Part 4 — At My Pregnant Sister’s Funeral, Jason Came with Another Woman, but the Lawyer’s First Words in the Church Left Everyone Frozen

Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time the call on the screen was from an unknown number.

He answered.

“Daniel Hayes speaking.”

He listened in silence for several seconds.

Then his face changed.

“Understood. I will wait for you at the clinic’s back entrance.”

Jason immediately recognized his fear.

“Who was it?”

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

“Lily’s private investigator. He was in Houston when Lily asked him for help. He has the complete stair-camera footage, Jason.”

Rachel leaned against the wall.

“You told me the camera was broken.”

Jason turned toward her.

“Be quiet.”

“You told me Lily was alone.”

“Rachel, be quiet!”

His voice rang out in the church and people stepped back.

Daniel looked at the security guard.

“We already have sufficient grounds for the police.”

“You have not called anyone yet,” Jason roared.

“We called them,” I said. “Back when you sat in the front row with Rachel.”

His eyes stopped on me.

“You cannot do this to me.”

“I am doing nothing to you. I simply am no longer protecting you from the consequences you created yourself.”

The sound of police cars came from outside the church.

Rachel took Jason by the hand.

“Tell me that you really did not plan it.”

He pulled his hand away.

“This is none of your business.”

“I was your business all this time, wasn’t I?” Rachel’s voice broke. “I stood beside you at Lily’s funeral because you told me everything was over.”

“Everything is over,” Jason said.

“No,” Daniel answered. “Now it begins.”

The police officers entered.

Jason tried to escape, but two officers were waiting for him at the door.

“Jason Reed, you are under arrest on charges of attempted murder connected with Lily Reed’s death, destruction of evidence, and fraud.”

They bound his hands behind his back.

He looked at me again.

“Emily, listen to me. Everything is not as it seems.”

“I know,” I said. “That is exactly why I listened to Lily’s recording.”

Rachel was led away separately. She did not look at Jason again.

The next day, at six in the morning, Daniel and I went to the Austin Children’s Clinic.

The corridors smelled of antiseptic. Raindrops ran down the windows. The doctor opened the door for us and led us into a small room.

Noah was sleeping.

He was so small that both hands fit inside one blanket. He wore a white cloth bracelet on his wrist. The baby’s name was written on it, and below it—Lily’s surname.

I went to the bed.

“Hello, Noah,” I whispered.

He opened his eyes.

At that moment I realized that nothing could make up for losing Lily. Neither the arrest, nor the trial, nor the destruction of Jason’s life. But this child still existed. And my sister’s love continued to breathe in him.

Three weeks later, in court, I heard Jason’s own voice for the first time.

The prosecutor turned on an audio recording.

The recording had been made in Lily’s house.

“If the baby is born, everything will remain with me,” Jason was saying. “Lily will not be able to stop me.”

Rachel’s voice could be heard.

“And if it is not born?”

“Then the policy is mine.”

The stair-camera footage appeared on the screen. Lily stood on the top step of the stairs. Jason stood behind her. His hand touched Lily’s shoulder.

Then Lily fell down.

The courtroom fell silent.

Jason listened to his own voice and hid his face in his hands. For the first time he saw what his lie looked like in someone else’s eyes.

The judge sentenced him to a long prison term. Rachel pleaded guilty to financial fraud and decided to cooperate with the investigation. She had received only verbal promises from Jason, and now she learned the price of those words.

Lily’s house stood empty for a long time.

One evening I entered it alone. In the child’s room, a blue paper moon that Lily had cut out by hand still hung on the wall. On the windowsill stood her little music box. When I opened the lid, three notes sounded and immediately fell silent.

I could not throw it away.

Months later, Noah walked for the first time.

It happened in a small park in Austin. He held a wooden duck in his hand and looked back after every step.

“Come on, Noah,” I said. “I am here.”

He came toward me, stumbled, and fell onto his knees. Then he wrapped both arms around my neck.

That night I hung his drawing in the house. There were three figures on the sheet: a little boy, a tall woman, and a yellow sun.

“Who is this?” I asked.

Noah pointed first to himself, then to me, and finally to the sun.

“Mama,” he said.

The word was still unclear, but I understood it anyway.

We did not flee the city. We simply built a new life. I started working in the administration of the children’s clinic. Every morning I got Noah ready, put a little wooden duck in his bag, and we went to work.

In winter the first snow came.

Noah drew a circle on the window with his finger.

“Is Mama here?” he asked.

I sat down beside him.

“Yes, in love.”

He rested his head on my shoulder.

Jason sent me letters from prison twice. In the first he asked for forgiveness. In the second he wrote that he wanted to see Noah and explain everything.

I sent a reply only once.

“Noah needs peace. And I am no longer going to carry your crime. My answer is final.”

After that, nothing else came.

Daniel handed Lily’s belongings over to me. Among them was that little dark-brown folder, in whose corner Lily had written “Truth” in her own hand. The papers were no longer inside. I found only one white sheet.

!!!  Mi esposo me llamó al hospital por una recién nacida y, al susurrarme la verdad, dejó de mirarme a los ojos

“Emily, if Noah ever asks who his mother was, tell him that she fought for him to the very end.”

I placed the folder in the child’s room, on the bookshelf.

I brought the music box there as well.

Every evening, when I put Noah to sleep, he asks me to open it at least once. Three notes sound. Then silence comes.

But this time the silence no longer frightens me.

Lily’s truth was finally heard by everyone.

And Noah, in his little bed, was breathing peacefully.

Missed the beginning?
