He left me covered in blood in the emergency room and went to another woman, but after one call from me Dante’s face suddenly turned pale

I was lying on a blood-soaked bed in the emergency room when my husband let go of my hand and went to help another woman.

It was Thursday, eleven seventeen at night. Outside Chicago it was freezing, white steam was gathering on the windows, and under the harsh lights of St. Catherine’s Medical Center I was trying not to lose my child’s heartbeat.

I was not twenty-one weeks, but had carried for twenty-one weeks more. My little girl was not twenty-one, but was twenty-one weeks further along in my womb—I was thirty-one weeks pregnant. The doctor said the placenta had begun to detach and both our lives were in danger.

I remembered the cold kitchen tiles. I remembered crawling to the phone and leaving a red trace of blood on my palm. Most clearly, I remembered how the baby’s movements weakened.

That frightened me more than the blood.

Dante came in twenty-five minutes later. He was wearing a black wool coat and carried the smell of expensive perfume. Behind him stood Marco Bellini, the head of security, who could always control everything.

That night he could control nothing.

“Does she still have a heartbeat?” Dante asked.

“She does, but your wife is in serious condition,” Doctor Emmanuel Okafor answered. “We have started two transfusions. We may need an immediate cesarean.”

Dante took my hand. My fingers were cold.

“You almost scared me to death,” he told me.

“You weren’t answering me,” I barely said.

His thumb stopped on my hand.

“Where were you?”

That question did not need an answer. For months I had found a woman’s perfume on his coat, hotel receipts in his work bag, and traces of red lipstick on his whiskey glass. I knew about Viviana Rossi, but I had never made an accusation without evidence.

Now the bloody shirt itself was evidence.

Dante’s phone rang. Once. Then again.

“Don’t answer,” I told him.

He looked at the screen and went behind the curtain.

“Viviana, calm down,” I heard his quiet voice. “I can’t now… no, don’t say that… I can’t call the police…”

Pain struck my abdomen so hard that my breath stopped. The monitor quickly began clicking.

“Lucia, turn onto your side,” the doctor told me.

Dante returned to me.

“What did she say?” I asked.

“Nothing you should worry about.”

I almost laughed.

“Dante, I am bleeding to death here.”

He fell silent.

“She said she would hurt herself,” he finally said.

“Then call an ambulance.”

“She needs to talk to me.”

“Of course,” I replied. “She needs you.”

The green line on the monitor suddenly dropped. Dante gripped my wrist.

“I’ll be gone for thirty minutes and come back.”

The doctor looked at him sternly.

“In her condition, the patient cannot be left alone.”

Dante seemed not to hear him. Then he removed his wedding ring and placed it on the metal tray beside the bed.

“Lucia…”

“Go,” I told him.

“I will come back.”

“You have already gone. You are simply walking through the door now.”

He froze. I thought he had finally understood what he was doing. But then he turned and left.

His footsteps disappeared behind the curtain. The ring gleamed coldly on the tray.

Eleven minutes later I asked the nurse for a pen.

“Whom are you calling?” Patrice asked.

“A person I have not spoken to in four years.”

I dialed Gerard Whitmore’s number from memory. He was the chief lawyer of my father, Aldo Visari. The man whose empire I had once turned my back on in order to begin a quiet life with Dante.

“Whitmore speaking.”

“Gerard, listen to me carefully. I may lose consciousness soon.”

Something in his voice changed immediately.

“Lucia? Where are you?”

“At St. Catherine’s. It’s a pregnancy complication. Dante left me.”

A long silence fell.

“What do you need?”

I looked at the ring lying on the tray.

“Activate Harrington. Change my medical authorization. Revoke all of Dante’s permissions.”

“Are you sure?”

“I called my husband when I was lying in blood on the kitchen floor. He answered me, saw me, and still went to another woman.”

For the first time my voice did not tremble.

“Prepare the divorce papers too.”

Whitmore exhaled heavily.

“Anything else?”

“Fully activate my supervisory right in the Caldwell agreement.”

The silence was heavier this time.

“Lucia, this step will affect Dante’s entire business.”

“I know.”

“Your father will find out and come here.”

A tear ran from my eye.

“Let him come.”

“And where should Dante take you?”

I took hold of the ring, but did not put it on my finger.

“Arrange it so that my husband does not know where I am being taken.”

At that same moment, in the hospital corridor, Dante’s phone lit up again. He still did not know that one call from me was locking the door of the world he had built from the inside…

Gerard could not answer for several seconds. I was looking at the ring placed beside the bed and feeling the place in my heart where Dante had lived for six years becoming empty.

