I saw my husband in the role of groom at the wedding of a former classmate, but when he noticed me among the guests, the color drained from his face

Everyone in the wedding hall was applauding, while I was looking at the watch on my husband’s wrist—the one I had given him three years earlier on the night of our engagement.

The watch had a dark green dial and a small inscription on the back: “After everything.” Only the two of us understood these words. Alejandro had told me then that no matter how many years passed before we found each other, in the end we would still remain together.

Now he was marrying another woman wearing that same watch.

I stood among the guests, holding my phone and looking at the photographs sent by Valeria Mendoza. In the photographs, my house was visible. My living room. My terrace. The curtains in my bedroom.

Valeria turned toward me and raised her glass.

“How much do you like my future home, Gabriela?”

“It seems very familiar to me.”

“Alejandro told me that we will live there after the wedding. You are rarely at home, aren’t you?”

Her voice seemed to make a small crack in beautiful music. I did not let on that my fingers had gone numb.

For ten years I had worked in a federal agency connected with the country’s security. Because of my work, I was almost invisible on the internet. I could not publish photographs, could not say where I was, and sometimes could not even tell my husband in which city I was spending the night.

Alejandro knew all of this.

More than that, he always said that my discipline inspired admiration.

Now I understood that my absence had simply been convenient for him.

“Gabriela, you really came?” Valeria asked me, gathering the former classmates around her.

“I wrote to you that I would come.”

“I thought buying a gift would be difficult for you.”

Someone quietly chuckled.

“You can look after the envelope table, if you want,” she added. “Such help would suit your situation too.”

Her words took me back to the class years earlier, where she turned everything into a competition. Who dressed better. Who had more friends. Whose life looked more luxurious.

But I was no longer the quiet girl who learned to defend herself only at night, in her own room.

“Don’t worry, Valeria,” I said calmly. “Others will look after your table today.”

Her smile disappeared for one second.

Then applause broke out at the entrance.

“The groom has arrived!”

Valeria straightened her dress and went out onto the white path. I remained behind her, hidden among people’s backs.

Alejandro got out of a black car. He was wearing a dark suit. His face was calm. And on his right wrist, the watch I had given him was shining.

He looked over the guests.

!!!  Mio marito cacciò nostra figlia diciottenne mentre ero via, ma quando tornò con una neonata il suo volto impallidì

First he smiled at his father.

Then he looked at Valeria.

And finally his gaze stopped on me.

His step stopped.

I did not move. I only raised my phone so that he could see the photographs of my house on the screen.

Alejandro opened his lips, but made no sound.

Valeria turned toward him.

“What happened, Alejandro?”

He could not take his eyes off me.

And for the first time I saw how my husband was losing control.

The host went to the microphone and asked the guests to sit in their places. Alejandro’s father put a hand on his son’s shoulder.

“Go on, boy. People are waiting for you.”

Alejandro answered quietly:

“I need one minute.”

“Not now,” his father smiled, but his eyes hardened. “This is a family day.”

I knew that in a few minutes everyone would learn the truth. I simply did not yet know what was behind all of this.

Alejandro came toward me.

His fingers touched the watch strap. The same place where his hands had held mine three years earlier.

“Gabriela, please, not here.”

“Where, then?” I asked.

“I will explain to you.”

“You are getting married today.”

“This is not all as it seems.”

“Then how are the photographs of my house?”

Valeria now looked toward us as well. Fear appeared on her face for the first time.

Alejandro said quietly to me:

“If you raise your voice now, you will hurt many people.”

I could not understand whether it was a threat or a request.

At that moment a message came to my phone from my director, Mauricio Cárdenas: “Gabriela, the documents are ready. Do not open them until I call you.”

I had a thin brown folder in my pocket.

Alejandro saw its corner.

His face turned gray.

Valeria reached toward the folder, and at that very moment the hall door opened. On the threshold stood a strange man with an envelope sealed with an official seal in his hand, and he was walking straight toward me…

The man stopped in front of me and extended the document with both hands.

“Mrs. Gabriela Santos?”

“Yes.”

