Clara’s father’s laughter could still be heard in the hospital corridor when the surgeon told me that they could no longer save my unborn child.
At fifteen minutes past midnight, I received a call from the hospital.
“Your wife survived,” a frightened woman’s voice told me.
That was all she said. Then the connection was cut off.
I reached the car without even remembering how I had put on my coat. Clara’s small silver elephant-shaped pendant had remained in my palm that morning. As I was putting it around her neck before leaving the house, she told me, “You’ll come back in the evening with the baby.” Now I had that object clenched in my fingers.
I saw Clara in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Her face was so swollen that I could barely recognize her. Her left shoulder was in a cast, dried blood had remained near her lip, and purple bruises ran together across her arms. Machines were breathing instead of her.
“What happened to her?” I asked the surgeon when he quietly closed the door.
The doctor did not look me in the eyes.
“She has three broken ribs. Internal bleeding. Her collarbone is broken.”
“What is wrong with the baby?”
He lowered his head for several seconds.
“We could not save her.”
The white wall of the corridor suddenly came very close. I put my hand on the windowsill, but my fingers were still trembling.
“How many men attacked her?”
“At least nine.”
Nine.
I already knew their names. Clara’s father, Guram, and his eight sons. For years they had presented Clara’s obedience as love. Our marriage was betrayal to them, because Clara had dared for the first time to choose her own life.
I went out into the corridor.
Nine men were standing right there. One had a bloody scratch on his jaw, and a strand of Clara’s hair was stuck to another’s hand. They were laughing as though they had played a family joke, not carried out a death sentence.
“Will you teach your wife obedience now, at least?” one of the brothers said to me.
“You will never touch my wife again,” I answered.
Guram stepped forward. An old gold ring gleamed on his fingers.
“Money is not power, boy. You are only a rich businessman.”
For six years, that was what they had thought.
Clara knew that I had companies. She did not know why ministers called me before meetings began, why the owners of banks asked me for advice, or why the people who controlled half the city fell silent.
I had hidden this world from her in order to protect her.
But at that moment I realized that my silence had become a weapon used against Clara.
I took out my phone and wrote only six words: “Black Protocol. Carry out every order.”
I pressed the send button.
Within seconds, the first phone rang. One of the brothers looked at the screen and lost color.
“My accounts… they froze them.”
Another was called and told that federal investigators were entering his office. The third learned that the largest investor had canceled the contract.
Black cars stopped at the entrance. People dressed in dark suits entered the hospital and silently occupied the corridor.
Guram stopped laughing for the first time.
“Who are you?” he asked me.
“The reason no one has touched your family for six years.”
My phone vibrated again. It was a report from the security service. I opened it, and surveillance footage from the hospital appeared on the screen.
One of Clara’s brothers was handing an envelope to the surgeon.
I stared at the screen, then looked toward the intensive care door. The doctor had told me that Clara was stable.
But the footage showed a time: forty minutes after Clara had been brought in.
And then I realized that the attack might not have ended at the hospital…
I paused the footage.
“Who recorded this?” I asked the head of security.
“The camera. But the file was deleted. A copy reached us only one minute earlier.”
The surgeon came out into the corridor.
“Mr. Adrian, please calm down.”
“Why did you take the envelope?”
A small drop of sweat slid down his face.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
At that moment, an alarm sounded from Clara’s room. I opened the door, but a nurse put her hand against my chest.
“You cannot enter!”
“My wife is in there.”
Inside, the machine made a sharp sound. The surgeon looked to the side, as though he was waiting to see whether someone would give him an order.
The head of my security handed me a phone.
“Sir, a car has left the hospital’s underground parking lot. Something resembling an incubator was visible on the back seat.”
Guram heard this and was truly frightened for the first time.
“Clara’s baby is dead,” he whispered.
I turned toward him.
“You already knew this?”
He could not answer me.
The surgeon stepped backward too.
At that moment I realized that this was not only about revenge. They had taken something. Or someone.
The head of security told me in a whisper:
“We found the car’s route. It is going to the old children’s clinic.”
I ran toward the door, but he stopped me with his hand.
“You cannot go in there alone. It may be a trap.”
“If my child is alive, I will get there before they tear him from their hands.”
He looked me in the eyes, and the phone rang again. On the other end was a voice that for six years I had heard only in whispers…
“Adrian, it’s Levani,” the voice said. “Your child still has a heartbeat.”
I gripped the phone so tightly that my nails sank into my palm.
“Where is my child?”
“At the old children’s clinic. The surgeon arranged his transfer. He told us the child was dead so the family could gain time.”
The surgeon stepped backward.
“That is a lie!” he shouted.
The head of security pressed him against the wall. Guram sat down on a chair and covered his face with both hands.
“You told me the child could not survive,” he said quietly.
The surgeon looked at him.
“You told me that if I did not help, you would put your sons in prison.”
“You killed my child!” Guram roared.
“No,” I told him. “All of you decided that declaring her dead would be easier than admitting your own crime.”
At that moment, a nurse rushed out of the intensive care unit.
“Clara has regained consciousness!”
I entered the room. Fear still stood in her eyes, but she found my hand.
“The baby…” she whispered.
“He is alive, Clara. I promise I will bring him back to you.”
There was no strength in her fingers, yet she touched the pendant that I was holding in my hand.
“They said they would take him… if I resisted, I would never see the baby again.”
“Who?”
Clara looked toward the surgeon.
“My father. And only one of my brothers knew that the baby was alive.”
The men in the corridor looked at one another. One of the brothers quietly slipped toward the back exit.
A security employee caught him immediately, but his phone was already ringing.
An unknown number appeared on the screen. He accidentally turned the call on speaker.
“If you cannot bring the baby down, tell Clara’s husband that the next danger will not come from his companies,” said a woman’s voice. “It will enter Clara’s room directly.”
The call ended.
Everyone fell silent.
I stood beside Clara’s bed, while black cars gleamed in the rain beyond the window. I knew that woman’s voice.
It belonged to the person I had trusted six years earlier, when I built my secret world to protect Clara.
And now she was already in the hospital…
