Part 4 — Angela left the house at night, and in the morning I left a letter — but Selena’s call froze my hand in place

Daniel dropped the phone from his hand. It fell onto the wooden floor, and the screen was covered with cracks.

“Who did this?” he asked.

The officer picked up the phone.

“Mr. Rose, the investigation is already answering that.”

“No, you don’t understand. These are my accounts.”

“That is exactly why it is interesting that they were found to have been used by someone else.”

Angela leaned against the wall. Thin red marks were still visible on her wrists, left by Daniel gripping them forcefully. Then I realized that she had done two things at once: she had betrayed me and at the same time had tried to escape from Daniel.

But her choice was still a choice.

Selena handed the camera to the officer.

“All the recordings are here. The video from the club’s back door, the hotel corridor, and the conversation in which Daniel says that he wants to put Griffin in prison.”},{

Angela looked at her.

“When did you record all this?”

“When you told me that you were simply going out with friends and might need to spend the night.”

“Why didn’t you stop me?”

Selena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought you were an adult woman and made your own decisions.”

Those words struck Angela harder than the arrival of the police officers.

Daniel tried once again to regain control.

“Griffin, listen to me. We can settle all this. You will get part of the money back. I will protect Angela too. Just tell them that this recording did not exist.”

“What did you expect from me?” I asked.

“You were always calm. You compromised.”

“I was calm because I wanted to save the family.”

“And now?”

I looked at Angela.

“Now I am saving myself.”

Daniel heard what he had said from the outside for the first time. Selena played the final recording from the camera. His voice could be heard clearly there.

“Griffin will need one night to run away. Then we will find the letter, use it against him, and everyone will think that the offended husband arranged everything.”

Silence fell in the room.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I didn’t say it like that.”

“You said it,” I told him.

“No. That is my voice, but I did not say it like that.”

He heard his own words through someone else’s ears for the first time. His shoulders fell. Such emptiness appeared on his face, as if the mirrors in the room had been smashed and he could no longer find himself.

The officers took both of them away. Angela stopped at the door.

“Griffin.”

I did not move.

“Please, explain to me what I should do.”

“For the first time in your life, decide what you want.”

“You are not waiting for me anymore?”

“No.”

I said the word calmly. So calmly that I myself was surprised.

When I returned home, the smell of morning rain still remained. My letter was no longer on the kitchen table. The police had taken it as evidence.

But the small silver earring had remained by the coffee machine.

I picked it up and looked at it for a long time.

Then I went upstairs to the bedroom.

Angela’s pillow lay on the bed. Her black dress hung in the closet, as if it were still waiting for that night. In front of the mirror, the lipstick cap had been left open. Beside it was a dried dark stain.

I did not take everything away.

I did not throw away the dress. I did not burn the photographs. I simply moved her things into the empty room and closed the door.

The heaviest thing in the room was her absence.

Three weeks later the company audit confirmed that the money had been transferred to Daniel’s accounts. Angela denied everything at first, but the recordings, the hotel cameras, and the letters taken from her email showed the truth completely.

It also became clear that Angela was afraid of Daniel. For several months he had threatened that if she did not help him withdraw the money, he would publish the conversations fabricated against me.

That did not justify her betrayal.

But the truth no longer had only one color. It had not all been betrayal. Fear, shame, greed, and the desire to escape were also mixed together there.

Daniel confessed to forgery and embezzlement. Angela admitted the crime, but helped the investigation. I did not want either to humiliate her or destroy her.

I simply was no longer going to save her at the cost of my own life.

In the second month I left only the necessary things in the house. I repainted the bedroom walls. I bought a new coffee machine for the kitchen and took the old one to the warehouse.

I went to work five days a week. I got up at six in the morning, checked the shipments, and for the first time told the employees that if they needed help, they should say so before the problem grew.

Before, I carried everything alone.

Now I no longer did.

Selena sometimes came in the evening. One day she brought a small pot with basil and placed it on the windowsill.

“The smell in the house has changed,” she told me.

“For the better?”

“It is alive.”

For the first time we laughed for a long time.

Four months later I bought a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. A railway line could be seen from the window. The trains made noise at night, but their sound no longer made my heart race.

I was still waiting for the noise that could destroy everything for me.

One morning the first snow came. Before going to work I sat at the kitchen table. White light fell on the basil leaves. I no longer had a suitcase. Only one small wooden box lay on the shelf.

I kept Angela’s earring in it.

Not because I was waiting for her to return.

Because I wanted to remember how easily a person can build his own life around someone else’s decisions.

Six months later she wrote to me for the first time.

“Griffin, my case is over. I have understood many things. If you ever want to talk, I will be ready.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“I no longer need to talk to you. I hope that someday you will be able to talk to yourself.”

I deleted her number.

That same evening Selena called me.

“Do you still think about her?”

I stood by the window. Snow fell on the streetlamps and broke into small bright points in the air.

“Sometimes.”

“Do you miss her?”

!!!  A fiam mellett ültem a 8A ülésen, amikor a kapitány segítséget kért egy vadászgéphez — és a légiutas-kísérő elsápadt

“I miss the woman I thought I had.”

“And now?”

“Now I miss the person I should have become myself.”

The next day a new employee came to the company. He was a young man, nervous, and the order sheets kept falling from his hands.

“I am afraid of making a mistake,” he told me.

I picked up the papers.

“Everyone makes mistakes. Hiding them destroys everything.”

He nodded.

The words were simple, but for the first time in my life I myself also believed them.

That evening, after returning home, I opened the wooden box. I placed the silver earring on my palm. The metal was no longer cold. The smell of basil filled the room, while outside snow quietly covered the street.

I placed a new sheet of paper on the kitchen table.

This time the letter belonged to no one. I wrote only one sentence:

“Today I stayed home because I chose to be here myself.”

I placed the earring beside the sheet.

The small silver circle shone in the light of the snow.

And for the first time in a long while, the door was simply a door — not an exit, not a trap, not the expectation of return.

I locked it.

And peace came in.

Missed the beginning?
