The Husband Who Abandoned Her During Pregnancy Walked Into the Maternity Ward Smiling, but His Hand Suddenly Stopped When He Saw the Doctor’s Face

A few minutes after my son was born, the doctor picked up the baby and looked at him with such an expression, as if not an impossible miracle but an old crime had returned to the room.

I was lying on the bed, my whole body trembling, and I could still feel the empty place on my chest where my child was supposed to be laid. Doctor Levan Kiknadze was examining the baby boy’s tiny fingers. The watch hanging on his wrist touched his white coat with a metallic clink at every movement.

“Doctor, is my child all right?” I barely said.

He did not answer me immediately.

He ran his hand over my boy’s face, then lowered his eyes and quietly asked me:

“Who is the child’s father?”

A chill poured through my heart.

“Adrian Brooks,” I told him. “Why are you asking me?”

Levan closed his eyes. For several seconds he stood as if fighting something. Then he handed the baby to the nurse and looked toward the door.

“Mrs. Nino, Adrian should not have been able to come here. Especially today.”

The door handle immediately went down.

Adrian entered in a dark blue suit, with an expensive watch and the same smile with which three months earlier he had placed the divorce papers before me in our dining room. Behind him stood his mother, Evelyn Brooks. She held a small leather bag in her hand and had a victorious expression on her lips.

“Congratulations, Nino,” Adrian said. “At last, the day has come when you have only one choice left in your life.”

My stomach clenched.

“Get out.”

“First I have to see the baby.”

“You did not call for three months. You did not come to the doctor either. Why do you remember now that you are a father?”

Evelyn smiled coldly.

“Do not complicate things. Adrian has come only to settle the issue of custody.”

Beside the bed lay a small blue blanket. I had sewn it from an old quilt several weeks earlier, and embroidered a yellow sun in the corner. My fingers unintentionally touched it. In this little thing I had hidden all my tired, frightened hope.

“My child is not going anywhere,” I said.

Adrian chuckled.

“Your child? Interesting wording. It will be proven in court whose child he is at all.”

He said it as if he had already managed to humiliate me in every possible way.

Three months earlier, on the same evening when I found the divorce papers, I wanted to tell him about the pregnancy. I held warm tea in my hand, but I was gripping the cup so tightly with my fingers that the edge of the ceramic cut my skin.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Drei Stunden vor meiner Hochzeit hörte ich hinter einer Tür meinen Namen – dann blieb mein Bräutigam plötzlich reglos stehen

“Adrian, I am pregnant.”

He only stopped adjusting his cuff.

“That changes nothing.”

Evelyn walked past the window.

“A successful man should not destroy his future because of one unplanned pregnancy.”

Within a week the bank accounts were emptied. The insurance was canceled. The credit cards stopped working. Then a rumor spread that I had cheated on Adrian and that another man was the child’s father.

At night I cleaned office buildings, and during breaks I corrected documents on my phone. On weekends I folded hotel linens. My feet hurt, but every coin went toward rent, the doctor, and the child’s future.

Adrian had forgotten one thing: before our marriage, I investigated financial fraud.

I already had the hidden files saved. The deleted emails had been recovered. I found shell companies, false accounts, and transfers connecting Adrian and Evelyn to each other.

To this day I repeated one email by heart: “Cut off all resources. When she reaches desperation, she will give up custody of the child herself.”

They thought they were breaking me.

In reality, they were collecting a case against themselves.

And now Adrian stood beside my bed, the doctor was looking anxiously at the baby, and Evelyn was already calling someone on the phone.

Levan suddenly raised his hand.

“Do not call anyone. First we have to find out everything about this child.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“Doctor, this is my family matter.”

“No, Mr. Brooks. From this moment on, this is a medical and legal matter.”

Silence fell in the room. Levan went to the table, where my folder and the baby’s initial examination sheet lay. He reached toward the folder, his fingers touched the cover, and he quietly said:

“You do not yet know what your son’s blood proves…”

Levan’s hand stopped on the folder.

Adrian’s smile slowly disappeared from his face.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“The baby’s blood result is not yet completely finished,” the doctor said. “But one indicator has already come out. It is so rare that I am seeing it for the first time in my practice.”

Evelyn put the phone in her pocket.

“That means nothing.”

“You do not decide that,” Levan replied.

Adrian leaned toward me.

“Nino, what are you hiding from me?”

I wanted to laugh, but pain stopped my breathing.

“Me? You hid life from me for three months.”

The door opened and a laboratory technician entered. He held a small sealed packet in his hand. The wet mark of his shoes remained on the floor.

Levan looked at the packet, then at Adrian.

“Before we open this, you should know one thing. The old medical certificate presented by your family may be forged.”

Evelyn could not hide her paling.

“Be careful, Doctor.”

“I was careful throughout the entire pregnancy,” I answered. “That is why I still have every letter, every transfer, and every threat.”

Adrian reached a hand toward me, but Levan stepped in front of him.

“Do not touch her.”

At that moment someone knocked loudly on the door. A woman’s voice came from outside:

“Mrs. Makharadze, I am a lawyer. I have an order and another document for you…”

The door opened and Mariam Kavatadze entered the room. In one hand she held a legal folder, and in the other a small sealed envelope. Her heels sounded clearly on the floor, as if every step shattered Adrian’s confidence.

“Nino, you requested temporary protection,” she told me. “But now the case is much bigger.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You cannot stage a scene against me in this room.”

Mariam did not even look at him.

“You have already staged this scene. We are only turning on the recording.”

She put the phone on the table. First Evelyn’s voice sounded in the room, then Adrian’s.

“Freeze all the accounts. Make her lose her job. If the child becomes afraid of being left alone, she will hand herself over to us.”

The rush of blood in my ears grew louder. I knew these words, but hearing them now, beside my newborn, was more painful than remembering that night.

Evelyn grabbed the chair.

“This was obtained illegally.”

“The letters were sent from your personal account,” Mariam replied. “And the recording is from a camera legally submitted to the court.”

Levan opened the sealed packet. Inside lay the blood result and another, older medical document. He first looked at the paper, then at Adrian.

“Now I understand why I cried,” he said.

Adrian lost his color.

“Just tell me whether the child is healthy or not.”

“He is healthy. And he is yours.”

It was as if the air stopped in the room.

“Impossible,” Evelyn whispered.

Levan held the document up.

“This is your son’s rare hereditary marker. Adrian Brooks had the same marker in childhood, when he was treated at this hospital. But later, his file was entered as saying that he had permanently lost the ability to father children.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That certificate was from my doctor.”

“The certificate is forged,” Levan said. “I was at that operation. You never underwent that procedure.”

I looked at the baby. His tiny hand was clenched into a fist. For the first time after all these months, something heavy fell away from my heart.

Mariam opened the second paper.

“The genetic comparison has already been conducted. The result confirms paternity by ninety-nine point nine percent.”

Adrian leaned against the wall.

“But I said the child was not mine…”

“And by that you committed defamation,” I told him. “And at your own mother’s instruction.”

Evelyn looked toward me.

“Nino, we can negotiate.”

“No,” Mariam interrupted calmly. “Now the state has to speak with you.”

Police officers appeared at the door. For the first time Adrian stopped resisting.

But before they took him from the room, my phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. I ignored the call, but a voice message arrived immediately.

Mariam looked at me and her expression changed.

“Nino, you have to listen to this voice. The person who called says there is another victim in Adrian’s file…”