“This is for you. You must open it personally.”

Alejandro grabbed my arm.

“Take her outside,” he told the man. “This is a private event.”

The man pulled his arm away.

“You are not authorized for this document.”

Valeria asked in fear:

“Alejandro, what is happening?”

“Nothing,” he answered, but his voice no longer obeyed him.

The hall fell silent. The music stopped. More than a hundred people were looking toward us.

I placed the folder on my knees and examined the seal on the envelope. It was a state seal. Inside was something that would change not only my marriage, but Alejandro’s entire life.

“Gabriela, don’t open it,” he whispered.

“Why?”

“Because you can still walk away from all of this.”

“Me? You are the one marrying another woman.”

Valeria began to cry.

“Tell me that this woman is crazy.”

Alejandro looked toward her, but could not answer.

The man said sternly:

“Madam, we have no more time.”

I broke the seal.

The smell of paper and a small piece of wax remained on my fingers. My name was written on the very first page. On the second—Alejandro’s full name, his signature, and a date that was earlier than the day of our engagement.

Then I saw one sentence that stopped my breath.

At that same moment, the screen standing in the corner of the hall switched on by itself, and all the guests saw footage recorded by the camera in our house…

The living room of my house appeared on the screen. The footage was from two o’clock at night. Alejandro was sitting on the sofa, while Valeria stood beside him and was taking my photograph out of its frame.

“This woman will not return,” Alejandro was saying. “Her job will take everything away. The house, the money, and freedom too.”

Valeria’s voice was heard:

“But she is your wife.”

“Only on paper. Soon I will tell everyone that she disappeared.”

Someone in the hall exhaled loudly.

Valeria looked at the screen and stepped back.

“This cannot be real.”

I raised the document taken from the folder.

“The video is authentic. Its copy is kept in the agency’s archive.”

Alejandro came toward me.

“You do not understand what you are doing.”

“On the contrary. For the first time I understand everything.”

The man who had brought me the envelope introduced himself.

“I am lawyer Niko Beridze. These documents confirm that Alejandro Rivas signed several financial agreements in your name. Money transfers, loans, and attempts to transfer property.”

Valeria looked at Alejandro.

“You told me this house was yours.”

“Valeria, calm down.”

“You told me that your wife had been living abroad for years.”

“That was so.”

“But she was standing here!”

Alejandro looked at the watch again. Then I noticed that the engraved words on the back had been partially scraped away. He had been trying to erase the inscription.

“Why were you wearing it?” I asked.

“Because I still loved you.”

“Love is not stealing someone else’s house.”

Mauricio called me. I transferred the call directly to the screen.

“Gabriela, did you see everything?”

“Yes.”

“Then read the second page aloud.”

I straightened the paper.

“Mrs. Gabriela Santos is not missing, fugitive, or dead. She is a participant in an active covert operation, and evidence of financial crimes against her husband is protected.”

!!!  My son's life managed to save his sister, but on Hannah's eighteenth birthday she opened a letter and a guest turned pale

Silence descended over the hall.

Alejandro lowered his eyes.

“You knew all of this from the beginning?” he asked.

“No. I only knew that you were hiding something.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had a choice every time you brought Valeria into my house. When you took out a loan in my name. When you wrote ‘I love you’ in my phone and then married another woman.”

Valeria removed the wedding ring from her finger.

“You lied to me.”

“I lied to everyone,” Alejandro said.

He could not control this confession himself.

Niko opened a second folder.

“The main thing is not finished yet. These records show that Alejandro was not acting alone. Behind him stands a person who gained access to internal information from your agency.”

Mauricio’s voice hardened on the phone.

“Gabriela, leave the place immediately. We discovered that someone sold information about your operation this morning.”

I looked at Alejandro.

For the first time his gaze was directed not at Valeria, but at the back door of the hall.

Alejandro’s father, Dmitri Rivas, was standing there, holding a second phone in his hand.

A secret file from my agency was open on the screen.

Dmitri said calmly:

“You realized it very late, Gabriela. Whoever is watching this wedding will soon see your funeral too…”
