Part 4 — I Removed the Plaster from an Eight-Year-Old Boy’s Hand, and When His Mother Saw the Strange Box, She Lost the Color in Her Face

When the call ended, only the sound of the monitor remained in the room.

Levan took my phone from me.

“Save the number. Don’t delete anything.”

Maratha immediately changed her tone.

“I want to cooperate with you,” she said. “But this doctor is kidnapping my son. The recording is fake. The bracelet belongs to Daniel, and he had access to the child’s room.”

“Where is Daniel?” Levan asked.

Maratha bit her lips.

“I don’t know.”

“You said that you didn’t kill him.”

Her face lost its color again.

Levan signaled to the security officers to put handcuffs on her. Maratha no longer resisted. She only watched the boy, who was being taken to the operating room.

“Mother,” the boy said very weakly, “don’t leave me now.”

Maratha looked away.

This affected me more than her shouting had.

The operating-room door closed. The white light came on.

Maratha’s lawyer came forty minutes later. He demanded to enter the ward and was holding a flat leather bag in his hand.

“My client is a minor,” he told me. “You cannot force him to talk.”

“We are keeping him alive,” I answered. “Talking is the police’s matter.”

The lawyer whispered something to Maratha. She nodded.

“The recording was obtained illegally,” she said. “All of this will be canceled.”

Levan answered calmly:

“We do not have only the recording. We have hospital cameras, the medical report, the child’s account, photographs, and the insurance policy of which you are the beneficiary.”

Maratha raised her head.

“Where did you find the policy?”

“In your house, under the child’s mattress. Daniel’s passport was there too.”

The lawyer closed the bag.

“I am no longer staying in this case,” he said. “You asked me to hide the disappearance of the child’s father. Now you will explain that yourself in court.”

For the first time, Maratha was left completely alone.

Several hours later the surgeon came out. The boy had survived, but the fingers of his hand were severely damaged. The doctors stopped the infection. No one yet knew whether he would be able to use his hand fully.

I entered the ward. The bronze-colored bracelet lay beside the bed. The red enamel bird glittered in the light.

The boy opened his eyes.

“Did they find Father?” he asked me.

“Not yet. But Levan is looking.”

“Is he alive?”

I had no answer to this question.

The next morning Daniel’s car was found below the river, in an old culvert. He was alive, had a broken shoulder, and had spent the whole night in the cold. He said that Maratha had abducted him in the car, but on the way he had managed to jump out. It was he who had hidden the recording in the boy’s bracelet and asked the child to show it only to someone who would truly listen.

Daniel’s testimony connected everything.

Maratha had threatened him for months. She transferred the child’s insurance into her name. She had not intentionally broken his hand, but after the boy fell down the stairs and injured his wrist, she did not provide help. She deepened the wound and deliberately did not remove the plaster because she was waiting to receive the money.

Daniel tried to call the police. Maratha told him that she would take the child out of the country and blame him for the crime. Then she drove him toward the river in his car and turned off the road in the middle of the forest.

Maratha was arrested.

I heard her voice in court for the first time without the recording. She spoke calmly, as if telling the story of a neighbor.

“I simply needed money,” she said. “Taking care of the child was solely on me.”

Levan placed a voice recorder on the table.

Her voice sounded in the room again:

“You’ll endure another two weeks. If we remove the plaster, no one will pay the money.”

Maratha lowered her head.

Hearing her own words forced her for the first time to see what she was doing. Neither regret nor anger appeared on her face. Only emptiness.

I did not go to court on the day of the verdict. The boy was still undergoing rehabilitation, and being with him was more important.

His room in the hospital looked strangely empty. Only one drawing remained on the wall — a small red bird with its wings spread wide. The dirty plaster was no longer beside the bed. We sent it to the garbage container for examination, but I continued to feel that smell for a long time.

Three weeks later the boy was able to move his fingers.

“Look,” he told me and bent a finger slightly.

“I see.”

“Can’t I climb trees anymore now?”

“We probably can. But first we’ll practice on a low branch.”

“Will you climb with me?”

“If you promise that you’ll wear a helmet.”

He smiled. It was his first real smile since he had come to the hospital.

Daniel survived, but it took him a long time to recover his ability to walk. He received custody of his son and moved to a small apartment on the other side of the city. The court sentenced Maratha to a long prison term for the intentional neglect of a child, fraud, abduction, and assault on Daniel.

I continued working in the emergency department.

I changed only one thing.

I asked twice as many questions of every child whose parent accompanied them with an overly calm face.

Four months later the boy knocked on the door of my office. He still had a protective dressing on his hand, but he came in by himself.

“Doctor Sarah, I brought you a drawing.”

On the paper, two people stood under a tree. One had a bandage on his hand, while the other held a small red bird.

“Who is this bird?” I asked.

“The one who carries the truth,” he answered.

That evening Daniel called me.

“Maratha sent a letter,” he told me. “She says that she has changed. She wants to speak with the child at least once.”

“What do you think?”

He was silent for a long time.

“I used to think that I should be able to forgive everything for my son. Now I understand that forgiveness and opening the door are not the same thing.”

The next day Maratha’s letter came to me too. It was short.

“You destroyed my life. Still, help me so that the child does not hate me.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Minha amante foi expulsa da própria mansão diante de todos, mas quando meu marido tentou me humilhar, sua mão começou a tremer

I read the letter twice.

Then I wrote a reply:

“You did not destroy his life. You returned the choice to him only when others forcibly opened the door. Now he has the right to decide for himself whom he will open it to.”

I did not send the letter. I gave it to Levan, and he kept it in the case files. Sometimes peace means not sending an answer, but drawing a boundary.

The first snow came in December. A white layer covered the roofs of the hospital. The familiar smell of disinfectant stood in the corridor, but that night it no longer reminded me of plaster.

The boy sent me a photograph. In his hand he held a small wooden bird, which he had carved himself in the rehabilitation workshop. Red paint had gone over the edges.

I took the bronze-colored bracelet out of the drawer. Its red enamel bird still had all its wings.

I went to the window and raised the bracelet into the light.

This time I could no longer hear the voice hidden inside it.

There was only the sound of wings opening.

And the bird flew away.

Missed the beginning?
