On the day my seventy-two-year-old husband was buried, his son put a lock on our house and told my little daughter that we would be left on the street that same evening.
It all began five years ago, when my first husband, Tommy, was taken from me by cancer. I held his hand until the very end in the hospital’s white corridor, but his fingers gradually slipped away from mine. That night six-year-old Emily slept in my lap, and for the first time I thought that love sometimes does not raise a person up, but throws them to the ground.
We took out loans for Tommy’s treatment. We lost the house. The payments piled up as receipts hidden behind the cabinet door. During the day I worked in a shop, and in the evening I worked as the personal assistant of a wealthy businessman, Arthur Hale. Arthur was seventy-two years old, but his eyes were so sharp, as if he weighed inwardly every person who entered the room.
One evening, in his office, the clock struck six. On the desk lay a leather folder, and beside it was his old brass key holder, shaped like a small ship.
“Anna, you need a permanent home for Emily,” he told me.
“That is my personal matter.”
“I know. That is why I am offering you marriage.”
The words fell into the room as if a glass cup had broken.
“You are my boss.”
“And a person who can pay off your debts.”
“What do you ask for in return?”
Arthur looked at me for a long time.
“Your being beside me. Not a game of love. Honesty.”
When I returned home that night, I looked at Emily. She was holding my old silver bracelet, inside which I had engraved Tommy’s initials. The girl was sleeping, and a dried trace of tears could be seen on her eyelashes.
The next morning I told Arthur that I agreed.
The wedding was small. Only the notary and Arthur’s lawyer, Mr. Levine, stood as witnesses. Arthur put a simple gold ring on my finger and quietly told me:
“Someday you will think that you regret this decision.”
“You are not planning to deceive me, are you?”
He smiled, but there was no warmth in the smile.
“I only ask you to endure until the end.”
We lived together for five years. Arthur read fairy tales to Emily, while I arranged his medicines. I never asked for more than we had agreed upon. He also never touched me in such a way that I felt uncomfortable.
But his son, Daniel, hated me from the very first day. He said that I had married for money.
After Arthur’s funeral, at seven o’clock in the evening, Daniel threw my suitcases down the stairs.
“The house must be empty by tomorrow morning,” he told me.
“This is Arthur’s house.”
“It is no longer.”
Emily silently clutched my hand. Her fingers were cold.
At that moment a black car stopped in the yard. Mr. Levine got out, holding a brown folder in his hand.
“Mrs. Anna,” he said, “Arthur told me that I absolutely had to come to this conversation.”
Daniel snorted.
“Another fairy tale about a will?”
The lawyer opened the lock and reached toward the first sheet. My breath caught, because I remembered Arthur’s last words: “Endure until the end.” Levine lifted the top sheet of the folder and said……
“He knew you would take the bait,” Levine said.
Emily hid behind me.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Daniel laughed.
“You see? Father himself knew that you married for money.”
Levine looked toward him.
“Listen to me to the end first.”
He placed a small voice recorder on the table. Arthur’s voice sounded in the room, calm and tired:
“Daniel will try to drive Anna out. Let him think that he has won. Only then will it become clear what he is really fighting for.”
The recorder stopped.
Daniel’s face changed.
“This is illegal.”
“This is his notarized and sealed recording,” Levine replied.
I remembered Arthur’s ship-shaped key holder. Three days before his death, he had placed it in my hand and told me never to open the small back part.
“What did he hide there?” I asked.
Levine took the same key holder out of his pocket.
“Your husband wanted me to give this to you only today.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Open it, if you dare.”
Levine checked the miniature lock with his fingers. I put my hand on Emily’s shoulder and realized that the truth was already standing at the door, but I still did not know whom it would protect……
Levine pressed a fingernail against the back of the ship-shaped key holder. A small lid opened, and inside appeared a folded microfilm. At that moment only the ticking of the wall clock could be heard in the room.
“What is this?” Daniel asked.
“The code confirming Arthur’s final will,” Levine said. “And now the main part.”
He took two documents from the folder. My signature was on the first, and Arthur’s was on the second.
“The marriage contract was only the outward part, Mrs. Anna. Arthur did not transfer all the property to you, but created an inviolable fund in Emily’s name. The house, medical insurance, and monthly income belong to her. You are her guardian.”
I could not move.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Levine lowered his eyes.
“Because Daniel was buried in debts. Arthur knew that he was using forged signatures and would attack the fund if he learned everything in advance.”
“That is a lie!” Daniel shouted. “My father brought this woman in for money!”
Levine placed the second sheet in front of him.
“Here are your bank statements. During the last three years, sixteen transfers were made from the company account to your personal account. All with your own passwords.”
Daniel’s hand stopped on the sheet. His face turned white as ash.
I remembered Arthur’s voice, and something broke inside my heart. He had not fully trusted me. But he had still protected me.
“What did ‘He knew you would take the bait’ mean?” I asked.
Levine looked straight at me.
“Arthur knew that a desperate woman will cling to security. He calculated this in advance in order to lure Daniel into acting against you. But he also knew that during the five years you would not remain beside him only because of the agreement.”
Daniel opened the door.
“I will not allow this.”
“It is already too late,” the lawyer replied.
At that very moment Levine’s phone rang. He listened to several words and turned his gaze toward me.
“Mrs. Anna, the police said that they found another document in Daniel’s room. But this no longer concerns Arthur’s property. It bears the name of your deceased husband, Tommy……”
