Part 4 — My sister ruined my son’s birthday, and I answered with one word — by morning, no color remained on her face

The bank employee’s voice continued for several seconds, but I heard only one phrase.

“The sale documents have already been received.”

“I did not send these documents,” I told him.

“That is exactly why we contacted you. The meeting is at ten in the morning. If you do not appear, the application will move to the next stage after review.”

“I will definitely come.”

I hung up.

Dana immediately closed her bag.

“Today we will contact the police and request a temporary court prohibition.”

Daniel stood by the window. His face was tense.

“Hunter is with Amber,” he said. “If she realizes that everything is over, she may disappear with the child.”

“First I will pick Max up from school,” I said.

“Cole, we do not have time.”

“I have to pick up my son from school.”

Dana looked at me and nodded.

That day, for the first time, I felt that I was controlling fear, and not the other way around.

In the school hallway Max was looking at the drawings attached to the wall. One showed a small green dinosaur with a red paper hat on its head.

“This is our cake,” he told me.

“I know.”

“Does Aunt not love me anymore?”

“Sometimes adults make bad decisions. It is not your fault.”

He took my hand.

That same evening Amber’s calls increased. First she called me, then Dana, and finally my business partner Luke.

“Tell him that I only want to talk,” Amber told Luke.

Luke ended the call and looked at me.

“I will not interfere, but she said that you would lose everything.”

“She has already tried to do that.”

At nine o’clock at night Amber left a voice message.

Her voice was trembling.

“Cole, maybe we should meet. You do not want to take the house away. You are my brother. Everything can be settled.”

Dana shook her head.

“Do not answer.”

I saved the message.

The next morning we arrived at the bank. A small wooden stamp lay on the table, and beside it was a stack of documents. The bank manager placed each sheet in front of us.

!!!  Dije que Mara era mi esposa delante de todos, pero su respuesta convirtió la broma en algo que me dejó sin palabras

“There is an application here in your name,” he said.

“This is not my signature.”

Dana handed over the expert’s report. The police officer who came with her photographed every page.

A few minutes later Amber also entered. She was wearing a black jacket, and in her hand she held Hunter’s small plastic car. She was probably turning it between her fingers because she was nervous.

“Cole, please, do not do this,” she said.

“I am not doing anything. You were doing it.”

“I only wanted a safe future.”

“By forging my signature?”

She chose silence.

Daniel stood in front of her.

“For seven years you told me that I did not want contact with Hunter.”

The car fell from Amber’s hand.

“You should not be here.”

“He is my son.”

“You remembered that now?”

“No. You hid him from me.”

Hunter had not been with Amber that day. Daniel had left him with a neighbor because Amber had been running around to the bank since morning. When the boy was brought into the room, Daniel knelt down.

“Hello, Hunter.”

The child approached carefully.

“Are you Dad?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“If you want me to be.”

Amber sat down against the wall. For the first time she was no longer trying to win.

The police officer calmly told her that the forged signature, false application, and attempt to illegally encumber the property would be transferred for investigation. Dana obtained a temporary court prohibition. Amber’s lawsuit was dismissed several weeks later because the documents and recording refuted her statements.

Amber came to me in the courthouse hallway.

“Did you really want to throw me out?”

“I gave you sixty days.”

“But this was my house too.”

“No, Amber. This was help that you turned into an obligation.”

She lowered her eyes.

That same week I emptied the small house. Traces of children’s drawings remained on the walls in the living room. On the kitchen shelf I found one thing — the red paper hat that had been lying on the floor on the day of Max’s cake.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Vi a un hombre enorme llevarse la silla de una anciana llorando, pero cuando ella me detuvo, mi mano empezó a temblar

I picked it up.

A dried stain of green cream was still visible on the edge of the hat.

I stood for a long time in the empty room.

Only then did I realize how long I had been trying to protect Amber at the expense of myself, my son, and the truth.

Three weeks later Amber moved out of the house. The court imposed a supervision plan on her for Hunter’s safety, while Daniel began regular meetings with his son. I did not ask for revenge against her.

I only wanted no one to be able to use my house, my name, or my son anymore.

Two months later I opened a small office in a new city. A river could be seen from the window. In the mornings I answered clients’ calls, and in the evenings I cooked dinner with Max.

Max acquired a new habit.

On every birthday, before cutting the cake, he first handed out plates to everyone.

“This way no one can ruin it,” he would say.

And I would answer:

“Now you choose whom you will share it with.”

The first snow came at the beginning of December. Max stood by the window and drew a small dinosaur on the glass with his finger. A red paper hat lay on the table beside him.

That evening I received Amber’s last message.

“Can I come back home? Hunter misses the old yard. You know that family is still family.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I sent only one answer.

“Hunter has a father now. And you can build a new life. You will not return to my house.”

She did not answer me again.

Daniel and Hunter met on Sundays. At first the boy was quiet, but after several months they rode bicycles together. Once Hunter called me.

“Cole, can you come too?”

“Of course.”

“You are not my father, but you are still my family.”

!!!  Mein verschwundener Sohn erschien im Fenster des gelben Hauses, doch als ich die Nachbarn zur Rede stellte, verlor jemand die Farbe

I could not answer. I only went to the window and looked at the snow.

Max called to me from the room:

“Dad, where should we put the hat?”

I took the red paper hat in my hand. The green stain had almost disappeared, but not completely.

We attached it to the door of the new house, on a small nail.

From that day on, whenever I entered the house, it was the first thing I saw.

Not as a memory of that destructive party.

But as a sign that sometimes family is not the one who was born into your life.

Family is the one who stands beside you when your child is crying.

And a door that was once closed for the truth should no longer be opened for wrongdoing.

The paper hat did not disappear in the snow.

I no longer saved anyone at the cost of my own peace.

Missed the beginning?
