Part 4 — After marrying a wealthy elderly boss, his heir locked me out, and at the lawyer’s words his face froze

Levine put the phone on the table, but his hand was still pressed to his ear.

“What document is it?” I asked.

“I do not know. The policeman only says that Daniel tried to hide it.”

Daniel let go of the door handle.

“It is a random piece of paper.”

“Then why were you keeping it in your safe?” Levine asked.

Daniel fell silent.

Emily stood beside me and nervously pressed her shoe against the floor. The tip of her little foot tapped on the wooden floor with every touch.

That night the police came.

Daniel first spoke loudly, then called a lawyer, and finally seemed to decide to disappear from the room. But the back door of the house was already locked.

“You cannot detain me in my father’s house,” he said.

“No one is detaining you here,” the policeman replied. “We are simply asking you to sign the search report.”

“I will wait for my lawyer.”

His lawyer called forty minutes later. Levine handed the phone to Daniel. Daniel stood against the wall and listened silently.

“But you told me that the fund did not exist…” he said.

The man on the other side answered something.

Daniel’s face became tense.

“Are you backing out now?”

He listened for a long time still, then slowly lowered the phone.

“My lawyer is no longer representing me,” he whispered.

The policeman brought a small metal box from his room. The corner of the box was scratched, and the lock had been forced open.

Inside lay Tommy’s medical documents.

I saw his name on the very first sheet and my breath froze.

“Why did he have this?” I asked.

Daniel lowered his head.

Levine unfolded the documents with a gloved hand.

“It says here that one of the payments for your husband’s treatment was covered by an unknown fund. Then they demanded the money back and converted the loan into your name.”

!!!  Mi hijo puso mi maleta junto a la puerta y exigió mi firma, pero al sonar el timbre su rostro perdió todo el color

“Who did this?”

The policeman took one more item from the box: an old bank receipt and Daniel’s signature.

Daniel sat down on a chair.

“I was only an intermediary.”

“For whom?” I asked.

For the first time he looked at me.

“For Arthur.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the room.

“What are you saying?”

“Father told me that if you ever left his house, you would receive everything. So I increased your debts. I wanted you to have nowhere to go after Arthur’s death and to give up the house cheaply.”

I clung to the chair.

I could no longer change Tommy’s death, but now I knew that the rest of our lives had been part of someone’s calculated game.

“Did Arthur know?” I asked.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“He found out in the last year. Then he began making recordings.”

Levine turned on the recorder on the table.

Daniel’s own voice sounded:

“This woman will sign everything. First she has a child to protect, then herself. Such people need only the door to be closed for them to fall to their knees.”

Daniel froze.

For the first time he was hearing his own words from outside.

“I did not say it like that…”

“It is your own voice,” the policeman replied.

Daniel closed his eyes. I felt no joy toward him. Only emptiness.

The investigation began the next day. The bank confirmed the forged transfers. Daniel was charged with fraud and financial crime. In court he denied everything, but the documents, recordings, and his signatures fit together exactly.

Journalists were waiting for me in front of the courthouse.

“Are you happy that you received everything?” one of them asked.

I clasped Emily’s hand.

“I have not ‘received’ anything. I only took back what belonged to my daughter from the very beginning.”

For a long time Arthur’s house seemed empty to me.

An old leather armchair stood in his office. A pen had remained on the desk, as if he would return at any moment and ask me again how Emily’s day had gone.

But most of all, the ship-shaped key holder hurt me. I turned it in my fingers and thought about how one small object could carry the fates of so many people.

Several weeks later the court sentenced Daniel to imprisonment, while the fund was finally approved in Emily’s name. Our debts were also canceled, because it was confirmed that they had been created fraudulently.

When I left the courthouse, I did not dance. I simply stood on the steps for a long time and felt for the first time that I owed no one anything anymore—not money, not fear, not gratitude.

Three months later we began a new life in the house.

Emily went to school in the morning, while I opened a small sewing workshop in the city center. I hung dark green curtains by the window. I left Tommy’s photograph on the wall, but beside it I attached Emily’s drawing: a small house, two windows, and three people in front.

“Who is the third?” I asked.

“The one who watches over the house for us,” Emily replied.

“Father?”

She shook her head.

“Everyone we loved and who now looks down on us.”

The first snow came at the end of November. In the workshop the sound of the machine could be heard, scissors cut the fabric, and Emily drew little stars on the window with her finger.

That evening I received Daniel’s letter.

“Anna, everything was not as you thought. My father deceived you too. I can explain to you. Just meet me once.”

I looked at the letter for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“I no longer need an explanation. My life is already here.”

I did not send the letter. I simply tore it up and threw it into the trash bin.

!!!  No dia em que me aposentei, meu marido entregou-me uma lista de obrigações — então minha sogra chegou e ele ficou imóvel

Later, when I was locking the house, the ship-shaped key holder remained in my hand. Its metal was cold, but this time the cold no longer hurt me.

I attached the small key holder to the door key.

I entered the house, left Emily’s light on, and calmly closed the door.

This time I was the one locking the door.

And for the first time I knew that I was truly staying inside.

Missed the beginning?
