Part 4 — They Locked My Wife Out of Her Own House, but After One Sentence from Me, My Son’s Face Went Pale

The phone froze in my hand.

Everyone in the room was looking at me.

“Who was it?” Linda asked.

The call had already ended.

Ethan stood by the wall and breathed as if there were no air left in the room.

“Don’t go alone,” Marco told me.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Dad, please don’t interfere. Everything will be resolved.”

“You already said that.”

“I simply needed money.”

“For stealing the house?”

He lowered his eyes.

Ashley ran toward the door, but Marco blocked her way.

“No one is leaving until the police arrive.”

“You have no right!” she shouted.

“I have the right when a forged power of attorney, a recording, and bank documents are lying on the table.”

Marco picked up the phone and called the police.

Ethan sank into the armchair.

His hands were trembling.

And I felt a strange calm come over me. Not because my son was in danger. Because for the first time I was no longer trying to fix everything in his place.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Ethan immediately stood up.

“This is a family matter,” he said.

One of the officers asked about the recording.

Marco handed over the recorder.

“You cannot take it without a lawyer,” Ethan said.

“The lawyer is already on his way,” Marco replied.

Just then, his phone rang.

Hope appeared in Ethan’s eyes, and he answered quickly.

“Hello? David, I need you to come here. Right now.”

His face slowly changed.

“What do you mean, you’re not defending me?”

I could no longer hear the answer on the other side, but everyone could hear Ethan’s words.

“You told me the documents were enough!”

A pause.

“I have no money left, David!”

Another pause.

“Don’t leave me now.”

He lowered the phone.

“The lawyer isn’t coming,” he said quietly.

Marco nodded.

“Because he knows that he himself also took part in this matter.”

The next morning, in a small bank hall, Ethan heard his own voice in front of others for the first time.

The recording was turned on.

“I got Mother to sign when she was confused from the medicine.”

Sitting in front of him were a bank representative, two investigators, Marco, and us.

The recording continued.

“Change the code before the old people are home.”

Ethan buried his head in his hands.

“Turn it off,” he whispered.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I don’t speak like that.”

“But you do speak like that.”

It was the heaviest moment.

His words were no longer a voice hidden in a phone, which only Linda and I could hear. Now they stood on the table, like evidence.

The bank canceled the loan agreement because the signature had been obtained illegally. The police arrested Ethan and Ashley. An investigation was also begun against Marco.

I did not rejoice.

Linda squeezed my hand.

“You did the right thing,” she told me.

“He is still our son.”

“He is our son, but his actions no longer belong to us.”

When we returned home, everything in the kitchen stood as it had the previous evening. The measuring tape still lay on the table. Small rings of dust had formed in the wine glasses.

There were no longer any of Ethan’s things in his room.

Ashley took everything away, except for one photograph that you found on the floor. In the photograph, Ethan was six years old and sitting on my shoulders. He was holding a small wooden airplane.

Linda picked up the photograph.

“Shall we leave it?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because erasing the past does not mean justifying it.”

Then I learned that when Ethan was a child, he often asked me why I kept the copper swallow key in my boot.

That night, I did not hide the key for the first time.

Three months later, we moved to a small seaside town. Linda planted flowers by the window in the morning. And I worked four days a week in a workshop, making old wooden furniture.

The new house was small, but the door had an ordinary lock.

It did not need a code.

Every morning Linda made tea. I turned on the old radio. On Sundays, I taught the neighbor’s girl, Nia, to make small wooden figures.

One day she drew our house.

In the picture, the door was wide open. Two people stood in front of it, holding hands.

“Is that you?” I asked.

“You and Linda,” she answered. “No one can throw you out here.”

At these words, Linda lowered her head so I would not see her tears.

The first snow came in winter.

That same day, I received a letter from Ethan. He wrote that he regretted it, that he blamed Ashley for everything, that he missed his family, and that if I could, I should come at least once.

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Linda asked me nothing.

“Will you write him a reply?” was all she said.

“Yes.”

“What?”

On the paper I wrote: “Your punishment is not me. Recover, but do not ask me to return to our house.”

Then I put the letter into an envelope.

I did not add anger.

Nor a threat.

Only a boundary.

In the evening I entered the workshop. The copper swallow key lay on the workbench. Its surface shone warmly in the light of the snow.

Linda looked in at me through the doorway.

“Do you still keep it?”

I took the key in my hand and placed it on a small wooden shelf beside the open door.

“I no longer hide it.”

It was snowing outside.

Our door remained open.

And this time no one stood behind it who could drive us out of our house.
