My Husband Hid Me at the Company Party Because I Was Wearing a Cheap Dress, but the Billionaire Turned Pale When He Saw My Necklace

“Do not introduce yourself to anyone as my wife tonight.”

Julian said these words to me beneath Crystal’s enormous chandeliers, while guests moved around the hall with champagne glasses in their hands.

“If anyone asks you anything, tell them that you work at the event,” he added. “And stay by the kitchen. Or by the restroom. No one will pay attention to you there.”

For several seconds I could not understand a word. I heard only the sound of my heels falling on the brown wooden floor and touched the silver crescent hanging from my neck.

The dark blue dress really was cheap. I had sewn it myself from old fabric whose edges were already slightly fraying. But it was my best dress. And the necklace was the only thing left to me by the woman who had raised me through childhood.

Mrs. Rosa lay in bed a few days before her death and touched this crescent with her fingers.

“This was in your hand when I found you,” she told me in a whisper. “Thirty years ago, near Fort Worth, beside a burned car. You had a fever, a burn scar near your shoulder, and this necklace clenched in your little fist.”

I knew nothing else about my past.

That evening Julian led my arm toward the kitchen door. His fingers dug into my skin so hard that the marks of his nails remained.

“Do not make this harder for me, Elena,” he hissed through his teeth.

“I am your wife.”

“At home you are my wife. Here you are part of my career. And a career needs a suitable appearance.”

His words hurt more than his hand. I lowered my head and stopped by the dessert table. The smell of vanilla choked me, while the little cakes on the silver tray shone untouched.

At the other end of the hall, Julian was already laughing with influential guests and shaking hands. From time to time he looked toward me, as if checking whether I was still standing in the corner.

At ten o’clock in the evening, the music suddenly stopped.

Everyone turned their heads toward the entrance.

Richard Kensington entered, the owner of the company and the man whose one signature meant Julian’s promotion or destruction. His sister Eleanor was walking beside him. Both were dressed in expensive clothes, but tiredness could be seen on Eleanor’s face.

Julian ran toward them.

“Mr. Kensington, this is the greatest honor!”

Richard looked at him only once.

“I was told that you brought a wife.”

Julian’s smile disappeared.

“Yes… she is here. She simply is not accustomed to such surroundings.”

Then he extended his hand toward me.

“Elena, come. This is Mr. Kensington. Elena helps with the event.”

I politely held out my hand to Richard.

He did not shake my hand.

His eyes froze on my necklace.

Eleanor brought both hands to her mouth. Julian gave a nervous laugh.

“Do not pay attention to this old thing,” he said. “I always tell her not to wear cheap jewelry at events like these.”

Then he grabbed my arm again.

“Return to your corner, Elena. You are embarrassing me.”

At that moment Richard’s voice cut through the entire hall.

“Let her go.”

Julian froze.

Richard took one step forward.

“Now.”

Julian slowly took his hand away from me, but his gaze was still full of menace. Richard, meanwhile, was coming toward me without taking his eyes off the crescent. His fingers moved toward his inner pocket, as if he were afraid to touch something there…

Richard did not take his eyes off Julian.

“Never put your hand on her again,” he said calmly.

Julian swallowed.

“Mr. Kensington, this is a family matter.”

“Then why were you keeping her hidden by the kitchen?”

I could not answer anything. Richard stopped in front of me, and his voice trembled.

“This necklace… where did you get it?”

“Mrs. Rosa gave it to me. She found me beside a burned car, thirty years ago. I had a scar near my shoulder, and I was holding this crescent in my hand.”

Eleanor quietly sobbed.

Richard put his hands into his pockets. For a moment he closed his eyes, as if forcing himself not to believe it.

Then he took a small wooden box from his inner pocket. A half-sun was carved into the lid with charcoal. He opened the box, and inside lay the second piece of exactly the same shape.

The hall fell silent.

Julian looked at me.

“This is impossible.”

“What is impossible?” I asked.

Richard brought the second half close to my necklace. Both pieces fit together perfectly.

“You are my lost daughter,” he said.

My knees lost their strength.

But before anyone could say anything, Eleanor’s phone rang. She looked at the screen, and her face changed.

“Richard… it is the lawyer. He says he found a document from the old case. And this document is connected with Julian’s name…”

Eleanor’s phone was still ringing, but Richard raised his hand.

“Put it on speaker.”

Eleanor answered the call.

“Mr. Kensington, I rechecked the record received from the archives,” said a man’s voice. “In the case of the accident from thirty years ago, a child is considered missing. The girl had a crescent-shaped necklace around her neck.”

Someone in the hall set down a glass. The sound of glass rang out unusually loudly.

“The child’s name?” Richard asked.

“The official document says: Amelia Kensington. She was not found after the accident.”

Richard turned toward me. His eyes filled with tears.

“Amelia… this is your real name.”

I shook my head.

“My name is Elena. Mrs. Rosa gave me this name.”

“Who was Rosa?”

“The woman who saved me. She said that the car was burning and no one had remained there.”

Richard took the other silver piece from the box. On its back was a small mark: two letters and a date.

“Your mother and I ordered this necklace together,” he said. “We each kept half. When you disappeared, I thought that…”

He could not finish the sentence.

Eleanor came over to me.

“Amelia, do you have a scar near your left shoulder?”

Without words, I lowered the collar of the dress slightly. The burned skin from years ago appeared.

Eleanor knelt down. Richard covered his face with his hand.

Julian stepped back.

“This is only a coincidence,” he said. “Many people made necklaces like this.”

Richard looked at him with disgust for the first time.

“Thirty years ago, only four people knew about this necklace.”

“I did nothing wrong.”

“I have not accused you yet.”

Julian immediately took his phone from his pocket.

“I will call my lawyer.”

Eleanor’s phone rang again. This time the conversation was short. Her face first turned pale, then hardened.

“Richard, they found a second record in the archives as well. On the day of the accident, the driver of the car was not dead. Someone took him out of the hospital.”

“Who?”

Eleanor looked at Julian.

“The signature on the document belongs to his father. Julian Hale’s father.”

Julian dropped the phone from his hand.

“My father had nothing to do with this.”

But Richard was already looking at something else. His lawyer sent Eleanor a new message. She read it silently for several seconds, then showed the screen to Richard.

Richard read the text and turned toward me.

“Elena… no, Amelia… that night the child was not merely lost. Someone deliberately hid you. And now that person knows that you are alive…”

At that moment the back door of the hall opened. An unfamiliar man in a black jacket stood on the threshold and looked directly at me.
