My Mother-in-Law Sold the House and Demanded the Keys to My Apartment, but My Answer Erased Her Smile for the First Time

My mother-in-law calmly announced in the middle of my dining room that the house had already been sold, while I gripped the coffee cup so tightly that my fingers turned white.

“We sold the house, Ana,” Elene said, placing her bag on the chair. “Give us the apartment keys next week.”

Beside her stood my husband, Mauricio, with such a proud expression, as if he had built the entire building with his own hands.

“Mother will finally live as she deserves,” he told me.

I looked at them and heard only one thing: the ticking of the wall clock. With every beat, I understood more clearly that they had planned this conversation in advance.

“Which apartment keys?” I asked.

Elene raised her eyebrows.

“Don’t play games, dear. Your mother herself told you that they were giving you an apartment in the Americana neighborhood.”

Mauricio immediately placed his hand on my shoulder.

“We already agreed, didn’t we?”

“We?” I noticed the coldness in my voice.

“We are family, Ana.”

During eight years of marriage, this word had always meant one thing to him: I had to give in, and he had to receive.

At first it was groceries. Then his mother’s medicines, the bills, the roof of the house, and the old car that Elene’s husband no longer drove at all. Their house in Tlaquepaque was old, but fully paid for. They lived within their walls, not on the street. Despite this, Mauricio constantly repeated that his parents were drowning in hardship.

“Your mother asks for money every month,” I told him once.

“She has struggled all her life.”

“That does not mean I have to compensate for it all my life.”

Instead of answering, he put the glass back on the table. The bottom of the glass made a sharp sound against the wooden surface, and I flinched.

In recent months, something else had changed. Mauricio, who used to wear a shirt until its collar became like a kitchen rag, suddenly returned in expensive clothes. First shirts, then shoes, then perfume, skin creams, and appointments at the hair salon.

“Are you seeing someone?” I asked jokingly one evening.

He set the glass down so that the ice clinked inside it.

“Is taking care of yourself a crime now?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“But that’s what you meant.”

His anger was excessive. So excessive that in the end I apologized.

Two weeks later, we had dinner at Elene’s house. The pungent smell of roasted peppers filled the kitchen, and steam gathered on the window. Mauricio reached his hand toward me.

“Carla, pass me the napkins.”

Silence fell in the kitchen.

“What did you call me?” I asked.

!!!  Después de diez años, David rechazó casarse conmigo durante la cena y, a la mañana siguiente, dejó de sonreír

The color drained from Mauricio’s face.

“Nothing. I said ‘darling.’”

Elene immediately laughed loudly.

“He’s tired, dear. Men sometimes make mistakes.”

I said nothing else. That night I lay beside Mauricio and heard his even breathing. Inside me, however, something finally collapsed.

In the morning, after he left the house, I turned on the family tablet. It was connected to his work account. I did not need a password.

There I found Carla. Messages, photographs, pictures taken in the back seat of the car, and the same short sentences.

“Come down for ten minutes.”

“I’m coming already.”

“I can’t stay today, Ana suspects.”

My stomach turned. But I did not cry.

Then for eighteen days I quietly collected evidence: screenshots, six audio recordings, and videos taken from the cameras in our car. I also met with a lawyer.

That same week, my mother called me and said that the apartment in the Americana neighborhood was finally being transferred solely into my name.

Mauricio accidentally answered my phone before I came out of the shower. When I entered the room, he was standing by the kitchen door and smiling at me.

“Your mother told me everything.”

“She had no right.”

“We are husband and wife. What were you planning to do with the apartment?”

Three days later, he answered for me himself.

“We could give it to my parents. Elene has always wanted an apartment with an elevator.”

I looked at him and, for the first time since hearing Carla’s name, I became calm.

“Okay,” I said. “Tell your mother to be ready.”

Mauricio’s smile immediately returned. I looked at the black folder hidden in the kitchen drawer, with the dates from the car camera written on its top page. Elene reached toward it, and just then…

Elene picked up the black folder and opened it with a laugh.

“Documents?” she asked. “I hope transferring the apartment will not take long.”

Mauricio stood behind me.

“Ana, we are going to the notary tomorrow.”

