On the Evening of My Engagement, I Saw Four Boys Repeating My Childhood Habit — and Their Mother’s Look Made My Mother Turn Pale

Several hours before the engagement party, I saw four little boys in the restaurant restroom repeating my childhood habit in front of the mirror. That evening, in one of New York’s most expensive restaurants, everyone had already planned my future except me. A gray suit had been made for me on Madison Avenue. On my white shirt I wore my grandfather’s silver cufflinks, each engraved with a small compass rose. A diamond ring lay in my pocket. At eight in the evening, in the family’s glass garden overlooking Central Park, I was supposed to propose to Vanessa Caldwell.

This was not a romantic evening. It was a deal that was supposed to hide its real name with champagne.

When I entered the restroom, four boys were standing at the sinks. They were about six years old and wore identical dark-blue sweaters. At first I noticed them only in the mirror. Then one of them brushed his wet hair back. The other three repeated exactly the same movement.

Hair back. A small shake of the head. Touching the back of the neck with the left hand.

My heart clenched. It was my nervous habit. My father used to mock me in childhood: “You can always recognize a tense Mercer this way.”

One of the boys looked at me from the mirror.

“Why are you copying us?”

“I’m not copying you.”

“Then why did you do the same thing?”

All four kept their eyes on me. They all had the same gray-blue eyes, narrow chins, and a small dimple on the left cheek. Like the one I had when I smiled in childhood photographs.

“I have been doing this since childhood,” I barely said.

The boys looked at one another.

“Us too.”

The boldest one held out his hand.

“I’m Luka. These are Niko, Levan, and Davit. We are quadruplets.”

“Where is your mother?”

“She works here,” Luka told me. “But the manager says staying here overnight is not allowed.”

I followed them into the hall. At the kitchen entrance, an irritated manager stood in front of a woman wearing a server’s apron.

“You can’t leave the children in the storage room overnight, Elena,” he said sternly.

“They only need a warm place until morning.”

“That is not my responsibility.”

The woman turned around.

Green eyes met mine. The small scar above her eyebrow was still there.

“Elena?”

The color drained from her face.

“Boys, we’re leaving.”

Outside, the February wind rushed between the buildings like a knife. Two worn bags stood on the sidewalk. I took the card to the empty apartment in SoHo from my pocket and held it out to Elena.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi nueva empleada entró en mi ala privada y habló al hombre que todos temían; entonces alguien en la casa dejó de respirar

“I won’t ask questions today. Take the children somewhere warm.”

“I don’t want your charity.”

“This is not charity.”

“You disappeared for seven years and now decided that you are their father?”

“I did not disappear.”

Elena’s face changed.

“Then someone deceived both of us.”

Before getting into the car, Luka said quietly:

“Mom, I’m very tired.”

Elena took the card.

As soon as I returned to the room, I called my assistant.

“Cancel tonight.”

“You mean the announcement of the engagement?”

“Everything.”

“Your mother has already invited the guests.”

“I don’t care anymore.”

I ended the call. I did not yet know whether they were truly my sons. But I knew I would not put that ring on another woman’s finger until I understood why Elena believed I had abandoned her and why my family had convinced me for seven years that she was the one who had left me.

The phone rang immediately. My mother’s name lit up on the screen. The call came a second time. And on the third, I heard such severity in her voice that my hand involuntarily touched the compass silver cufflink. My mother told me only one thing:

“Alex, before you go to that woman, there is one thing I have to show you…”

My mother’s voice on the phone was strangely calm. That was exactly what frightened me.

“What do you have to show me?”

“Come home. Alone.”

“Elena is already in my apartment with the children.”

There was silence for several seconds.

“Then don’t leave them there.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t know who they are.”

“Four boys with my face are standing in front of me, Mom.”

“Appearance proves nothing.”

“Neither do your words.”

My mother ended the call.

In the SoHo apartment, at six at night, Elena stood by the window. The boys had found my old wooden puzzle and spread it across the floor. The room smelled of orange soap and wet wool. All four were silent.

“Tell me everything,” I said to Elena.

“First tell me why you left me in front of the hospital.”

“I wasn’t there.”

Elena took a folded paper from her bag.

“This is your handwriting.”

My name was written on the paper. Below it was one sentence: “Elena, I cannot accept the children. Never contact me again.”

!!!  A mostohaanyám eladott egy idegennek, majd amikor menekülni próbáltam, a férfi azonnal elsápadt

Cold poured into my stomach.

“I did not write this.”

“That is exactly what you told me then, when I was waiting for an answer. Then your family told me that you had planned a wedding with another woman.”

“I tried to come to you every week.”

Elena lowered her eyes for the first time.

“Then why didn’t you come?”

The doorbell rang. I looked at the camera. My father’s lawyer stood on the threshold, holding a black folder.

“He said this was only for you,” he told me. “And if you do not open it now, you will lose all four children forever…”

The lawyer entered the room and carefully closed the door. He placed his black folder on the table, but his hand still rested on it. The four boys stopped with the puzzle pieces in their hands. Elena leaned against the wall, as if there were no strength left in her legs.

“Who sent you?” I asked.

“Your father. On the night Elena went to the hospital, your father was still alive and controlling everything.”

“My father died six years ago.”

“I know. But two days before his death, he entrusted this folder to me.”

The folder’s lock opened. Inside were a hospital record, four birth certificates, and a sealed laboratory conclusion. Elena held her breath.

“Open it, Alex,” the lawyer said.

I took the sealed sheet in my hands. The compass cufflink scratched my fingers. I tore open the sealed paper and read the first line.

“All four children… are my biological children.”

Such silence fell in the room that I could even hear a wooden puzzle piece fall onto the floor.

Luka looked at his mother.

“Mom, does this mean you found our father?”

Elena’s lips trembled.

“I never lost him. They made him lose us.”

“Who?” I asked.

The lawyer handed me a second sheet.

“Bank statements from your family foundation. Seven years ago Vanessa’s father asked your father for a deal. If you divorced Elena, their companies would merge. You refused. So they convinced both of you that the other was betraying you.”

“The letter?” I asked.

“It was written in your name, but the handwriting examination declared it a forgery. Your mother’s personal secretary wrote the letter.”

Elena sat down on a chair. Tears ran from her eyes, although her voice was clear.

!!!  A milliárdos csak tréfának szánta, amikor a szobalány tízéves kislányát sakkozni hívta, de a végén az egész város megtudta, mit rejtegetett a tökéletes öltöny mögött

“Were you really looking for me?”

“For seven years,” I answered. “But every time they convinced me that you had chosen to leave.”

She took my hand. Her fingers were cold as ice.

“Then this time, don’t let me go.”

The four boys slowly approached me. Davit looked at my silver cufflink.

“Is that a compass?”

“Yes.”

“Then will you find the way now, at least?”

His question struck my chest harder than any accusation.

At that very moment the lawyer’s phone rang. He answered, heard several words, and his face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Your mother knows that you opened the folder.”

“And then?”

The lawyer looked out the window. Across the street stood a black car.

“She called the police and reported that you tried to kidnap four children. But that is not the worst thing.”

“What else?”

He put the phone on the table. A new message was visible on the screen: “If you told Alex the truth, the hospital record must disappear.”

Elena looked at the message and suddenly turned pale.

“The record still exists. And it says where they took us that night…”

At that moment the bang of a car door came from below. Someone was quickly coming up the stairs…
