My sister ruined my son’s birthday, and I answered with one word — by morning, no color remained on her face

My sister’s six-year-old son plunged his bare hands into the birthday cake of my eight-year-old son and shouted: “Now no one will get any!”

Green cream splattered across the white tablecloth. The chocolate tyrannosaurus broke in half, while the candle rolled to the edge of the table. The children gathered in the yard all stopped talking at once.

Max stood frozen.

First his smile disappeared, then his lips began to tremble. He stared at me as if he could not understand why his cousin had destroyed the cake he had dreamed about for three weeks.

And I looked at my sister, Amber.

She was confused for a moment, then gave an awkward little laugh.

“Okay, this came out a little dramatic, didn’t it?” she said.

“Amber, Hunter ruined the cake deliberately,” I answered.

“He is only six years old.”

“Max is also a child.”

Amber shrugged and touched the broken tyrannosaurus with her finger.

“We’ll clean it up. You shouldn’t ruin a party because of things like this.”

Hunter was still laughing. A stripe of green cream remained on his cheek, while Max’s favorite red paper hat lay on the floor.

I did not shout.

I picked Max up and carried him into the house. His body became so heavy in my arms, as if he had transferred all his disappointment onto me.

“Dad, did I do something wrong?” he asked quietly.

My heart clenched.

“No, son. You did nothing wrong.”

In the evening, when the guests had left and the colorful balloons hung motionless beneath the ceiling, the phone chimed. It was a message from Amber.

“You are overreacting. If you behave like this, do not come here anymore.”

I read her words twice. The smell of sweet cream still stood in the kitchen, while plates from the broken cake lay in the sink.

Then I wrote only five words to her:

“Okay. Tomorrow I will remove the house deed.”

The next morning I found thirty-eight missed calls on my phone.

I ignored all of them.

I was sitting with Max in a small diner on Fifth Street. He was silently breaking apart scrambled eggs with a fork, while the waitress added extra whipped cream to his hot chocolate.

“Dad, will Aunt be angry with us now?” he asked.

“Maybe.”

“Then are we bad?”

“No. Sometimes people get angry when they have to take responsibility for their own actions.”

The phone lit up again.

“He is six years old, Cole!”

Then: “I am a single mother and I am trying.”

Then: “Which house deed?”

At that moment I realized that silence was no longer on her side.

Four years earlier, Amber had been living in a car with Hunter. I was a real-estate agent and had a small, one-story house in a good neighborhood, with a fenced yard. I gave her the key and told her to stay there until she got back on her feet.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo golpeó a mi madre y me obligó a elegir; cuando dejé las llaves, su sonrisa desapareció

“A few months,” she promised me.

Three years passed. She did not pay rent, while I covered the repairs, utilities, and property tax. Family helps family — that was what I thought.

But several months earlier I had taken the house out of my company and transferred it into my personal name. Amber did not know this.

That was when Aunt Mel messaged me:

“Children are children, Cole.”

“This was not a misunderstanding,” I said. “Amber laughed and told me I was overreacting.”

“Are you really serious about the house?”

“Are you only interested in the house now for the first time?”

In the evening someone knocked hard on the door. It was Amber. Max appeared frightened in the hallway, while I opened the door slightly.

“Were you planning to open a daycare there without my permission?” I asked.

The color left her face.

“This house is mine as much as you told me I could stay!”

“I told you to stay, not to start a business.”

“Are you throwing your own sister into the street?”

“You have sixty days to find another place.”

She bared her teeth, then raised her hand and stopped her finger near my face.

“You will regret this, Cole.”

The next day, the lawyer Dana placed a folder in the house. She opened the first sheet, stopped the pen between her fingers, and quietly told me:

“Before we respond, you need to see this one document…”

Her hand moved toward the next sheet in the folder…

Dana slowly pulled out the sheet. Its corner was slightly bent, and my house address was written on it.

“This is a city permit application,” she said. “Amber identified herself as the property manager.”