The first sheet in the folder was blank. Below it was my lawyer’s number. They did not understand this.

“First, there is something you need to understand,” I said.

“Why is drama necessary?” Mauricio chuckled.

Elene struck the table with her hand.

“Our son took care of you for eight years. Now, at least once, do something for the family.”

“For the family.” That word already resembled a knife.

I closed the folder.

“Tomorrow we will go to the notary. But all together.”

Mauricio breathed out with relief. He did not understand that that evening I was preparing them not for the apartment, but for the truth.

At night I transferred copies of the car-camera recordings to a secure memory drive. In one recording Carla said:

!!!  My husband was marrying my sister when my nine-year-old daughter took the microphone at the ceremony and everyone fell silent

“When will you leave your wife?”

Mauricio answered:

“First I have to settle the apartment. My mother needs housing.”

I looked at the screen and my hands trembled. He had planned to deceive me not only for love, but for property as well.

In the morning, the lawyer called me.

“Ana, do not go to the notary alone. Today they will have a surprise.”

But before I could hang up the phone, someone knocked on the door as if the police were right behind them…

Someone knocked on the door again. It was nine in the morning, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the room. I took hold of the door handle, but Mauricio blocked my way.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me,” a man’s voice sounded. “Lawyer Levan.”

Mauricio looked at me in surprise.

“You brought a lawyer?”

“No,” I answered. “Our meeting at the notary is no longer happening today.”

Elene dropped her bag on the table.

“What do you mean, it’s no longer happening? The apartment belongs to us.”

Levan entered the room, holding a dark wood-colored folder. The heels of his shoes clicked sharply on the floor. He looked first at me, and then at Mauricio.

“Mrs. Ana, are you ready?”

Mauricio raised his voice.

“She has nothing to prepare here. She is my wife.”

“That is exactly why you all must listen,” Levan said.

He placed a small speaker on the table. My fingers were cold, but my voice no longer trembled.

The first recording began. Mauricio’s voice sounded from inside the car.

“Ana will sign soon. She thinks her parents simply gave her the apartment.”

Carla asked quietly:

“And then?”

“Then we will move Mother in. You will no longer have to hide either.”

Such silence fell over the room that even the hum of the refrigerator motor could be heard clearly.

Elene grabbed the chair.

“This is fabricated.”

Levan played the second recording. This time Carla’s voice sounded closer.

“Are you really planning to take the apartment from her?”

“I have no other way,” Mauricio answered. “She will forgive me everything anyway.”

Mauricio reached toward the speaker.

“Turn off this nonsense!”

I stood in his way.

“Listen to it to the end first.”

Then excerpts from the messages appeared on the screen. Dates, places, photographs. Carla was sitting in the front seat of the car. In one photograph, my wedding ring could be seen on Mauricio’s hand, while Carla had her arms around his neck.

Elene’s face turned pale.

“You have another woman?”

!!!  Part 4 — I Announced My Divorce from My Husband Directly from the Airport, but When He Saw the Post, He Suddenly Turned Pale in the Hospital Corridor

Mauricio looked at his mother as if he had remembered for the first time that she was in the room.

“It isn’t the way you think.”

“Then how is it?” I asked. “Tell me, why were you telling her that you were leaving me because of my apartment?”

He opened his mouth, but could not make a sound.

Levan took an official notice from the folder.

“The apartment belonged to your parents and was transferred by a gift agreement solely into Mrs. Ana’s name. The marriage was registered under the regime of separation of property. Your husband has neither rights to this property nor grounds to demand a signature.”

Elene struck the table with her fist.

“You told me everything was agreed!”

“Mother, be quiet!”

“I sold the house because of your words!”

Mauricio looked toward me.

“Ana, let’s negotiate.”

“We have already negotiated,” I told him. “You only did not know that the conversation was also taking place behind your back.”

Levan handed me the last sheet. It said that a divorce petition and a motion for temporary protection had already been filed.

For the first time, I saw fear on Mauricio’s face.

Then my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered the call.

“Ana, this is Carla,” a hoarse woman’s voice said. “Mauricio deceived both of you. But you still do not know the worst. Yesterday he signed a document in my name, and now I am going to the police…”
