My husband’s wedding invitation was placed on my desk by his secretary in front of the employees, and then she waited for me with such a smile, as if she had been preparing my humiliation for a long time.
The paper was thick and cream-colored, while the golden letters shone in the office’s cold lights. My husband’s name was written on it. Beside it — Chloe’s name.
My suitcase was still standing by the door. One wheel was wet from the rain. I had returned from Chicago and was expecting only the checking of reports, missed meetings, and the smell of burnt coffee. Instead, the entire marketing department was silent.
“You absolutely must come,” Chloe told me, placing a finger on the invitation. “Alexander and I are getting married next month.”
Her perfume reached me before she herself came closer. She was wearing a white dress, her hair tied in a high ponytail, and she looked at my crumpled travel clothes with such sympathy, as if I had already been defeated.
“You must be very tired,” she added. “But it is truly worth dressing beautifully for this evening.”
I had been Alexander’s wife for almost three years. But no one on this floor knew about it. To everyone, I was simply Catherine — the quiet and reserved employee of the marketing department who seemed to have no personal life.
The marriage had been our agreement. For three years. My father’s transport company was on the verge of bankruptcy, and Alexander invested money on the condition that I become his formal wife before his family. Non-interference in personal life and a peaceful divorce after three years were written into the contract.
But three years had not yet passed.
“Congratulations,” I said.
Chloe’s smile disappeared for a moment.
“I knew you would be happy for us.”
Around us, the sound of keyboards stopped. Someone picked up a cup but forgot to drink. And in Chloe’s eyes it was clearly visible that she was enjoying having an audience.
“Alexander likes a little excitement,” she told me quietly. “A woman who is still retaining her youth.”
I did not get angry. I only put the invitation into my bag.
“So that I do not forget the date,” I said.
Disappointment appeared on her face.
I called my husband. He answered on the third ring.
“You’re back? I need the third-quarter report tomorrow morning.”
I placed my hand on the invitation.
“Are you getting married?”
The silence lasted only two seconds.
“Yes.”
“The divorce has not been finalized yet.”
“The lawyers will take care of that.”
“You signed the agreement yourself, Alexander.”
“Catherine, I do not have time for drama.”
That was when I laughed. For the first time that day.
“Neither do I,” I said and ended the call.
That night I did not return to the penthouse. In a small hotel room, beside the yellow lamp standing next to the bed, I called Robert Sterling — the lawyer who had drafted our agreement.
“You need to check the emergency clauses,” I told him.
“What happened?”
I sent him a photo of the invitation. Then I entered the secure folder. Our contract, Alexander’s letters, and the company incidents that I had collected before leaving for Chicago were stored there.
One folder was named Chloe.
I had hoped I would never open it.
But now I moved the mouse to its icon and opened the file. The first document appeared on the screen, while Robert’s voice suddenly stopped on the phone — as if he had seen something…
Three transfers appeared on the screen. They all came from the same account, but the recipients’ names were different.
“Is this Alexander’s signature?” I asked.
“Yes,” Robert answered. “But look at the approval times.”
The transfers had been made on the days when Alexander was not in the city. Chloe had his electronic key and was sending money in the name of the board of directors.
“Did he know?” I asked.
“We have to prove that. However, there is something more important here.”
He opened the last page of the contract. There, in small letters, it said that Alexander’s new marriage could not take effect while our agreement was in force. In the event of a violation, his controlling rights would temporarily pass to me.
My breath caught.
“Temporarily?”
“Until all financial obligations are checked.”
At that very moment, someone knocked on the door. No one should have come to the hotel corridor.
Robert told me quietly:
“Do not open the door.”
But the handle was already moving. The light beneath the door disappeared, and someone said in a low voice:
“Catherine, I know you opened the file…”
Alexander was standing behind the door. I knew the sound of his breathing, the measure of his steps, and the short pause he always made before beginning a lie.
Robert whispered to me on the phone:
“Do not open it.”
But I turned the lock.
Alexander was not alone. Chloe stood behind him, holding a small leather bag. The confident office smile had disappeared from her face.
“How did you find me?” I asked.
“The hotel was easy to find with your card,” Alexander answered. “You have to give me the documents.”
“Why? So I can hide your second life again?”
Chloe raised her head.
“This is all a misunderstanding.”
Robert said clearly from the phone:
“No, Chloe. This is already a financial investigation.”
Alexander looked at the phone for the first time.
“Robert, do not interfere.”
“I cannot fail to interfere precisely when you are violating my client’s rights.”
I looked at the documents in the folder. There were three transfers, four false approvals, and one audio recording. Alexander’s voice could be heard clearly in the recording.
“Transfer the money. If anyone asks, we will say that Catherine approved it. She will leave soon and will not be able to prove anything.”
The air in the room grew heavy.
Chloe looked at Alexander.
“You said no one would find this.”
“Shut up,” he shouted at her.
“Were you planning to write everything off in my name?” I asked.
Alexander’s face turned pale.
“It was only a temporary transfer.”
“And our marriage?”
He could not answer.
Robert read the last page of the document aloud:
“If the husband enters into another marriage during the period of the active agreement, Catherine immediately receives the controlling voting right and an independent audit begins.”
Chloe dropped the bag on the floor.
“Alexander, you told me that the divorce had already been signed.”
“I did not know that this would have legal significance.”
“You yourself demanded three years,” I told him. “And now you have only two months left.”
At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number. A frightened woman’s voice told me:
“Mrs. Catherine, a board meeting has been scheduled for the morning. By Alexander’s order, you have been forbidden to enter the company building.”
Alexander raised his head and smiled for the first time.
“If you want control, you must have a living board by tomorrow,” he told me.
As soon as the call ended, Robert received another message. He read it, and then his expression changed.
“Catherine, your father’s company’s old account was opened today. Someone transferred all the remaining assets to another country…”