“I did not sign this.”

“That is exactly why it is a problem.”

That same evening Amber came again. This time she held a folded umbrella, and drops of rain fell onto the wooden floor.

“Why did you block the permit?” she shouted.

“Because you were acting in my name.”

“I was improving your house!”

“No. You were building your own business on my property.”

She took out her phone and brought the screen close to my nose.

“I will tell everyone how you treat a struggling family.”

“You can tell them.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“I already dared.”

Amber was silent for several seconds. For the first time I saw not anger in her eyes, but fear.

Dana told me in a low voice that the property records, taxes, and messages were on our side, although there was one thing she could not explain: a signature resembling mine was on the application.

!!!  The husband brought his mistress and newborn to the reading of the inheritance, but his face turned pale at the lawyer’s very first words

“I did not write this signature,” I said.

Dana looked at the sheet.

“Then we need to find out who wrote it and why.”

That night I found an unsigned letter in the mailbox. Inside were only two sentences:

“You do not know everything about Amber. Contact Hunter’s father. He has the truth.”

One name was written below — Daniel.

Amber had forbidden even the mention of this name for seven years.

I picked up the phone and dialed the number written in the letter. The call rang only once.

“Cole?” a tense male voice said. “If you want to know why my sister destroyed you, first you have to understand who Hunter really is…”

“Hunter is my son,” I told Daniel. “What else could this mean?”

“He is not your son,” he answered. “But Amber also did not tell you that I had been alive for seven years.”

It was six o’clock in the morning. The coffee machine hummed in my kitchen, while rain left small, quick trails on the window. Max was still asleep. I held the phone as if letting it go would end the conversation forever.

“Where have you been all this time?” I asked.

“Not in prison. I was working abroad. Amber told me that I did not want to see Hunter and that contact with me was forbidden by court order. That was a lie.”

“Why would she hide your existence?”

Daniel exhaled.

“For money. At first I sent help. Then she told me that you were raising the child and had a house in your name. Last year she asked me to transfer my share to Hunter. I refused. After that she stopped answering me.”

That same day Dana, Daniel, and I met in her office. On the table lay a folder, a memory card, and an expert’s report. The sharp smell of lemon cleaning product filled the room.

Dana played the recording.

Amber’s voice was heard.

“Cole will give in eventually anyway. If not, I will tell everyone that he is throwing the child into the street. People will force him to transfer the house to me.”

A second voice, a woman’s, asked:

“And if he does not give in?”

“Then I will make his signature. I have already done it on the application. He is too kind to suspect anything.”

The recording stopped.

I could not say anything. Dana placed the signature expert’s report in front of me.

“The signature on the application is forged,” she said. “Together with the taxes, owner records, and your messages, her lawsuit is now not merely weak, but evidence against her.”

!!!  My Breakup Message Reached the Most Dangerous Man in the City, but When He Saw My Necklace, His Face Changed

Daniel lowered his head.

“I should have brought Hunter years ago.”

“You did not know,” I told him.

“Now I know.”

That evening Amber called me. Her voice was no longer shouting.

“Was Daniel with you?”

“Yes.”

“He does not know what he is doing. Hunter does not need a father.”

“That is already Hunter’s decision.”

“If you take the house from me, I will do everything.”

“You have already done it.”

A heavy silence fell at the other end of the line.

Then Dana told me that a new message had arrived from the city: besides the daycare permit for the house address, a preliminary loan application had also been submitted to the bank. My property was listed as collateral in it.

I did not call Amber.

Dana contacted the police, while Daniel took another small card from his pocket.

“This came to me this morning,” he said. “Amber writes that if I do not keep quiet by tomorrow, I will never see Hunter again.”

At that moment my phone rang. An unknown number was on the screen.

“Cole?” a man said. “I am calling from the bank. The documents for the sale of your house have already been received, and a meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow morning to confirm the signature…”

Then I realized that Amber was not acting alone…
