In the House Built Over Seven Years, My Mother-in-Law Settled in a Strange Family, but After One Question from Me, My Husband Lost Color in His Face

On the day when my mother-in-law entered our yard in a vehicle loaded with furniture, I still did not understand that taking away a house sometimes begins with a single key.

“Put the refrigerator downstairs,” Norma ordered. “Carry Mauricio’s and Fernanda’s things to the second floor.”

The bags fell from my hands. Four days earlier we had received the key to this house. For seven years we had saved money, worked on weekends, and brought every wall to life with our own hands.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

Norma looked at me as if I were a guest.

“We are moving in, Daniela. There is room here for everyone.”

“There may be room, but nobody gave permission.”

Fernanda brought down a box from the second floor.

“My mother told me this floor was for us.”

“Your mother is not the owner of this house,” I answered.

Mauricio struck the stair railing with his hand.

“Do not turn everything in the family into a contract.”

At that moment my husband, Andres, came out of the back workshop. He had an oil stain on his face and held an old screwdriver in his hand.

“Mother, put the things back,” he said.

Norma smiled.

“Son, do not make a scene. You are the most responsible one, after all. You will understand that your brother also needs help.”

Andres clenched his jaw. For years this phrase had been praise for him. But I already knew that in a family, “responsible” often meant the person whom they could most easily force to give in.

That evening my pots were arranged differently in the kitchen, while his father connected the television in the living room. Fernanda was measuring my closets.

The next morning I found a locksmith at the door. He held four new keys in his hand.

“Who called you?” I asked.

“I did,” Norma told me. “Everyone in the family must be able to enter.”

I snatched the keys from his hand.

“This is our house.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Be careful. You are the one who started entering the war.”

On Friday two men were measuring the walls. They were planning separate water and electricity connections.

“Who hired you?” I asked.

One of the men looked toward the stairs.

“Mrs. Norma. She said the second floor should become independent.”

I went up to Norma.

“Mauricio will not live here permanently.”

“You cannot decide that.”

“Andres and I are the owners.”

Norma snorted.

“Ask Andres whether this house was really built only with your money.”

That night I told Andres everything. He sat silently for a long time, touching with his fingers the wooden ruler my father had given me on the table.

“Mother says that Father sold the plot of land and used the money for our house,” he said at last.

“Did he really use it?”

“I do not know. They never transferred anything to me.”

The next day Fernanda left a tablet in the kitchen. A message from Mauricio appeared on the screen: “Mother says we are going to the lawyer on Tuesday. If Andres signs over the second floor, nobody will be able to throw us out afterward.”

I took a picture with my phone. Just then the door opened and Andres came in.

He read the message twice.

“Now I understand why Mother asks me every day at which notary office we registered the house.”

“Would you sign?”

“No.”

He opened the cabinet and took out a folder: the ownership extract, bank transfers, and construction contracts.

“On Monday we will check every payment,” he told me. “Then we will get to the lawyer before them.”

I took hold of the folder, but before that I saw its last sheet: three hundred and ten thousand pesos received from my parents, and in the purpose field there was only one word—“loan.”

Andres pulled out the sheet, and at that very moment a heavy knock sounded at the door. Norma was standing outside, holding a folder of new documents. She had already pressed down the handle and said: “Today you will find out who owns this house…”

Norma threw the folder onto the table in the room. There was not a single stamp inside, but her confidence was more frightening than any stamp.

“Tomorrow we are going to the lawyer,” she said. “Mauricio’s share must be formalized.”

“We were at the notary first,” I answered.

Andres put the ownership extract in front of her.

“The house is in both our names. Without your consent, not even one brick here can be divided.”

Norma lost color.

That same day the construction worker sent me her message: “Calculate the price of separating the second floor independently. Then it will remain for my younger son.”

In the evening Andres’s father, Hector, came quietly. He took a yellowed receipt from his pocket.

“I can no longer remain silent,” he told me.

The receipt said that three hundred and ten thousand pesos from a plot of land sold six years earlier had been transferred to cover Mauricio’s debts.

“This money was not used for our house,” I said.

“I know,” Hector lowered his head. “But Norma told everyone as if we had helped you.”

The next day, during the family dinner, Norma announced in front of everyone:

“Andres must give Mauricio his floor.”

Andres put down his fork.

“Fine. Then tomorrow we will all look at the documents together.”

Mauricio’s smile disappeared. And for the first time I felt that the truth was already standing on our side. But at the bottom of Hector’s receipt there was a strange signature. It did not belong to Norma…

The signature on the receipt was so faint that I could not read it at first glance. The next day, at ten in the morning, we arrived at the lawyer’s office. A glass of water stood on the table, and beneath it remained a round wet mark. Norma, Mauricio, and Fernanda sat beside one another. Hector stood by the door, as if he were still afraid of his own family.

“This is all a misunderstanding,” Norma began. “I only want to protect my children.”

The lawyer, Mrs. Irene, opened the ownership extract.

“One hundred percent of the house is in Andres’s and Daniela’s names. No other person has ownership rights here.”

Mauricio struck the table with his fist.

“My father gave money!”

Andres took a bank statement from the folder.

“Which money? This? My salary transfers? Or this, the three hundred and ten thousand pesos received from Daniela’s parents?”

Norma immediately exclaimed:

“That exact amount was our help!”

“No,” I told her. “It was a loan. My father made a contract and we paid him every month.”

Irene opened the next sheet. It was the document for the sale of the plot of land and, behind it, a bank statement.

“Three hundred and ten thousand pesos were transferred to a financial institution, under the recipient’s name: Mauricio Rivera.”

The room suddenly fell silent.

Fernanda looked at her husband.

“You said this money was for the house.”

Mauricio raised his head.

“Mother told me that everything had been settled.”

Hector laughed bitterly.

“We settled your debts. We did not give one peso for the house.”

Norma’s hands began to tremble.

“I was helping the family!”

“Help may be help, but a lie cannot turn into ownership,” Irene answered.

I thought we had already heard the hardest thing. But Irene took out a small sheet of paper.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich brachte dem gefürchteten Mafioso seinen Kaffee, als er hinter verschlossener Tür die Kontrolle verlor – dann erstarrte sein Blick

“There is one more thing. This morning the notary’s office contacted us. Someone presented a sample of Andres’s signature and requested preliminary preparation for transferring the second floor.”

Andres stood up.

“I did not sign anything.”

Irene turned the paper toward him. The signature really resembled his, but at the end one line was too long.

“This is forged,” Andres said.

Norma lowered her eyes. Mauricio, for the first time, looked at his mother with fear.

At that moment I received a call on my phone. The construction company’s number appeared on the screen. I answered.

“Mrs. Daniela,” said an unfamiliar voice, “regarding your house, we have already received a signed order. If you do not pay the amount this evening, we will refer the matter to court.”

“What amount?”

The man told me the figure and my breath caught. It was almost all our savings.

Andres turned toward me.

“Someone took out a loan in our name.”

Irene snatched the document from my hand and suddenly went to the window.

“This is no longer only a family dispute,” she said. “But the worst thing is that the phone number listed in the application belongs to Norma…”
