Part 4 — The day after I retired, my daughter-in-law assigned my lakeside house for summer plans, but her smile disappeared at my answer

…and understood that everything was not over yet.

The phone lit up again.

The second message was shorter: “You do not know how much you can lose.”

Elliot asked quietly:

“Who sent it to you?”

“I do not know.”

Siena stood beside the door. For the first time during all these days she was no longer trying to maintain the face of an angry person. Her jaw was trembling.

“This is not my matter,” she said.

The officer looked toward her.

“Ma’am, that is exactly what we will find out at the station.”

“I did not threaten anyone.”

“A threat does not happen only through words,” I told her.

Meriam closed the folder.

“Siena, you need to speak with me now.”

“You are my lawyer. Protect me.”

“That is exactly why I am telling you not to say anything else.”

Siena looked at her and understood that this time Meriam was no longer standing on her side either.

“Are you against him too?”

“No,” Meriam answered. “Do not force me to defend you against yourself.”

Siena left with the police officer. On the veranda, the heel of her shoe struck one of the boards and a short, sharp sound rang out.

Elliot was still standing in the kitchen.

“Should I go with her?”

“If you want, go.”

“What will you do?”

“I will call Mirian. Then I will hand over all the messages.”

“Dad, I did not want your house.”

“But your silence gave her power.”

He nodded. Then he took out his phone and called Siena.

“I am not speaking against you,” he told her.

Her voice from the other side was so loud that the words could be heard in the room too.

“If you do not deny everything, we will lose everything!”

Elliot closed his eyes.

“We have already lost what was most important.”

He ended the call.

Just then Mirian arrived. He held a black umbrella, although rain had not yet begun outside.

“Did you save the messages?”

“Yes.”

“Someone took this photograph from inside. The file data shows that it was taken the previous evening.”

Elliot raised his head.

“Siena had an additional key to the house.”

Mirian looked at him.

!!!  Soțul meu a ridicat pumnul în noaptea nunții, dar când m-am întors spre bancă, avocatul lui a încetat să zâmbească

“Who else?”

Elliot could not answer.

Then everything came together at one point. The small copper whistle that hung on the shelf in the hallway was found behind the door. The next morning I saw a small light inside my bedroom closet, one that I had never installed there.

A camera.

A small black device disguised like a can of varnish.

Mirian immediately called the investigative team. Within several hours it was established that the camera had been bought in Siena’s brother’s name. That same brother had access to the email from which the loan application had been sent in my name.

Siena denied everything.

But her denial already existed in the recordings.

In the police room, that same evening, they made her listen to her own voice.

“We have to make William think that he can no longer live alone.”

Siena stared at the screen.

“This is edited.”

Meriam answered calmly:

“Audio examination confirmed that it is not.”

“You are my lawyer!”

“I was. Now I advise you to find another defender, because I cannot say in court that this voice is not yours.”

For the first time Siena heard her own words from someone else’s mouth—cold, calculated, cruel. The people in the room said nothing. She, meanwhile, gripped the chair with her hands so tightly that her fingernails turned white.

“I was helping the family.”

“No,” Elliot said, standing at the door. “You were controlling the family.”

That night I returned home alone.

The bed in the master bedroom was untouched. Gordon’s boxes were gone. In the guest room only one thing remained—a small white shawl left by Beverly, hanging over the back of a chair.

I picked it up and opened the window.

The lake air filled the room.

My copper whistle lay on the same shelf. Until then I had thought it only reminded me of the factory’s past. Now I understood that all this time, in my hand, it had signified not fear but choice.

In the following weeks I received many calls.

The bank canceled the application.

The police entered the camera and email materials as evidence in the case.

The court ordered Siena to stay away from my house and to surrender her personal belongings until the investigation was complete.

!!!  Beim Familiengrillfest zwang mein Mann mich, mich bei seiner Tochter zu entschuldigen – dann sah er, was auf dem Küchentisch lag, und erstarrte

Mirian asked me:

“Do you want Elliot to be involved too?”

“He is already involved. He is simply telling the truth for the first time.”

Elliot stayed with me for several days. In the mornings he quietly made coffee and sometimes looked toward the lake. Many things between us had broken, but we no longer tried to hide every crack.

“Dad,” he told me one morning, “if you ever need my help again, please call me.”

“Help is help when it is not followed by taking your life away.”

“I know.”

That little word was not enough to repair the past, but for the first time it seemed to me that perhaps we could build something in the future.

Three months later the court found Siena guilty of attempted property fraud, covert surveillance, and use of a forged signature. She was not sentenced to imprisonment, but was given a large fine, a long-term restraining order, and electronic monitoring. Her parents moved to another city. Gordon apologized to me by letter, while Beverly took the shawl back and told me only one sentence:

“We also thought that we had a place in this house.”

“Everyone has a place,” I answered. “But you cannot obtain it by taking someone else’s place away.”

I was no longer angry.

Anger is too heavy for a person who wants to walk freely.

Six months later I worked four days a week in a woodworking shop in the small town. In the mornings I first went to the lake, then lit the stove and arranged the worked boards against the wall. I planted a small garden beside my house. The tomatoes came up late, but they came up nevertheless.

Elliot came every week. Once he came with his seven-year-old daughter. The girl drew a house in the sand and drew a sun on its roof.

“Grandpa, can we live here?”

“You can visit me whenever you want.”

“And no one will take your house away again?”

I knelt before her.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because now everyone knows where the door is and who the key belongs to.”

She wrapped her arms around me with a laugh.

The first snow came at the end of November. It fell quietly on the roof and covered the wooden path in white. That evening I received one last message from Siena on my phone.

!!!  Soacra mea a cerut banii moșteniți, iar când am rostit un singur adevăr, fața ei s-a golit de culoare

“Everything is over. Perhaps we could meet once and talk calmly. I have changed.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Earlier I would have answered such a message immediately. I would have tried to neutralize her anger, calm her fear, and take onto myself the chaos she had created.

But now I wrote only one sentence:

“Your change no longer begins at my house’s door.”

Then I deleted the message.

Not because I hated her.

Because I was no longer obliged to protect her from her consequences.

At night I went out onto the veranda. The lake was almost frozen. From far away came the light cracking of ice, like the sound of old iron under tension.

My copper whistle lay on the shelf. Its surface had been worn away by years, but white grains of snow had become caught in its little holes.

I picked it up.

Once, at the factory, I announced the beginning of shifts with this whistle.

Now for the first time I blew it not to warn anyone, but so that I could hear myself.

The lake carried the sound far away.

I returned home and locked the door from inside.

This time I was waiting for no one.

Missed the beginning?
