.”

“I know.”

We slept in separate rooms.

It was not a failure.

It was the first honest agreement in the last several years.

Three weeks later, I reopened the company. Marcus’s contracts were canceled, the bank returned part of the money to us, and insurance covered the rest. The court confirmed Angela’s testimony. No charges were brought against her.

Selena came to us once a week. She always brought mandarin pie and news, but we no longer talked about Marcus.

One evening Angela put a small box in the kitchen.

“What is this?” I asked.

“My old phone.”

“Why did you keep it?”

“So that I never forget how easily the truth can turn into a weapon in someone else’s hands.”

Six months later we moved to a seaside town. The house was small, but in the morning the harbor could be seen from the window. I still managed a logistics business, although after work I no longer opened the computer in the kitchen. I put the phone on silent mode at night. And Angela taught art lessons at the local school.

One Sunday morning, when the first snow fell, our seven-year-old niece, Emma, stayed with us. She drew a house on a sheet of paper, with yellow smoke rising from its roof.

“Who lives here?” I asked.

“People who are still waiting for each other,” she told me.

Angela looked at me from the kitchen.

I could not answer.

That same evening I received a letter from Marcus. It had been sent from prison. It contained only several sentences.

“Griffin, we both know that I did not do all this because of money. You always took what belonged to me. Come talk to me at least once.”

I put the letter on the table.

Angela read it.

“Will you answer?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

I did not tear up the letter. I simply put it in the folder where all the completed cases were kept.

Our marriage did not become perfect immediately. Sometimes Angela woke at night when she heard the sound of the door. Sometimes I checked the clock and the old fear overcame me. But every difficult morning ended with a conversation, not silence.

One evening Angela put the wardrobe in order and handed me the black dress.

!!!  At the family wedding of my ex-wife, I was supposed to go as her sister’s husband, but when Celeste saw us, her smile suddenly disappeared

“I will not wear this anymore,” she told me.

“Will you throw it away?”

“No. I will keep it.”

“Why?”

She ran her fingers over the dress pocket.

“So I remember how we lost each other and how we decided to find each other again.”

Then she brought the small silver earring too, the one Selena had found behind the club. She put the earring into the dress pocket and carefully sewed the fabric.

From that day on, this object stood in a small wooden bowl by the door of our house.

Not as evidence.

As a reminder.

One morning, when the first snow was falling outside the window, Angela handed me coffee.

“Griffin, are you still waiting for me not to return at night?”

I looked at her face.

“No.”

“Why?”

I took the silver earring from the wooden bowl. In the morning light it shone peacefully.

“Because now, if you leave, tell me. If you stay, I will be here too.”

Angela nodded.

Outside, the snow began to fall more heavily.

And inside the house, for the first time, no one was waiting for the door to open in fear.

At last, silence did not close the door anymore.

Missed the beginning?
