My Son Was Lying to Me on My Birthday, but When I Entered the Hall, His Smile Began to Disappear

On my seventieth birthday, my son texted me that his flight had been canceled, while I saw with my own eyes at the restaurant door how he hid his phone in his pocket.

For several seconds I stood motionless. His message was still glowing on the screen: “Forgive me, Dad. I can’t come. Happy birthday.”

Alejandro, meanwhile, was standing barely three meters from me and calmly talking to his wife, Renata.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

The smell of sea salt and fried fish drifted through the restaurant. A small orchestra played in the corner, while seven candles burned on my table—only seven, because the eighth had already been extinguished by the wind. Lucia always said that on a birthday I should leave one candle for a wish.

Lucia died three years ago. She had been my wife for thirty-eight years, and after her death every celebration seemed like an empty room. That evening, I thought Alejandro would fill that emptiness for at least a few hours.

He called me the night before.

“I’ll arrive early tomorrow, Dad. It’s your day. I won’t leave you alone.”

I thought there was warmth in his voice. Now I remembered that same voice, and ice gathered in my stomach.

I went to the window and looked into the hall. Alejandro was sitting beside Renata. With them were Federico Salazar, Renata’s father, two lawyers, and several people I had been seeing at my company for months. Heavy folders lay on the table.

Federico raised his glass.

“In the end, everything will remain in the family,” he said.

Alejandro smiled.

My company, “Montalvo,” was built by Lucia and me from a small warehouse. Now we had more than two hundred employees. I thought it was the fruit of our life. At that moment, for the first time, I felt that some people were dividing up my grave in advance, while I was still alive.

I was about to enter through the door.

“Alejandro!” I was about to call.

But suddenly someone grabbed me by the arm.

“Don’t go in yet.”

I grew angry and turned around. A man of about fifty was standing there. He had a small copper clasp on the collar of his gray coat, which he was nervously holding with his fingers. He held a thick folder in his hand.

!!!  My nephew asked me to sell the land, but when I cleared one stone in front of the people, his smile disappeared

“Let go of me.”

“If you go in now, they will deny everything. Then you will lose your only advantage.”

“Who are you?”

The man looked toward the hall.

“Ricardo Medina. I was dismissed from your accounting department two months ago.”

“Why?”

“Because I found money that was going from your company to Federico Salazar’s companies.”

His voice was quiet, but his words drowned out all the noise of the restaurant.

“How much money?”

“What I have proved so far is almost twelve million pesos.”

The glass was cold behind my back. My palms froze.

“Is my son involved in this?”

Ricardo looked straight at me.

“Your son does not merely participate; he controls everything.”

He took out copies of transfers, false invoices, and letters from the folder. Then he handed me the last sheet. It said: “Authorization for the transfer of fifty-one percent of the shares.”

My signature was visible.

But I had never signed this document.

“This is their next step,” Ricardo said. “First they will put the company into crisis, then they will convince you that you must transfer control in order to save it.”

In the hall, Alejandro raised his glass again. This time his eyes darted toward the window for a moment.

As if he knew I was standing outside.

“This still isn’t the worst of it, Don Miguel,” Ricardo told me.

“What else do I need to know?”

He reached into the bottom of the folder. His fingers touched something like a small wooden lock. Ricardo glanced toward the inspection door, then slowly opened a hidden pocket and put his hand inside…

Ricardo led me to the rear trunk of a car. Documents collected over months were piled there: false suppliers, advances for nonexistent work, and invoices from companies connected to Federico.

“Renata deliberately worsened the financial reports,” he told me. “They wanted to convince you that you had to transfer control to save the company.”

Then he showed me an authorization signed by Alejandro.

My son knew everything.

Elena, my former assistant, gave us three hidden memory cards. They showed fourteen nighttime entries into the financial system using Renata’s password. The dates matched the messages in which Alejandro asked me where I was and when I was returning.

!!!  Part 4 — Bruno hit me in the hospital corridor, but when his father mentioned the cameras, his smile suddenly disappeared

Then the doctor called me.

“Your son has been requesting life-expectancy forecasts for months,” he told me.

I sat down on a chair. He was not asking about my health. He was counting the time.

Soon strangers came to my house and photographed Lucia’s watches, paintings, furniture, and her beloved piano.

That day grief disappeared. In its place, clarity remained.

On Friday, at the shareholders’ meeting, Alejandro placed a pen in front of me.

“Sign, Dad, and you won’t worry anymore.”

Renata opened the folder. Federico sat as if he were already the owner.

I quietly turned on the screen. Alejandro’s face appeared in the first recording…

The closed hall of the restaurant appeared on the screen. The recording was clear. Federico was raising his glass, Renata was arranging the documents, and Alejandro was saying quietly:

“Dad will sign. He still thinks we are working to protect him.”

Silence fell over the room. Only the small fan of the projector could be heard.

Alejandro let the pen fall from his hand.

“It’s forged,” he said.

“Then why can your voice be heard?” I asked.

Ricardo opened the next file. A chain of transfers, false contracts, and a share-transfer document drawn up in my name appeared.

Renata stood up.

“This is the accountant’s revenge.”

“Then explain the fourteen nighttime entries with your password,” Elena said, laying the memory cards on the table.

Federico turned red.

“This is a family matter. It must not get outside.”

“It isn’t a family matter when you steal millions,” I replied.

Alejandro’s answer was still the hardest of all.

“Dad, you are already old. I was simply trying to arrange everything in time.”

“Were you preparing for my death?”

He lowered his eyes.

Ricardo took out the doctor’s letter. It said that Alejandro had requested information about my medical prognosis. Someone in the room quietly exhaled.

“You are my son,” I said. “How could you?”

“Because all of this was supposed to be mine in the end!”

!!!  I-am căutat lui Vincent Moretti soția potrivită, apoi mi-am pus demisia pe birou, iar cel mai temut bărbat din Manhattan a amuțit

His shout struck the walls.

And I placed the last folder on the table.

“This is exactly where you were wrong. You thought all my property was in this company.”

The notary opened the document. Several years earlier, I had transferred most of my property into a legal trust structure. Only the operating assets were to remain in Alejandro’s and Renata’s hands, and only under lawful conditions.

Renata’s face turned pale.

“This is impossible.”

“It is possible,” said the notary. “The documents are certified and valid.”

Alejandro collapsed into the chair. I thought everything was over.

But just then my phone rang. The number was unknown.

“Miguel Montalvo?” a woman’s voice asked. “If you want to find out who signed the last document connected with your wife, you must come alone to the old warehouse tonight.”

The call ended immediately.

Lucia’s name was heard for the first time in this story.

And I realized that the theft might not have begun after her death…

მეგონა, სიმართლე უკვე ვიცოდი. მაგრამ ბოლო დოკუმენტმა ყველაფერი თავიდან დამანახა.