“Lucia, if you activate the Caldwell clause, Dante’s accounts will be temporarily frozen,” he said.

“Temporary is enough.”

“We will transfer you to Harrington Clinic. Your father’s people are on the way.”

“I don’t want my father’s people. I want you.”

“I am already coming.”

The door opened and Marco entered. For the first time I noticed fear on his face.

“Dante is asking where Lucia is,” he told me.

“Tell him he no longer has permission to speak with me.”

Marco looked at the ring.

“Madam, this could lead to war.”

!!!  Part 4 — They didn't invite me to their country house, but after my calm reply, my daughter's smile suddenly vanished.

“He started the war when he left me at a bloody bed.”

At that moment the doctor told me that the baby’s heartbeat had stabilized, but the operation was still unavoidable. For the first time that night, I breathed out.

Before the nurses moved me, my phone rang from an unknown number.

“Lucia,” Viviana’s voice said, “if you take Dante away, your child will never be safe.”

My blood froze.

“Is that a threat?”

“It is a warning.”

The call ended.

Marco immediately reached toward his weapon, but I stopped him.

“Do not touch anyone. Just have this call recorded.”

Gerard answered me calmly:

“It has already been recorded.”

Then an unknown woman appeared beside my bed, holding a small leather folder.

“Mrs. Moretti, I am a federal auditor. I came on behalf of your father.”

She opened the folder.

“Here is the first document Dante must never see…”

The unknown woman placed the folder on the bed. From the outside it was an ordinary dark-green leather bag, but my father’s family crest was visible on its clasp.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Elena Marshall. Federal Financial Audit Service.”

Marco stood at the door.

“No one can enter here without permission.”

Elena looked at him calmly.

“That is exactly why I came now. I already have permission.”

Gerard was connected by video call. His face appeared faintly on the phone screen.

“Lucia, you need to know the truth before they take you into surgery,” he said. “The Caldwell agreement is not only a divorce-protection clause.”

“Then what is it?”

Elena took out the first document.

“Six years ago, on the day of your wedding, four hundred eighty million dollars was transferred from a trust registered in your name into Dante Moretti’s companies.”

I closed my eyes.

“I did not have four hundred eighty million dollars.”

“You did. Your father left this money in your name so that you could invest it in the expansion of Dante’s business. But he had one condition: the money remained entirely your property, and your husband was given only management rights while you were alive and the marriage continued in good faith.”

Gerard showed a second sheet.

“Dante bought ports, warehouses, restaurants, and security companies with this money. However, in the annual reports he recorded these assets as his own capital.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Your father asked me not to intervene until you asked for it yourself.”

Elena placed her finger on the last page of the document.

“Here is the decisive clause. If Dante abandoned his wife in a life-threatening medical condition, that was considered a serious breach of the agreement. All assets he acquired with your money immediately passed under your control.”

It seemed as if the oxygen disappeared from the room.

Marco lowered his head.

“That is why you activated Caldwell…”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Después del nacimiento de mi bebé, me escondí bajo la cama y la enfermera que entró dejó de sonreír

“Yes,” Elena said. “Now Dante is no longer the owner of his own empire. He is only a temporary administrator until the investigation is completed.”

The door flew open noisily. Dante rushed in, with two men behind him.

“Lucia, what the hell is this?” he shouted.

For the first time I saw him losing control.

“The doctor said they are taking me into surgery,” I answered. “You can go out for another thirty minutes. Like then.”

“These are my companies!”

Elena handed the document toward him.

“No, Mr. Moretti. They were built with the money of the woman you left in the hospital.”

Dante seized the paper. He read it. His face turned ash-gray.

“This is forged.”

“That is your signature,” Gerard said.

“Lucia, your father deceived you. He used your property as a weapon.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But you signed it too.”

Dante leaned toward me.

“I loved you.”

Pain struck my abdomen again.

“Love is not what you remember when your money freezes.”

He took out his phone.

“It was Viviana’s call. She was in danger.”

“And she threatened me with my child’s safety.”

Dante’s face changed.

Elena said calmly:

“This call was recorded and has already been forwarded to the investigator.”

For the first time Dante could not answer anything.

Then my doctor came in.

“It is time for surgery.”

Dante stepped back toward the door.

“Lucia, this is not the end of everything.”

“I know.”

When they wheeled me through the corridor, an unknown message arrived on my phone. The text was only one sentence: “If you do not cancel Caldwell, Dante’s hidden partner will make sure your child never forgets…”
