Part 4 — By my daughter-in-law’s order, I was thrown out of my grandson’s birthday, but when security received one call, her smile began to disappear

Elena ended the call and leaned against the car door.

“What does the second signature mean?” I asked.

“I do not know yet,” she answered. “But the document has already been taken from the archive. This means only one thing: someone inside helped too.”

Jason immediately called Amber.

She did not answer the first call.

On the second, her voice sounded.

“I am busy now.”

“Where is my mother’s document?” Jason asked.

Silence fell on the other side.

“What document are you talking about?”

“The one you tried to forge.”

Amber tried to laugh, but the laughter caught in her throat.

“Jason, I advise you not to interfere in your mother’s drama anymore.”

Elena held out her hand.

“Give me the phone.”

Jason turned on the speaker.

“Mrs. Amber, I am Dorothy Morgan’s lawyer,” Elena said. “From this moment we are documenting all your actions. Any transfer connected with the lake house is suspended.”

“You cannot frighten me,” Amber replied.

“This is not fear. It is a warning.”

Amber hung up.

One minute later a message arrived on Jason’s phone.

“If you trust your mother, you will lose your family forever.”

Jason looked at the screen and for the first time did not try to justify Amber.

“I will take the recording to the police myself,” he said.

“Not yet,” Elena stopped him. “First she must think that she still controls the situation.”

That same evening we arrived at my house. A small paper plate bought for Luka’s birthday cake still lay on the kitchen table. Chocolate cream had dried on it. This insignificant detail struck my heart as if the whole day were still standing there, by the gate.

Elena questioned me.

“Do you have samples of your signature?”

“At the bank, in old documents, and in a letter that I wrote to my husband.”

I opened the cabinet and took down a small wooden box from the top shelf. I kept important family things there: the marriage certificate, Jason’s school photograph, the small box containing Luka’s first tooth.

Under the photographs lay a letter addressed to my husband.

Elena signed a copy and nodded.

“It is enough for comparison.”

The next morning we went to the police.

Amber was already waiting for us there.

She wore a cream-colored suit and held the same leather bag in her hand. It was as if she had come for an ordinary matter, not under accusations of a forged document and attempted appropriation of property.

!!!  Part 4 — I Fell Powerlessly to the Ground with Three Children, but When the Ranch Owner Saw the Medallion, the Color Drained from His Face

“Dorothy, did you really have to take it this far?” she asked me.

“You brought it this far.”

“I was only thinking about the family’s future.”

“The family’s future, or your own debts?”

Her jaw tightened.

“Jason made you believe everything.”

Jason stood beside me.

“No, Amber. You told me everything yourself. You simply did not know that you were being recorded.”

The color drained from Amber’s face.

“This is illegal.”

Elena answered calmly:

“The recording was not made in your home. It was recorded by the person to whom you gave the assignment. We also have his testimony.”

Amber stepped back.

The security guard took the bag from her. Inside they found the old document, copies of identity documents, and a copy of the notary’s seal.

For the first time I saw how she lost control of her own body.

Her fingers were trembling.

That same week the court placed a lien on the lake house. Amber’s business account was frozen. The notary’s employee admitted that he had processed the document in exchange for a monetary promise. A case was opened against Amber for forgery, fraud, and attempted unlawful appropriation of property.

I did not smile at a single hearing.

This was not a victory.

It was the end of fatigue accumulated over many years.

A month later Amber called me once more.

“Dorothy, please withdraw the complaint,” she told me. “Everything can be fixed.”

“No, Amber.”

“Jason cannot raise us alone.”

“Now it no longer depends on you who raises whom.”

“Luka needs a father.”

“Luka has a father. He only needs the truth.”

Amber fell silent.

“You destroyed the family,” she said at last.

“No. I simply stopped holding up the wall that you yourself were destroying.”

The case ended several months later. The notary’s license was revoked. Amber admitted her guilt in court because the evidence was so strong that denial made no sense. She was given a suspended sentence, a large fine, and ordered to compensate the damage.

Jason and Amber separated.

One evening Jason came to my house. In his hand he held a small photograph taken from Luka’s room. In the photograph Luka stood by the lake, a boat visible behind him, and he wore that blue paper hat on his head.

!!!  Meine Frau wies mich nachts ab, doch ihr Telefonat ließ meinen Bruder plötzlich verstummen

“The room is empty,” Jason told me. “Amber left. She left only this photograph on the bed.”

“How is Luka?”

“Every night he asks whether you still love him.”

My heart contracted.

“Tell him that none of the gates stopped my love.”

The following week Luka stayed with me.

On the first night he lay in bed and looked at the ceiling.

“Grandma, did Mom throw you out because she does not love me anymore?”

“No, darling. Sometimes adults present their own fears as love. But this is never your fault.”

“Will you still leave the lake house to me?”

“Not the lake house,” I answered, “I will leave you the right to choose. When you grow up, you will decide what you want to do there.”

He thought for a long time.

“Then let us make a wooden boat there.”

“Let us.”

Three months passed.

At the lake house I cleaned the windows, painted the old shelves, and placed a small desk in the living room. Four days a week I worked in the financial department of my company in the city, which I had created years earlier and of which I was actually the owner. That was precisely why I could never have imagined that Amber would steal money from me as if I were a helpless widow.

I was a millionaire, but I had never told Amber that.

Money had never been the reason why I helped the family. That was why she did not understand that my calm was not poverty.

Luka came to me every Saturday. Together we built a small wooden boat. He drew, while I fastened the boards. His drawings hung on the refrigerator: a lake, a house, three people, and a large yellow sun.

One day a fourth person appeared in the drawing.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Dad. Now he comes to us too.”

Jason really did come. He attended therapy, went to Luka’s school meetings, and for the first time in years asked his mother directly what she felt.

I no longer tried to manage his life.

I simply stood beside him.

On the first day of winter, snow came. Luka went out into the yard holding the completed frame of the wooden boat. He also had the album with him. With the same red cover with which everything had begun.

!!!  I pushed my way between eight doctors to save a billionaire’s son, and when I pointed at his neck, one of them lost color

The copper charm shaped like a pier still hung from it.

“Grandma, shall we leave this here?” he asked me.

“Where?”

“On the boat. So that everyone knows where our journey began.”

I wanted to say that all this had begun with pain, but I should not pass the inheritance of pain to a child.

“All right,” I told him. “Let it be there.”

That evening I received Amber’s last message.

“One day you will understand that family was only me and Jason. Leave me the right to return, at least.”

I held the telephone in my hand for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“The door for returning is not closed. But the house in which you lied to me no longer exists.”

I wrote nothing more.

I put the telephone aside and went to the window.

Snow was slowly falling onto the lake. The wooden boat stood on the veranda, and on its bow a small copper charm was ringing lightly in the wind.

For the first time I no longer heard danger in that sound.

Only freedom.

Luka called to me from the room:

“Grandma, are we going to the lake tomorrow?”

I smiled.

“Tomorrow too, and whenever you want.”

The boat’s charm rang again.

This time I did not close the door.

Missed the beginning?
