My Ex Burst into My Workplace and Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone, but He Heard One Word from Me and Immediately Turned Pale

The first glass shattered at nine seventeen in the evening, and the next second I realized that Ryan Mercer had barged into my life again.

In the Halcyon restaurant, forty floors hung above the river. Behind the dark glass walls, the lights of Chicago flickered, while the candles on the tables swayed as if even the city were holding its breath. I was assigning twenty-three employees when I heard his voice at the entrance.

“Where is she?”

My fingers automatically slipped into my pocket and touched a small silver lighter. Two words were engraved on it: “Don’t give up.” I had received it from my sister the day before I escaped. Back then, those words seemed to me only letters scratched into an object.

I had not seen Ryan for three months.

Three months had passed since, while he was at a basketball game, I packed two suitcases, took only the money from our joint savings that had been accumulated from my salary, and moved into a small apartment in Ravenswood. I blocked seven different numbers. For the first time, I managed to look at myself in the mirror in the morning without hearing his voice: “You would be beautiful if you lost forty kilograms.”

That evening I was wearing a dark green dress. It fit my body exactly. My shoulders were straight.

Ryan opened the door as if it were still his house. He brought in the smell of alcohol and cold rain.

“So, there you are,” he sneered. “General Manager Lena Brooks.”

He pushed aside the frightened hostess and came toward me. I went out to meet him myself before security had time to do so.

“You have to leave.”

“You talk to me like this now?”

“This is my workplace. You are drunk and you have no right to be here.”

His smile disappeared. I knew this expression. Ryan became most dangerous when someone noticed his humiliation.

“They put a pretty dress on you and you think you became important?”

“Leave.”

“Everyone is looking at you. They see how a desperate, fat woman is trying to stand beside people to whom she does not belong.”

One of the waiters set a glass on the table so hard that the wine spilled. An old pain opened in my heart, but this time I did not fold in on myself.

“For three years you silenced me,” I said. “But today I will make everyone hear what you were doing.”

Ryan grabbed me by the wrist.

“Be quiet.”

!!!  Meine eigene Tochter sah, wie die Geliebte mich vor dem Restaurant schlug – doch als ich Nathan ansah, wich er plötzlich zurück

“Let go of my hand.”

“Or what?”

On the second floor, behind smoked glass, Gabriel Voss put his whiskey glass on the table. He had been coming to the Halcyon for almost two months, but he had never come to me. They said that in Chicago men pronounced his name in whispers. I only knew that whenever a client humiliated an employee, Gabriel always watched calmly.

Marcus Hale stood beside him.

“Is that the man?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Should I go downstairs?”

Gabriel did not take his eyes off me.

“Not yet. She has to defeat him herself.”

Ryan let go of my hand, but only because he picked up a heavy crystal decanter from the table.

“You stole money from me,” he roared. “You took six thousand dollars.”

“It was money saved from my salary.”

“It was my money!”

“You lost it gambling. And I paid the apartment rent, for food, and your debts.”

Security guards moved behind him. I stopped them by raising my hand. I did not want him to change my story again and say that I had needed to be rescued.

“Ryan,” I said, “you took money from my card. You lied to my sister. Then you told everyone that I was losing my mind.”

The music in the restaurant stopped. All twenty-three employees were looking at us.

Ryan raised the decanter.

And just then the entrance door opened for the second time, while Marcus put his hand to his ear and quietly said:

“Gabriel, they are already here…”

The decanter stopped in the air.

Ryan looked toward the door, and I looked back too. Two police officers entered, but my name was not written on their uniforms, and they were not looking at Ryan.

Marcus went down the stairs.

“Put the decanter down,” he told him.

“Who the hell are you?”

“The one who is counting your mistakes tonight.”

Ryan put the object down, but stepped toward me.

“You planned all this, didn’t you?” he whispered to me. “You clung to that man and now you are playing the hero.”

Gabriel appeared in front of me.

“Touch her one more time and the conversation is over.”

Ryan burst out laughing.

“You do not know who you are dealing with.”

“I know exactly,” Gabriel answered.

One of the officers took Ryan by the wrist. Ryan shook his head.

“Lena, tell them this is your house! Tell them I had the right to come in here!”

!!!  Part 4 — After dinner, my husband locked my son and me in the room, but the stranger who came to the door suddenly turned pale

For the first time I could no longer see in his eyes the man I had been afraid of. I saw only a person drowning in his own lies.

Gabriel looked at Marcus.

“Show him the recording.”

Marcus turned on his phone. Ryan’s face appeared on the screen, but the Halcyon was not visible there. In the recording he was saying to an unknown man:

“Tomorrow morning blame everything on Lena. If she resists us, we will no longer need…”

The video suddenly stopped.

The officer told me that the recording was only the beginning and that the real answer was in the folder Gabriel was holding…

Marcus opened the folder’s lock directly before my eyes. The smell of rain still remained in the room, and the shards of the broken glass on the floor reflected the light.

“What is this?” the officer asked me.

Gabriel handed him the folder.

“Bank statements, camera recordings, and messages sent by Ryan Mercer. For three months he had been taking money from Lena’s accounts. But that is not all.”

The officer unfolded the first sheet. My name was written there, and beneath it was a signature that seemed to be mine.

“This is a loan agreement,” he said. “Twenty-eight thousand dollars.”

“I did not sign it,” I said.

Ryan shook his head.

“She is lying. I was simply helping her.”

Marcus placed the second document on the table.

“The signature is forged. The expert examination is here. And the loan amount was received by his gambling account that same day.”

My knees gave way. I leaned against the chair and gripped the silver lighter so tightly that its edge dug into my palm.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ryan looked at Gabriel. “Who are you at all?”

“The person who believed your frightened victim.”

“She was my wife!”

“Former partner,” I corrected him. “And you never had the right to turn my life into money.”

The officer picked up the phone.

“Return to the recording.”

Marcus played the video from the beginning. On the screen Ryan was standing in a dark parking lot with an unknown man.

“You will approach her at the restaurant tomorrow evening,” Ryan was saying. “Scare her. Tell her that if she does not pay the debts, they will harm her sister too.”

!!!  NEGYEDIK RÉSZ — A mostohaanyám azt állította, hogy elvesztettem az eszemet, de amikor felálltam, az ügyvéd keze megremegett

The unknown man asked him:

“What if she is not frightened?”

Ryan sneered.

“Then break her hand. But I do not want her killed. I still need her signature first.”

Silence fell over the restaurant.

Ryan’s face turned pale.

“This is edited!” he shouted. “I would not say such a thing.”

Marcus turned off the phone.

“You said it yourself. Confirmed by your voice, the date, and the location.”

I looked at Ryan. For three years I believed that his cruelty was only words. Now I understood that a plan had already followed the words.

The officer put handcuffs on him.

“You are under arrest on charges of fraud, threats, and planning an assault.”

“Lena, do not listen to them!” Ryan shouted. “Gabriel is using you!”

Gabriel answered him calmly:

“I leave her the right to choose. You took that right away from her.”

Ryan was led away. The door closed, but I felt no relief. One more sheet remained at the bottom of the folder.

Marcus looked at it and his face changed.

“Gabriel, this arrived this morning.”

“What is it?”

He turned the sheet over. My address and my sister’s name were written on it.

For the first time Gabriel lost his composure.

“Lena, we have to leave right now. Ryan was not acting alone…”
