Part 4 — Before Christmas, my husband’s family excluded me from the table, but in the morning his mother answered one call and lost the color in her face

“Even if this document is genuine, the apartment still cannot be sold,” I told the unfamiliar voice.

“I know, Mrs. Sveta,” the lawyer answered me. “That is why I am calling you. Maxim has already tried to register it.”

At seven o’clock in the morning we were sitting in my father’s kitchen. Milk was slowly warming on the stove, while thin lines of frost had curled across the window glass.

Maxim was calling me every five minutes.

I did not answer the first call.

On the second one Father told me:

“Listen at least once. Not to help him. For yourself.”

I picked up the phone.

“I am listening.”

“Sveta, this is a misunderstanding,” he began. “Mother is in a panic, the order did not arrive, the guests are already on their way.”

“Why did you draw up consent for the sale of my apartment?”

Silence fell on the other side.

“It was only a formal paper.”

“A formal paper with my signature?”

“I was doing it for you.”

For the first time I laughed. The laugh was silent and bitter.

“By selling my home?”

“Debts had accumulated, Sveta. Mother needed an operation. We had to save the family.”

“Your mother did not need an operation. Yesterday evening she was sitting in a restaurant.”

Maxim lowered his voice.

“You do not understand how many things I have done for you.”

Father placed a cup of tea in front of me. Under the cup was a piece of an old newspaper so that the table would not get wet.

“No,” I told him. “Now I understand very well.”

That same day the lawyer filed statements with the bank, the police, and the property registry. My account was temporarily blocked, but no one managed to withdraw the money. The sale of the apartment was also stopped.

Maxim tried to save everything.

First his lawyer called me.

!!!  My father said they would take me home, but the doctor turned off the screen, and my family's expressions suddenly changed.

“Your husband wants this to remain within the framework of a family matter.”

“It was a family matter when I did not pay for their table. A forged signature is already something else.”

“If you withdraw the complaint, he is ready to reimburse you for everything.”

“He cannot reimburse me for everything.”

“What do you mean?”

“Six years.”

The lawyer said nothing more.

The next day Maxim came to my father’s house. He stood in the snow, with mud frozen onto his shoes. In his hand he held a bag of the same color as the one with which he had previously brought me flowers.

I did not open the door for him.

“Sveta, I only want five minutes.”

I watched from the window. Previously, seeing him meant returning home. Now it meant only that I had to defend one more boundary.

Father opened the door, but did not let him beyond the threshold.

“My daughter will not speak to you anymore,” he told him.

“Mr. Valery, this is our marriage.”

“It was a marriage when your wife trusted you with signatures at the bank. Now it concerns documents.”

Maxim lowered his head.

“I made a mistake.”

“No,” Father said. “A mistake happens once. You prepared everything step by step.”

That evening the lawyer played the recording on a large screen. I, Father, and two investigators were sitting in the room. For the first time I heard my husband’s words to the end.

“Sveta will pay anyway. She has been paying for six years.”

It was his voice.

His laugh.

His confidence.

And suddenly I realized that the most painful thing was not the deception, but how certain he had been that I would endure it to the end.

The investigator stopped the recording.

“Does Mr. Maxim know that we have this material?”

“He knows,” I answered.

“And he still denies it?”

“He probably thinks that I will come again and settle everything.”

!!!  A férjem mindenki előtt kitagadott a saját otthonomból, aztán egyetlen kérdésemre elsápadt

That night Maxim sent me a voice message.

His voice was tired and hoarse.

“Sveta, Mother became ill. The guests left. We had only water and bread on the table. Did you really want to humiliate me like this?”

I listened, and for the first time there was no place for me in his words. There were only their consequences.

The next day Lyudmila Pavlovna called me.

“You destroyed the family.”

“No, Lyudmila Pavlovna. You destroyed the family when you considered my help an obligation.”

“Maxim was your husband.”

“That is why you trusted me.”

She breathed into the phone for a long time.

“Come back and we will forget everything.”

“And I no longer want to forget.”

I did not withdraw the complaint. The investigation confirmed that the signature had been forged, while part of the transfers from my card had been used by Maxim to cover personal debts. Lyudmila Pavlovna also had to admit that she knew about the order and the documents.

I was not happy about their fear.

I simply no longer tried to save them.

Three months later I sold the apartment not to cover anything, but by my own choice. I bought a small, bright house in a seaside town. On the first floor I arranged a room and started working in an online accounting service. In the morning I opened the window, the smell of the sea came in, and there was always fresh coffee on my desk.

Father came often. Every time he brought a cake and said that this time he had really paid for the order himself.

One Sunday a little girl, the daughter of my neighbor, came into the room. She was holding a sheet of paper.

“I drew this for you,” she told me.

On the sheet was a house, and in front of it hung a small golden dot.

“What is this?”

“A bell hanging on the door. So that you know when someone has come.”

!!!  A férjem egy másik nővel tért vissza a hajóról, majd el akarta venni a házunkat is — aztán elsápadt

I attached the sheet to the wall.

That same evening I received a final letter from Maxim. It said that he was beginning treatment, that his mother regretted it, and that if I were ever ready, they could start over.

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote only one sentence to him:

“I am not starting over, I am moving forward.”

I turned off the phone.

I hung on the door handle the small copper bell that I had taken in my pocket on that Christmas evening. It swayed slowly in the wind, and a light, clear sound rang through the room.

This time it was not ringing to invite anyone.

It hung in my new home.

And the door opened only for me.

Missed the beginning?
