Part 4 — My family gathered in court to bury my name, but when the back door opened, my brother’s smile vanished

At that very moment I realized that I no longer had any hope of leaving the courthouse peacefully.

The prosecutor turned off the screen.

“Who is this person?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet,” he replied. “But the account was opened in your name six years ago, and money was deposited every month.”

Luka suddenly jumped to his feet.

“This is not my affair!”

His attorney grabbed him by the arm.

“Sit down. Don’t say another word now.”

“Hayes, you are responsible for my defense!”

“I am already trying not to make your situation even worse.”

For the first time Luka understood that the person he was paying was no longer going to save him.

Mother was crying, but I did not look toward her anymore. For years, her tears had always meant to me that once again I had to yield, once again I had to explain, once again I had to save the family from her son.

This time I did not move.

Father barely managed to reach me.

“Elena, we can explain to you.”

“Now?”

“We did not know what he was using your name for.”

“But you knew that you hated my name.”

He fell silent.

Luka was still shouting.

“This recording is forged! All of you are against me!”

The prosecutor signaled to the technician. The audio recording played again, this time from the speakers of the entire courtroom.

“If we use Elena’s military history, winning the contract will be guaranteed.”

Luka’s own voice echoed back to him from the walls.

“No one will believe her anyway.”

He raised his head.

“Turn this off!”

But the voice continued.

“Our parents are on my side.”

Luka froze.

At that moment he saw himself for the first time through someone else’s eyes: a man who calmly spoke about destroying a woman because he was certain she would never return. He looked around the courtroom and realized that now everyone was seeing precisely the person he really was.

The judge informed the defense that the prosecution’s materials would immediately be handed over to the investigators. Luka’s passport was confiscated, his accounts were frozen, and his parents were also forbidden to dispose of the company’s property.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Schwiegereltern warfen mich mit dem Neugeborenen hinaus, doch als ich den Umschlag übergab, wich die Farbe aus Daniels Gesicht

Cameras were waiting for us outside.

“Ms. Sterling, is your brother guilty?”

I did not want to stop.

“The court will determine that.”

“Did you want revenge?”

“I only took back my name.”

That evening I returned to the small hotel room. My uniform cap lay on the table. Inside it, near the inner seam, I had attached a small copper clasp. Engraved on it were the words given to me by Father: “Return home.”

For ten years I had carried this clasp with me, although I no longer intended to return home.

The phone rang.

The investigator was calling.

“The second account was opened in your grandfather’s name,” he told me. “But the funds were transferred to a trust that does not belong to Luka.”

“Then who does it belong to?”

“We are finding that out now. But we know one thing: a few days before his death, your grandfather left a video message on this account.”

“I want to see the video.”

The voice was silent for several seconds.

“You cannot see it yet. The file has a password, and the password is indicated only in one letter. The letter was sent to your childhood home.”

The next morning the investigator called me.

“We found the letter,” he told me. “Luka never opened it. But it contains only one sentence: ‘Elena must understand why I chose silence.’”

That same day I went to the house.

Bernard met me at the door. His face was tired, and in his hands he held the wooden box from my childhood.

“These are your grandfather’s things,” he said.

“Why didn’t you give them to me until now?”

“Luka told me you no longer wanted to see us.”

“And you believed him.”

“Yes.”

It was the first time I heard that “yes” from him without him trying to justify himself.

In the box were old photographs, military letters, and one small note. The password for Grandfather’s video was written there as well, in the old form of my name.

!!!  Eu contei ao homem mais temido da cidade por que nunca permiti um toque, e a reação dele me fez recuar

His face appeared on the screen. He was sitting in bed and looked very tired.

“Elena, if you are watching this, you already know that I did not trust Luka. I told your father to leave the family land to you, because you were the only one who would not use it to humiliate someone else. But when I became ill, Luka hid the documents from me. I asked Bernard to tell you. He did not dare.”

In the video Grandfather exhaled for a long time.

“Silence is also a choice, my child. Sometimes a person does not tell a lie, but still opens the way for a lie.”

The video ended.

Bernard lowered his head.

“I thought I was protecting the family.”

“You were protecting not the family, but Luka.”

“I know.”

“What will you do now?”

“Whatever the court requires. And whatever you require.”

“I no longer require anything from you.”

Selina entered the room. In her hand she held an old photograph in which Luka and I were children. She placed the photograph on the table.

“You can take it,” she told me.

I looked at the photograph. I was smiling absurdly broadly, and Luka’s hand was on my shoulder. Back then I still believed that this hand would protect me.

“I don’t want this anymore,” I said.

Selina pressed her lips together.

“Why?”

“Because a memory should not be an obligation.”

Several weeks later the court found Luka guilty of government fraud, using forged documents, and misappropriating funds. He was sentenced to a long prison term, and the company lost all its contracts.

Father refused the deal and also admitted that he had signed the guarantees because of his brother’s promises. Before the court, Mother said for the first time that for years she had not wanted to see the truth.

I did not celebrate their punishment.

I simply no longer paid the price of their silence.

Three months later I moved to a small coastal town. There I began working in a state recovery program. In the mornings I opened the office window myself. I drank bitter coffee. In the evenings I helped the neighbor’s little girl with her mathematics homework.

!!!  Part 4 — The New Maid Broke the Rules Upon Entering My Castle, but One Movement of Hers That Night Silenced Everyone

One day she drew a house on a sheet of paper. The house had a red roof, and beside it stood a woman in a white uniform.

“That’s you,” she told me. “You are coming home.”

I laughed.

“Maybe.”

“Do good people always come back?”

The first snow began outside the window.

“No,” I told her. “Sometimes they build a new home.”

That evening I received a letter from Luka. It was short.

“Elena, I know I destroyed everything. Come just once. I want to explain.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time. Then I folded it and put it in the drawer, without an answer.

The next day another message arrived.

“Family is still family.”

This time I replied.

“Family is where the truth does not need your destruction.”

Then I deleted his number.

In the evening I placed the uniform cap on the shelf. The small copper clasp was still shining near the inner seam. For years I had believed that the words engraved on it were an order.

“Return home.”

Now I understood that home had no address.

Home was the place where no one anymore asked me to prove my own existence.

I enclosed the copper clasp in my palm and stood by the window. Snow was silently covering the street.

This time I did not turn back.

Missed the beginning?
