Part 4 — My Husband Declared Caring for His Mother to Be My Duty, but After One Answer from Me, His Mother Covered Her Face with Her Hand

I stared at the message for a long time.

Mauricio immediately approached me.

“Who wrote to you?”

I moved the phone away from his hand.

“That is no longer your business.”

“Nino, do not complicate things.”

“You complicated everything on the day you signed in my father’s name.”

Elena slowly stood up. Her knee hurt, but now she was helped more by her own firmness than by the cane.

“Mauricio, get out of this house.”

“Mother, are you on her side too?”

“I am on the side of truth.”

Mauricio looked first at me, then at his mother.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

“For the first time I know exactly what I am doing,” I answered.

He took his jacket. He pulled the door handle down so hard that the sound of metal rang through the entire hallway.

“You will regret this.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But I will no longer bear the consequences of your choice.”

The door slammed.

Elena sat on a kitchen chair. For several minutes neither of us said anything.

Then she asked me quietly:

“Did you really not help my son care for your father?”

“No.”

“I thought you yourself would not let him.”

“He said it was my choice.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“He told me the same thing. As if I were weak, and you were obligated.”

That night I put Mauricio’s things remaining in the room into one bag. His old watch, which lay beside the bed, sounded harshly every minute. Before, I had not noticed that sound. That night every tick told me how many years I had lost.

In the morning I did not go alone to the old clinic. Mariana and Mr. Sandro went with me. The clinic where I had cared for my father during his last years was almost empty at seven in the morning. A strong smell of disinfectant stood in the hallway.

There I was met by Oscar, the clinic’s former accountant.

“I wrote to you,” he said.

“Why now?”

He placed a small wooden box on the table.

“Because your father asked me to give it to you after his death only when Mauricio signed his hand over your property once again.”

!!!  იძულებით გავყევი ბოსტონის ყველაზე საშიშ კაცს, მაგრამ როცა მან სიმართლე მოისმინა, მისი სახე უცებ გაფითრდა

Inside the box lay a small memory device and a letter written in my father’s hand.

The letter said: “Nino, if you are reading this, it means I did not manage to tell you everything. You were never obligated to give up my pain for someone else’s wishes. Return home the way people return to themselves.”

I pressed the letter to my heart.

Oscar turned on the device.

My father’s weak but clear voice sounded.

“Mauricio told me that Nino temporarily needed money and documents. I told him I did not trust him. He answered that Nino would lose everything if I went against him.”

Mariana lowered her eyes.

Mr. Sandro said quietly:

“This recording is enough for the case to officially begin.”

That same morning Mauricio made twenty-eight calls.

The first one was his.

“Nino, let us meet. Everything can still be fixed.”

I answered the second call.

“What do you want?”

“You know too that no one needs to go to prison.”

“I no longer decide that.”

“You can withdraw the statement.”

“No.”

“We are still husband and wife.”

“You should have remembered that word when you were secretly encumbering my father’s house.”

Silence fell.

Then he said:

“I did this for the family.”

This time I recorded his own voice and sent it to him.

“Listen to me. These are your words.”

That evening police investigators came to our house. Mauricio tried to return, but I did not open the door for him. He stood in the hallway and loudly repeated that everything was a misunderstanding.

Mr. Sandro stood beside me.

“Mauricio, there is nothing left for you to clarify here. The documents have been seized. The court will decide the rest.”

Mauricio heard his own voice from someone else’s phone for the first time. In the recording he calmly and confidently said that I would check nothing and that everything would be done behind my back.

An expression appeared on his face as if he were hearing those words for the first time.

“I did not speak like that,” he whispered.

“You did,” Elena said. “And I will no longer let you forget it.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mis padres me prohibieron entrar en Acción de Gracias después de salvar su casa, pero una llamada hizo que mi hermana palideciera

In the following weeks the case officially began. The loan agreements were suspended. My father’s house remained my property. Elena handed the management of her property over to an independent lawyer and renounced all financial authority to Mauricio.

Mauricio’s lawyer refused to defend him the very next day. Another lawyer told me that the case was complicated, but the evidence appeared sufficiently strong.

I felt no revenge.

Only exhaustion.

At the first court hearing Mauricio did not raise his eyes. The charges were officially read to him. The final decision was announced months later: forgery, fraud, and an attempt to illegally encumber another person’s property were confirmed. He received a suspended sentence, a large fine, and an order to repay the debt in full. He did not go to prison, but he could no longer control anyone as he had before.

Elena and I emptied the house that same week.

I cleared Mauricio’s room the fastest. I left only one thing on the bed: his cracked watch. Then I took it back and threw it into the trash.

I stood for a long time in the empty room.

The mark of our wedding photograph remained on the wall. The picture had already been removed, but a bright rectangular spot was still visible on the dusty wall.

Elena did not want to stay with me.

“You must begin your life again,” she told me.

I found a small apartment in Puebla’s old district and started working again. In the mornings I went to an administrative job, and in the evenings I handled matters concerning my father’s house. On Sundays I went to Elena. We drank cinnamon tea together and, for the first time, talked not about Mauricio but about us.

Three months later I turned a small room in my father’s house into an office. The mountains of Atlixco could be seen from the window. Father’s letter lay on the desk. Beside it I placed the copper key.

One day my niece, Lucia, came to me. She was seven years old and held a sheet of paper in her hand.

“Aunt Nino, I drew this for you.”

There was a small house on the paper. A large red bird was drawn on the door.

!!!  Ich musste trotz Schwangerschaft die Villa bewachen, doch als der Hausherr nach fünf Jahren zum ersten Mal zeigte, auf wen er deutete, erstarrte jeder

“Why did you draw this?” I asked.

“Because now you protect Grandfather’s house again.”

The child’s words affected me more strongly than all the court’s decisions.

I hugged her.

“Now no one will take the house from you again,” I told her.

“Mauricio will not come either?”

Outside the window, the first snow was beginning.

“If he comes, the door will not open.”

Several weeks later I received a letter from Mauricio. It was short. He wrote that he regretted it, that he had changed, and that there was still a chance to save our marriage.

At the end there was one sentence: “You cannot manage without me.”

I folded the paper and looked at Elena.

“Will you answer?” she asked me.

“Yes.”

I wrote him only one sentence:

“Without your help I learned to live; without your return I choose freedom.”

I sent the letter and put down the phone.

That night I locked the door of the house. I turned the key in the lock and felt the small copper bird in my palm.

Father’s old key was no longer a sign of a lost past.

It became the voice of my house.

And this time the door opened only for me.

Missed the beginning?
