Part 4 — They Found My Daughter and Her Newborn Locked in a Car, but When My Son-in-Law Denied Everything, the Neighbor’s Face Suddenly Changed

The cameras in the corridor were not working.

That was the first thing the detective told me when we ran together to the hospital.

It was nearing nine o’clock at night. Raindrops struck the windows, while the wet footprints of an unfamiliar man could be seen on the floor.

Two police officers were already standing beside Emily’s room.

“Did a man come in?” I asked.

“We did not understand how he got through,” one of them answered.

I opened the door.

Emily was sitting pale on the bed. Grace was sleeping peacefully beside her in a transparent cradle. Her tiny fingers were gripping the edge of the blanket.

“Mom, don’t be afraid,” Emily told me.

“Was someone here?”

She nodded.

“He was wearing a doctor’s uniform. But he wasn’t a real doctor. He lifted Grace’s blanket and told me that he was taking the baby to another department.”

“Why didn’t you go with him?”

Emily looked at the small metal bell lying beside the bed.

“Because I saw Brandon’s key fob in his pocket.”

The police officer immediately transmitted the information over the radio. The detective called Brandon.

“Where are you?”

There was a long silence in response.

Then Brandon said:

“At home. I haven’t gone anywhere.”

The detective turned on the speakerphone.

“Then why is your car’s device transmitting from the hospital parking lot?”

Brandon could not find a word.

Nicole whispered beside him:

“We have to run away.”

“It’s already too late,” he answered.

Their voices could be heard clearly on the phone. Both of them thought that the detective was speaking only to Brandon and that he had not heard Nicole’s words. But he did not end the call.

That same night, the police found a fake doctor’s uniform in the hospital parking lot, a blank transfer form issued in the baby’s name, and passports placed in the trunk of Nicole’s car.

!!!  Mi hija encontró a un desconocido desangrándose detrás del restaurante, pero cuando encendí la luz, su mirada me dejó paralizada

Brandon and Nicole were arrested.

During the arrest, Brandon still tried to convince us.

“Margaret, this is a misunderstanding. Emily is sick. I only wanted to protect her.”

I looked at him.

“Did you begin protecting my daughter by locking her in a car?”

He could not say a word.

The case did not end simply. The investigation established that Brandon had transferred money from Emily’s bank accounts for several months. Nicole worked at his partner company and prepared forged documents. They wanted to place a debt on the house and then sell it. They demanded custody of Grace because they did not want the account opened in the child’s name to remain inaccessible to them.

But the most difficult moment came several weeks later.

The police prepared the recording from my husband’s office for Brandon. Before the trial, in a small room, he heard his own voice for the first time.

“Everything must be finished before they return in the evening.”

Brandon’s face slowly turned pale.

“What if the baby doesn’t survive?”

It was Nicole’s voice.

“Then we won’t have a problem anymore.”

It was his own answer.

Brandon struck the table with his hand.

“I didn’t say it like that.”

The lawyer did not look at him.

“You did. And everyone heard it.”

Brandon lowered his head. For the first time, he understood that the words with which he had frightened others now stood against him.

The next day, the court denied bail to him and Nicole. Several months later, they were charged with endangering life, forgery, fraud, and attempted kidnapping of a child. Brandon was sentenced to years in prison. Nicole confessed and gave the investigation all the accounts, but she still could not escape punishment.

I did not celebrate their suffering.

I simply was no longer trying to survive the consequences of their actions for the first time.

!!!  Meu marido exigiu todos os bens e rejeitou o próprio filho, mas depois da minha assinatura o advogado perdeu a cor

After leaving the hospital, Emily moved in with me. We removed all of Brandon’s belongings from her room. Behind the wardrobe, only one photograph remained: Emily was a little girl, standing in her father’s office and holding my husband’s brass key in her hand.

The empty room became strangely peaceful.

Three months later, Emily began working part-time at a children’s clinic. In the mornings, I walked Grace in our new neighborhood, where trees shaded the streets and the neighbors knew one another by name.

Grace was already laughing.

One morning, during the first snow, she stretched her hands toward the sky. Her hat fell over her eyes, and I pushed it back with a laugh.

“Grandma, look!” Emily shouted.

The snow was slowly falling, white lines were appearing on the roofs, and my husband’s old brass key now hung on the door of Grace’s room, without a small blue ribbon, plain and heavy.

That very evening, I received a letter from Brandon.

“Margaret, I know that I made a mistake. Tell Emily that I still love her. Please bring Grace to me at least once.”

I placed the letter on the kitchen table.

Emily looked at it for a long time.

“What should we answer?”

I walked to the window. Outside, Grace was leaving small tracks in the snow.

“Nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Silence is also an answer when someone has refused to listen to the truth for too long.”

Emily folded the letter and put it in the trash bin. Then she called Grace.

The child ran into the room holding a drawing made with pencils. Three figures stood under the sun in the drawing: me, Emily, and Grace. There was no car anywhere.

That night, while I was putting Grace to sleep, I looked at the key hanging on the door. Once, it had been the key to my husband’s office. Then it opened the door to the truth. Now it was only the key to the door of a peaceful home.

!!!  ნაწილი 4 — აეროპორტში ქმარმა მდივანი ჩემს თვალწინ ჩაიხუტა, მაგრამ ჩემი წასვლის შემდეგ ადვოკატის ზარმა მას ღიმილი წაართვა

Grace smiled in her sleep.

I touched the key and turned off the light.

This time, the door was locked from the inside.

Missed the beginning?
