My Wife Asked Me to Leave the House Because of Her Mother, but When I Picked Up the Suitcase, I Saw Fear on Her Face for the First Time

That evening my mother-in-law contacted my client to remove me from the most important project of my career, while my husband stood beside her and remained silent.

On the table lay the letter confirming the restoration project of the Merida hotel. Ten weeks. An old hotel, a historic building, and the biggest chance of my career. If everything went well, I would be accepted as a partner in the firm.

Mercedes placed the wineglass on the table.

“I am thinking only about the family, Camila. Being in another city for ten weeks is no longer married life.”

“I will be there two or three days a week,” I answered. “The rest of the time I will return home.”

She looked at Julian.

“Tell her to send another architect.”

Something cold and heavy descended inside me. She was still waiting for his answer. Not mine.

“Julian, this was our decision,” I said.

“My mother is simply worried.”

“No. She is giving you an order, and you are turning that order into advice for me.”

Mercedes smiled irritably.

“You always turn everything into a battle. In this family people yield to one another.”

I already knew what that word meant. “Yielding” always meant that I had to yield.

Mercedes had a spare key to our house. Her “emergency” meant entering my apartment on Saturday, changing the places of the plants, taking out my bookshelf, or leaving food in the refrigerator while I was in a video conference.

Once she turned my study into a guest room. She had small white labels stuck to the boxes, as if my things already belonged to someone else.

“I will talk to her tomorrow,” Julian told me.

Tomorrow never came.

And I wrote everything down in a small leather notebook: the date, what happened, what I asked for, and what Julian answered. The notebook’s cover had a golden corner that pricked my finger every time I turned a page.

Renata, my friend and a lawyer, read the notebook silently.

“What is your real boundary?” she asked me.

I remained silent for a long time.

“If Mercedes interferes in my work or our house one more time, and Julian again asks me to give something up for her, I will leave.”

Renata did not say that I would divorce my husband. She only rented me a small apartment for three months near my office. I left several clothes, copies of my passport, and documents there.

I put the suitcase in the closet. Empty, but ready.

Nine days passed.

That night Mercedes suddenly said after dinner:

!!!  I Entered the Forbidden Compartment to Save a Child, but When the Billionaire Saw My Bag, the Color Left His Face

“I called an acquaintance in the hotel group. I told them to bring in another architect instead of Camila.”

My fingers clenched under the table.

“You contacted my client?” I asked.

“I tried to help.”

“You call trying to destroy my career help?”

I looked at Julian again.

He sighed.

“My mother does not need permission to worry about this family. If you cannot accept that, perhaps you are the one who should leave.”

I did not cry. I only smiled.

“Fine.”

Mercedes thought she had won. Julian did too.

Neither of them knew that upstairs, behind two shoe boxes, the suitcase prepared nine days earlier was waiting for me.

I went upstairs. I put in my passport, computer, and leather notebook. I left the ring on my finger.

Julian came up the stairs.

“Since when have you been preparing this?”

“Since the day I realized that your promises lasted only until your mother became angry.”

“Camila, do not make this into something bigger than it is.”

I pulled the suitcase zipper all the way up.

“For three years everything is small when it happens to me.”

Mercedes’s voice came from below:

“Camila, do not make a scene!”

I went down the stairs, put the key on the console, and took hold of the suitcase handle. Julian stood in front of me.

“Where are you going?”

“Where a spare key does not mean permanent rights.”

He reached toward the suitcase, but at that exact moment the doorbell rang. Julian stopped. Mercedes knitted her brows.

I went to the door and slid the lock. Beyond the threshold stood Renata, holding a dark-colored folder.

“Camila,” she told me, “before you leave, you need to see this…”

Renata entered the house and locked the door as if a storm were raging outside.

“What is this?” I asked.

“First tell me whether Julian knows that Mercedes called the client.”

“I just found out.”

Renata placed the folder on the table. Mercedes immediately stood up.

“This is a family matter. Nobody invited a stranger here.”

“I am not a stranger,” Renata answered calmly. “And this matter is no longer only a family matter.”

Julian stared at the folder.

“Camila, what are you doing?”

“I am doing nothing. Your mother did it.”

Renata took out the first sheet, but did not open it.

“This document will be signed only if Camila leaves the house today and gives up leadership of the project.”

Mercedes’s face changed.

“Nonsense.”

“Then why did your acquaintance from the hotel group ask you to confirm this?” Renata asked.

The ticking of the clock sounded in the room. Julian turned toward me.

“Did you plan all this in advance?”

“I only stopped planning to lose myself.”

Renata opened the sheet. But before that, Mercedes suddenly raised her hand and knocked the folder from the table.

The papers scattered across the floor.

One of them stopped at Julian’s feet. He looked down, turned pale, and said in a whisper:

“That is my signature…”

I bent down beside him, but Renata took hold of my arm.

“No, Camila. Not yet. You have not seen the most important paper yet.”

The sound of car brakes came from outside. Someone quickly approached our door. Renata looked at her phone and her face tightened.

“They are already here,” she said. “And if the door opens now, no one will have a way back…”

After Renata’s words, someone knocked three times on the door.

Mercedes looked at Julian.

“Do not open it.”

“Who are they?” I asked.

Renata picked up the folder and opened the door herself. On the threshold stood Mr. Salgado, the financial director of the hotel group, and a young woman. The woman held a small recorder.

“Mr. Salgado, why have you come here?” Julian asked.

“Because your mother’s call gave our management false information,” he answered. “She said that Camila was leaving the project for family reasons and that the firm’s assignment should no longer be given to her.”

Mercedes lifted her head.

“I only told them that she would not often be at home.”

The young woman turned on the recorder.

Mercedes’s voice sounded through the room, clear and cold:

“Camila is emotionally unstable, uses decisions against her husband, and clings to this project only to prove her own ambition. Julian agrees that someone else should be appointed instead of her.”

Julian leaned against the chair.

“I did not say anything like that.”

Renata took a sheet from the folder.

“You did. In writing. This is your electronic consent that you cooperated with Mercedes in removing Camila from the project. It says: ‘For peace in the family, this is the best solution.’”

“I only…” Julian lost his voice. “I thought it would be temporary.”

“Temporary?” I asked. “Was my name, my career, and my contract temporary?”

Salgado turned toward me.

“Mrs. Camila, we have already checked all the correspondence. You remain the project leader. More than that, the firm has decided to support your nomination for the position of partner.”

!!!  Mi suegra llegó sonriendo mientras mi cuñada forzaba la caja fuerte, pero al volver mi esposo dejó de respirar

Mercedes gave a short laugh, but it stopped immediately.

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

“No,” I said. “This was an attempt to take my life away.”

Julian’s eyes filled with tears.

“Camila, stay at home. I will talk to Mother. I will change everything.”

“You have already told me those words many times.”

Renata handed me the final document. It was an official letter stating that the hotel group considered Mercedes’s call an attempt at pressure and would conduct further communication only with me.

At that moment the phone rang. The name of my firm’s director appeared on the screen.

“Answer,” Renata told me.

“Camila, you must go to Merida tomorrow. But we have one problem,” the director told me. “Today someone sent a project-cancellation letter in your name. The letter bears your old electronic signature.”

The room fell silent.

Julian slowly looked at Mercedes.

For the first time Mercedes could not say anything.

And Renata asked only one question:

“Who accessed Camila’s work computer?”

Julian’s face turned gray. The house keys fell from his pocket, and from the other room came the sound of a computer being switched on…
