Part 4 — Three Hungry Girls Were Eating Grass on My Lawn, But When One Looked Me in the Eyes, My Fiancée’s Smile Disappeared

Someone was still trying to take them away.

The thought became fixed in my head so firmly that I could no longer stand by the operating-room door.

I went into the corridor and immediately called my lawyer.

“Noah, stop everything,” I said.

“What do you mean?”

“The wedding. Victoria’s access to the company. All her accounts and contracts.”

“Richard, we have to be careful.”

“I have been careful for six years. Now I want evidence.”

Victoria followed me several steps behind.

“You have no right to freeze my accounts.”

“You will lose your rights to the company yourself if it is proven that you altered the archives.”

“I did this for you.”

“The children were eating grass, Victoria.”

She stopped.

“You will never understand how difficult it was to be beside you.”

“I will not understand? Anna spent six years alone. She raised three children. And you would not even let her through my door.”

“You fired her yourself.”

At these words my hand clenched, but I did not touch her. For the first time I did not want to hurt her. I wanted her to feel the weight of her own words.

“You are right,” I told her. “I fired her. But you hid from me why.”

Noah came a few minutes later. He held a phone and a black folder.

“Victoria,” he told her, “I am no longer your representative.”

Victoria froze.

“What are you saying?”

“Yesterday I thought this was a family dispute. Today I saw bank transfers, altered medical records, and camera footage. I cannot defend you in court.”

“You have a contract with me.”

“And a professional conscience.”

Victoria dropped the phone onto the floor. The screen cracked, but the sound could still be heard. The message remained playing.

“If you seek custody of the children, we will take you to court…”

It was her own voice recorded. A few seconds earlier she had said these words in the corridor. My phone had recorded automatically because Noah was already preparing copies of the evidence.

Victoria stared down at the screen.

“You cannot use this.”

“That is your voice,” I told her.

“I did not say it like that.”

Noah played the recording from the beginning.

“We will take you to court.”

A nurse stopped in the corridor. Security heard it too.

Victoria closed her eyes.

For the first time she heard herself through someone else’s ears.

!!!  Mi hermana se burló de mi uniforme el día de mi boda, pero al abrirse las puertas de la capilla dejó de sonreír

She could no longer change the words, because they no longer came from the air. They had come from her own mouth.

“Richard,” she said quietly, “do not destroy me.”

“I will not ruin you.”

“Then what do you want?”

“Never touch my children and Anna again.”

“You are my fiancé.”

“No,” I answered. “I was a man who thought he was happy beside you.”

The operating-room door opened two hours later.

The doctor lowered his mask.

“The operation went well. Zara is stable.”

I leaned against the wall. Only then did I realize that I had been holding my breath all this time.

Anna was sitting on a chair. She still held that little yellow hair clip in her hand. One corner was broken, and red thread was wrapped around it.

“Where did you find this?” I asked.

“Zara had it when they were born. I bought three identical ones. Two were lost. This is the only one left.”

“May I keep it?”

Anna looked at me for a long time.

“No.”

I nodded.

“That is right.”

“Not yet,” she added. “First you must understand that children are not things you lost and are now taking back.”

“I know.”

“You do not.”

Her words hurt, but I stayed.

That night I sat beside all three girls’ bed for the first time. Rain struck the clinic windows. Zoe was asleep, Zoi was folding her blanket, and Zara was still waking up after the anesthesia.

“Are you a father?” she asked me.

The question was simple.

But the answer changed my whole life.

“Yes,” I told her. “If you let me.”

Zara closed her eyes.

“Then tomorrow will we not have grass anymore?”

I lowered my head so she would not see the tears.

“Not from tomorrow on.”

The case against Victoria began several weeks later. The company conducted an independent audit. It turned out that she had not only altered Anna’s record, but had secretly paid the rent for her apartment for years so that Anna would remain in the same neighborhood and the children would stay close to us.

She thought that in this way she controlled everything.

But the transfers showed something else too: she had not helped Anna. She paid the rent in exchange for her silence. Every month she sent money to the apartment owner, and in return received a written promise that Anna would not come to my company or to me again.

!!!  Mi madre cumplía años cuando su novio volvió a irse antes del postre, pero al regresar mi hija, él palideció

The judge gave temporary custody of the children jointly to Anna and me, but I did not try to take the children away from Anna.

“They have a mother,” I said in court. “Now I only want to be in their lives.”

Anna sat beside me. For the first time she was not trying to protect herself from me.

Victoria stood silently in the courtroom. When the judge announced that the investigation against her would continue, she looked toward me.

There was no resentment in her eyes anymore.

Only emptiness.

I was not happy about it.

A person’s downfall should never become the foundation of your happiness.

My happiness was elsewhere.

Three months later I sold the old house and moved to a small brick house in the northern part of the city. There were no high fences, cameras, or a lawn that was cut every day as if even grass had to obey order.

A small garden could be seen from the kitchen window of the new house.

Every morning Zoe counted the mint leaves.

Zoi drew on the walls with pencils, despite the fact that I had explained more than once that a wall was not paper.

And Zara went to the doctor every week and already ran so fast that she could be stopped only with laughter.

One evening, when the first snow came outside, the children pressed their palms against the window together with me.

“Dad, is snow cold?” Zoi asked me.

“Very.”

“Then why is it smiling at you?”

I laughed.

“Probably because I am seeing it with you for the first time.”

Anna came into the kitchen with hot chocolate. We were still not husband and wife. Nor was I asking for that. Trust does not return through words. It is built every day, through small actions.

Anna worked in a small family hotel in the mornings, but now only for four hours. She spent the rest of the time with the children. I changed the way I managed the company, created an assistance fund for employees, and for the first time hired someone who also told me bad news.

The hardest thing was learning to remain with myself.

One morning, almost five months later, a message from Victoria arrived on my phone.

!!!  ČÁST 4 — Zachránila jsem mafiánského bosse před jízdou s jeho řidičem, ale když jsem ukázala na jeho ruce, právník zbledl

“I have lost everything. You were still my family. Meet me at least once. Please.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I showed it to Anna.

“What will you answer?” she asked me.

“Nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

I deleted the message.

There was no need for insults, threats, or a declaration of victory. Sometimes the calmest refusal is the strongest door.

That evening the children were playing in the garden. The grass was wet from the recent rain. Zara sat down on the ground and was looking for something.

“I found it!” she shouted.

She held a small yellow hair clip in her hand. It had the same shape as the one she had had six years earlier, but it was new. I also wrapped red thread around it, because her old clip had already been repaired so many times that it came apart when touched.

Zara fastened it in her hair and ran toward me.

“Am I pretty now?”

I knelt down and hugged all three girls.

“You were always beautiful.”

Anna stood several steps away. There was still exhaustion in her eyes, but no fear.

I looked at the lawn.

The grass was still green.

But that day I understood for the first time that wealth in a home is not what awaits you behind the door.

Wealth is when the door is open to those whom you once could not let in.

And the little yellow clip shone in the sun.

Missed the beginning?
