Part 4 — My Stepfather Locked Me in a Room Because of a Loan, but When I Reached the Stranger by the Black Car During My Escape, He Suddenly Stopped Smiling

Luka quietly added that the forged paper had already been examined by someone, and at that very moment a strong blow sounded on the office door.

“Open up! Police!”

Luka turned off the recording and placed the folder in my hands.

“Now it is your choice, Emily.”

“All my life, others chose instead of me.”

I pressed the folder to my chest.

“This time I will open it.”

The door opened.

Two police officers entered, with Ambrosi standing behind them. He was still wearing that gold ring, but the old confidence was no longer on his face. Diana had remained in the car. Probably she thought she would return with me and convince everyone that I had lost my mind.

“Ma’am, are you all right?” one of the police officers asked.

“Now I am.”

Ambrosi raised his hand.

“This woman is clearly in an emotional state. Luka Meladze is deceiving her. We only want to protect her.”

Luka placed the small recorder on the table.

“Then you will probably have no difficulty explaining why you were talking about forcing her into marriage.”

Ambrosi’s face changed.

“This is an illegal recording.”

“The court itself will decide,” I answered.

One police officer picked up the folder and looked through the documents. The other stood in the corner of the office and watched Ambrosi.

“Here is a certified copy of the will, bank statements, and an audio recording,” Luka said. “Also, the handwriting expert’s conclusion. The temporary order is based on a forged signature.”

Ambrosi looked sharply at me.

“Emily, do not ruin your own future. Diana was simply frightened.”

“She told me that my body was the last valuable thing remaining in the family.”

Ambrosi’s mouth opened, but he could not produce a sound.

The police officer stepped toward him.

“Keep your hands where they can be seen.”

“You cannot arrest me.”

“No one has arrested you yet. But now you must come with us for questioning.”

At that moment another woman entered the office. She wore a white coat and held a folder of documents in her hand.

“I am Nino Kavatadze, a signature expert appointed by the court,” she said. “I have already sent a notification about the forged order. Diana Kapanadze is currently wanted in a case of financial fraud and coercion.”

Ambrosi struck the chair with his hand.

“Diana told me everything was legal!”

Luka turned on the recorder.

Diana’s voice sounded in the room again:

“Ambrosi, if something happens, you will say that Emily agreed voluntarily. And I will take the company back.”

This time not only Luka and I, but everyone heard the recording.

Ambrosi stood motionless.

He had not heard his own words, but in Diana’s words he heard his own future for the first time.

“This cannot be…” he whispered.

The police officer put handcuffs on him.

I was not happy.

Justice is heavy even when it has been long awaited. I simply felt that I no longer needed to cover someone else’s crime in order to live peacefully.

Diana was taken from the house that same morning. She called me several times on the way, but I did not answer even once. Later, the lawyer told me that her hired attorney was also refusing the case because Diana had presented him with forged documents.

Ambrosi’s company lost its contracts. The banks froze its accounts. The investigation confirmed that my father’s car brakes had been deliberately damaged. This turned out to be the second piece of evidence Luka had been seeking for six years—an old mechanic’s record stating that Ambrosi’s employee had been in the garage that night.

The case reached court.

But before that, I had to empty one room.

When I returned to my house, it was already noon. The wine stain from that evening could still be seen on the stairs. A single pearl lay in the corridor. I picked it up, held it in my hand, and realized that every object in this house had preserved someone’s lie.

The door of my room still locked from the outside.

I went inside.

The bed was disordered. Raindrops stopped on the cracked glass of the window. On the floor I found what I thought I had lost forever—the silver button with the little crescent moon.

Diana’s things had already been removed from the room. The wardrobes were empty. Only the bright rectangular mark of a photograph remained on the wall, where my family picture had hung for years.

Luka stopped in the doorway.

“Do you want to stay here?”

I looked toward the window.

“No.”

“Do you want to sell this house?”

“Not yet. My father’s voice is still too close here.”

He nodded.

“Then we will find another place.”

Three months later I rented a small apartment in a seaside city. In the mornings, the sound of harbor bells woke me. I began working at a law firm where I checked cases of financial fraud. For the first time in my life, I had a salary in my own name, and no one asked me to marry someone in exchange for it.

Luka called me once a week.

Sometimes he only asked me:

“Did you eat today?”

I answered:

“You still talk as if you were in the investigative service.”

“You still avoid help as you did that night.”

Little by little, I learned that accepting help did not mean defeat.

One evening, my neighbor’s eight-year-old girl, Ana, came to me. She held a colored sheet of paper in her hand.

“I drew this for you,” she told me.

On the paper stood a woman beside an open window. Next to her, a small silver moon was drawn.

“Why the moon?” I asked.

“Because Mother said it shines even on the darkest night.”

I pressed the paper to my chest.

“Your mother is a clever woman.”

Ana sat down on the floor.

“Will you return to that big house?”

“No.”

“Aren’t you afraid?”

The sea was visible through the window. That night, for the first time, I did not need to check the door.

“No. Now I know where the exit is.”

In spring, the court found Diana guilty of fraud and coercion. Ambrosi also received a sentence in the case of my father’s death. The company they thought they had taken over was transferred to independent management, while my fund was fully restored.

I sat silently in the courtroom.

When the judge announced the verdict, Diana looked at me once. There was no fear in her eyes anymore. There was only exhaustion.

“Emily,” she told me in the corridor, “I did everything for you.”

“No, Diana. You decided everything instead of me.”

“If I had not been there, you would not have survived.”

“That is exactly why I had to leave.”

I did not touch her hand.

Nor did I shout.

I simply walked past.

Six months later, on the first morning of winter, I placed a small desk by the window of my new apartment. Ana’s drawing stood on it. Luka wrote to me that he had found the last document in my father’s case—a letter in which Father left me only one sentence: “Never exchange your own freedom for someone else’s peace.”

!!!  The Pink Flowers Found in My Room Made the Mafia Boss Furious, but Then I Saw Something Strange on His Face

Snow fell that day.

In the evening, someone knocked on the door.

A courier stood at the door. He held a small box in his hand. There was no sender’s name, but inside I found a letter from Diana.

“Forgive me. I have no money left. I have no house left. I have only you.”

At the end of the letter was one sentence: “Bring me back into your life.”

I looked at the paper for a long time.

Then I called Luka.

“What should I do?” I asked.

“You already know.”

“She really has lost everything.”

“You did not lose it.”

I went to the window. I ran my finger over the silver button lying on the table. For years I thought it was a sign of escape. Now I understood that it had actually turned out to be a sign of return—a return to myself.

I folded the letter and put it in the folder, without an answer.

The next morning I sent the box back.

The door of my room locked from the inside.

But that day I did not lock it at all.

I placed the silver crescent moon on the windowsill.

And for the first time, in the darkness, I lit the way myself.

Missed the beginning?
