Part 4 — When Renata Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone, My Father Saw the Folder in My Hands and His Smile Immediately Disappeared

When the call ended, I stared at the phone for several seconds, as if I could find the answer on the screen.

My father immediately took the phone from me.

“You are not going anywhere alone.”

“If I do not go, all the evidence may disappear.”

“You are not evidence, Valeria. You are my daughter.”

For the first time, his voice carried not the tone of a manager, but of a frightened father.

Daniel locked the restaurant door and called the police. Lucia quickly transferred the recordings to a secure device. Renata was still standing beside the chair, clutching her hands so tightly that her nails dug into her skin.

“I know who it is,” she said.

Everyone turned toward her.

“Who?”

“Mauricio’s brother, Tomas. He worked in our group’s technical department. A few months ago, it was he who restored Valeria’s account.”

Mauricio, Renata’s fiancé, had not appeared at all that evening.

Daniel slowly raised his head.

“Where is he now?”

Renata looked at the phone.

“He is not answering me.”

My father looked toward me.

“The police will come. You will stay with me.”

But already the sound of a car braking came from outside the door. Then someone struck the restaurant window with a fist.

“Valeria!” a man shouted. “Take out the folder and everything will be over!”

Renata jumped.

“That is Tomas.”

Daniel sent the waiters toward the back exit. My father took my hand. His fingers were cold.

“Do not look at the window.”

But I had already seen Tomas. He was standing by the glass, his face wet with rain, holding my old work card in his hand.

The police sirens came closer.

Tomas ran away.

Ten minutes later, uniformed people filled the street. Renata stood against the wall and looked no one in the eye. Mauricio finally called. She answered the call and turned on the speaker.

“Renata, do not say anything,” Mauricio said immediately. “My father will help you.”

“You knew?” she asked.

!!!  Part 4 — During the New Year’s party, my son was being chained in the basement, but the sound of my calm steps suddenly wiped the smile from my son-in-law’s face

“I do not know what you are talking about.”

“You knew that you used my account?”

Silence fell on the other end.

Then Mauricio chuckled.

“You asked me for help yourself. Do not play the hero now.”

Everyone heard it.

Renata’s eyes widened.

“I only repeated your own words,” Mauricio continued. “Valeria was weak anyway; using her name would change nothing.”

Renata let the phone slip from her hand.

At that exact moment she heard her own voice from someone else’s mouth. The words she had said to others—weak, cheap, unnecessary—now stood against her, cold and merciless.

Daniel placed the phone in an evidence bag.

“Your fiancé recorded everything in his own words.”

Renata crumpled down against the wall.

I went over to her, but I did not touch her.

“Why did you want to destroy me?” I asked.

She remained silent for a long time.

“Because you were always calm,” she said at last. “Everyone could humiliate you, but you still would not break. And every morning I was afraid that one day everyone would realize who I really was.”

This answer did not resemble revenge. It resembled an empty confession more.

That night the police arrested Tomas, Gustavo, and Mauricio. Ernesto Salgado appeared before the investigators himself the next day. Renata gave a statement. Her father no longer helped her. The lawyer told her that she had the right to remain silent, but she could no longer hide from the consequences of her decisions.

Two weeks later, a new notice appeared on the wall of our company. The loss of eighty million pesos was confirmed. The fraudulent contracts were canceled, property was frozen to recover the missing funds, and the account created in my name was erased by a technical examination.

I was not guilty.

My father removed all hidden cameras from his office and officially presented my candidacy at the advisory board meeting.

“From now on, Valeria will not be only my daughter in the company,” he said. “She will be the person who saw the darkness inside us and did not step back.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Vanessa bloqueó mi granero durante una emergencia y sonrió mientras todos grababan; entonces mi bulldozer hizo temblar su seguridad

I did not want a speech. I only wanted my desk.

When I entered the office, almost everything was in its place. Only one thing had disappeared: the small amber brooch that I had worn on my dress that morning.

I searched the whole room.

I did not find it.

But behind the drawer I found an old photograph—my father and me when I was six years old. I was wearing the same brooch in the photograph. On the back, in my father’s handwriting, it said: When you defend yourself, never forget who you are.

Three months later I moved away from the city. We opened a new branch of the group in a seaside city, where the smell of salt came through the window in the mornings and street vendors sold warm bread.

My workdays no longer began with silent suspicion. They began with arranging papers, listening to employees, and a small cup of coffee whose handle was slightly broken.

On Sundays my father came to visit me.

One morning my seven-year-old nephew, Niko, sat at the table and handed me a drawing. It showed a large house, the sea, and a woman. The woman had a small yellow dot on her chest.

“This is you,” he told me. “I drew you here so that you would not be afraid anymore.”

“Was I afraid before?”

Niko shrugged.

“A little. Now you are not afraid.”

Sometimes children understand more than adults.

On the first day of winter, snow came. I was standing by the office window and teaching a new employee to read a contract when I received an unknown message on my phone.

It was Renata.

She wrote that she wanted a new life after being released from prison. She told me that Mauricio had left her, her father had broken off contact with her, and now for the first time she understood what it meant to be alone.

At the end she wrote: Maybe someday we will meet. This time I will listen to you.

!!!  When I accidentally called the mafia boss “darling” in his office, all four guards in the corridor fell silent at once

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote her only one sentence:

“I will no longer listen to you, but I hope that one day you will at least hear your own voice.”

I sent the message and closed the phone.

I no longer needed her to ask for forgiveness in order to be free.

That evening I opened the desk drawer. The brooch that I thought I had lost forever was lying there. It had probably slipped behind the photograph, and I had not noticed it then.

I pinned it to the dress.

I went to the window. Snow was quietly falling on the seaside street, as if the whole city were learning to breathe silently for the first time.

My father called me.

“How are you, my child?”

I touched the brooch and smiled.

“Now I am truly all right.”

Snow was melting on the window.

And for the first time, I was no longer proving to anyone who I was.

Missed the beginning?
