Part 4 — He left me covered in blood in the emergency room and went to another woman, but after one call from me Dante’s face suddenly turned pale

The message was still visible on the screen when the operating-room door closed behind me.

All night I could not understand whether I was hearing my child’s heartbeat or simply the sound of the machine in a dream.

When I woke from the operation, it was dawn.

The little girl was alive.

As weak as a baby born twenty-four weeks early, tangled in tubes and covered with tiny veins beneath transparent skin, but alive.

I became a mother.

That same morning Dante made twenty-nine calls.

Gerard answered none of them.

Marco called only once.

“Mrs. Moretti, Dante says he can fix everything.”

“Can he?”

“That is what he thinks.”

“Then for the first time in his life, let him think.”

Dante’s people stood in front of the hospital. Black cars were half-buried in the snow. Security workers tried to move through the corridor, but federal agents had already occupied every exit.

Elena came to my bedside.

“Your husband is trying to enter the banks.”

“Did the banks let him in?”

“No. The Caldwell order was carried out.”

“And Viviana?”

Elena looked away.

“We found her last night. She was trying to escape from the hospital parking lot.”

“Was she hurt?”

“No. But in her car we found printed information about your child.”

My heart clenched.

“What information?”

“Your home address, the child’s estimated date of birth, and the security schedule.”

At that moment everything fell into place.

Viviana’s threat had not been words spoken simply out of jealousy.

Someone wanted to use my daughter.

But who?

At noon Elena turned on a recorder in the meeting room. The recording had been made in Dante’s office, three weeks earlier.

His voice sounded through the room.

“If Lucia ever resists us, the child will be her weak point.”

Viviana’s voice answered:

“And if she dies?”

After a short pause Dante said:

“Then everything will still remain with me.”

I was sitting on a chair and listening to my own husband as an unfamiliar person.

!!!  NEGYEDIK RÉSZ — Tíz év után túl drágának neveztek, és amikor az utolsó dobozommal kiléptem, a vezérigazgató mosolya hirtelen megfagyott

This was not a rumor.

This was not my resentment.

It was his voice.

His words.

His decision.

Marco stood by the wall and could not look me in the eyes.

“You knew?” I asked.

“Not everything.”

“But you knew something.”

He lowered his head.

“I knew Dante was giving Viviana the plans of your house. I thought he only wanted to intimidate you.”

“And why didn’t you warn me?”

“Because I was afraid of him.”

“Are you no longer afraid now?”

“Now you are no longer alone.”

That evening the court judge issued a temporary protective order. Dante was forbidden to approach me, call me, or enter the child’s unit.

I did not feel revenge.

Only exhaustion.

When I entered the neonatal unit, a small paper star hung on my girl’s incubator. The nurse told me that she did not yet have a name.

“The mother will choose,” she said.

I placed my finger against the glass.

“Nora,” I said quietly. “Your name will be Nora.”

Three days later Dante’s lawyer came to my room.

He wore an expensive suit, but there was tension in his eyes.

“Mr. Moretti is ready for an agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“He will return the house, the accounts, and personal protection to you. In exchange, you will cancel the Caldwell procedure and not use the recording publicly.”

“And Nora?”

“Mr. Moretti is requesting joint custody.”

I looked at him for a long time.

“The man who said that in the event of my death everything would still remain with him?”

The lawyer lowered his eyes.

“The recording may be challenged in court.”

“But you heard it too.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell Dante that I want nothing from him. Neither the house, nor the money, nor an apology. Only that he never come near my child again.”

The lawyer stood up.

“You may regret this for your entire life.”

“I already regretted it. For six years.”

He left.

A week later we transferred Nora to Harrington Clinic. From the room’s window the northern part of the city was visible, and in the morning sunlight fell on the baby’s incubator.

!!!  Ich saß im Rollstuhl, als der kleine Sohn meiner Haushälterin mir eine Frage stellte – und meine Ärztin plötzlich verstummte

Dante’s empire collapsed that same week.

The banks froze the accounts.

His partners hired lawyers.

Viviana gave testimony in order to lessen her own punishment.

A case was opened against Dante on charges of fraud, money laundering, and threats. I did not shout at him in court.

I simply told the truth.

“He knew that I was dying. He knew that the child was in danger. And he still left.”

Dante did not look at me the entire time.

After the trial, when the security officers were taking him away, he still managed to say one sentence to me.

“Lucia, did you ever love me?”

I stopped.

“I loved you. But love cannot save you if you yourself choose its destruction.”

Then I left.

Three months later I brought Nora home.

The house was no longer the Moretti mansion. According to the Caldwell agreement, the old house was sold, and with its money I bought a small, bright house by Lake Michigan.

No one there knew Dante’s name.

In the mornings I prepared Nora’s bottle, opened the window, and let the cold air coming from the lake into the room.

On Wednesdays I went to the law firm. Gerard offered me financial supervision at my father’s foundation.

At first I wanted to refuse.

Then I realized that I was no longer afraid of money.

I was only afraid of people who used money as a mask for love.

At six months old Nora drew her first picture. There were three figures on the paper: me, her, and a large yellow sun.

The third figure was small and stood on the other side of the lake.

“Who is this?” I asked.

Nora put the pencil in her mouth and smiled.

I did not force an answer.

In winter the first snow came.

That morning Dante sent me his last letter.

“I am undergoing treatment. I have understood everything. Please, at least for Nora, give me permission to return.”

!!!  Na véspera de Natal, meu ex-marido invadiu minha casa procurando um amante — mas, ao me ver, sua mão começou a tremer

I read the letter several times.

Then I forwarded it to Gerard.

“Shall we send an answer?” he asked.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I stood by the window. Nora was sitting on the wooden floor and watching the snow.

“Silence is also an answer.”

That evening Nora stood independently for the first time. She spread her little hands and took a step toward me.

I caught her.

I hugged her so tightly, as if the whole world fit in my arms.

In the bedroom closet I still kept the things from that night: the hospital paper, Whitmore’s number written in blue ink, and Dante’s wedding ring.

The ring no longer shone.

One day I put it in a small wooden box where Nora’s first sock lay.

Not because I was waiting for Dante to return.

Because I wanted never to forget when I decided to save myself.

Outside, snow was falling silently.

Laughter could be heard from Nora’s room.

I closed the window and looked at the ring for the last time.

Then I locked the box.

And this time I was the one who closed the door.

Missed the beginning?
