On the night before the wedding, my fiancé called me and said that he would no longer come to the rehearsal with me because his “best friend” could not bear staying alone in a hotel room.
I was standing in the hotel’s large hall, where white roses, candles, and tables set for three hundred guests were waiting for the next day’s celebration. The musicians had stopped playing. The coordinator was holding two wedding rings in his hands.
“Mrs. Valentina, shall we walk down the aisle alone?” he asked carefully.
“Yes, let’s walk.”
My voice was so calm that I did not recognize it myself.
Three weeks earlier, Sebastian and I had already registered a civil marriage. His family insisted that property matters had to be settled in advance. Tomorrow’s ceremony was supposed to be only a large celebration.
At that moment I thought for the first time that perhaps this celebration was actually a trap.
I called Sebastian twelve times. He answered on the sixth call.
“Valentina, I can’t talk now. Camila is unwell. She is having trouble breathing and I can’t leave her alone.”
Camila Robles had been his friend since school. For three years she always appeared whenever our relationship had its most important day. Our anniversary? Camila broke up with her boyfriend that day. We bought a new apartment? Camila needed a place to sleep for several days. My birthday? Her dog had fallen ill.
Every time Sebastian told me the same thing.
“Don’t be jealous. She is like family.”
That night, after ten forty, I entered the bridal suite and picked up my phone. Camila had posted a new photo. She was sitting on the hotel bed, wearing Sebastian’s black wedding jacket, and there were two cups beside her.
I noticed on Camila’s wrist the watch I had bought as a wedding gift for Sebastian. Our initials were engraved on the back.
Under the photo it said: “Thank you for always remembering what I am afraid of.”
My body froze. I did not cry. I took a screenshot and saved the picture in a separate folder.
Then I called my financial director, Esteban.
“Stop tomorrow’s transfer.”
“What happened?” he asked.
“Sebastian is at a hotel with another woman.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am sure that he is not with me. For now, that is enough.”
At nine in the morning, fifty million pesos were supposed to be transferred to his family’s real-estate fund. They supposedly used the money for a joint project, but the contract clearly stated: if the conditions changed, the transfer was to be stopped.
Five minutes later Sebastian called me.
“Don’t make this into a bigger deal than it is.”
“You are at a hotel with another woman.”
“She was having a panic attack.”
“Did the watch I gave you also have a panic attack?”
The line fell silent for several seconds.
“I lent it to her. Tomorrow Camila is supposed to talk to you. Then she will come to the wedding too.”
“To our main table?”
“My mother said she shouldn’t feel excluded.”
Then I understood that this was no longer simple betrayal. They were testing how much I could endure before I handed my money over to them.
“Fine,” I said.
“I knew you would be reasonable.”
They had used the word “reasonable” so many times that it already sounded like an insult.
At four in the morning I received a message from the hotel: Sebastian’s mother was asking to let Camila into the family suite and add a place for her at the main table.
I did not reply.
At seven fifty-five in the morning, instead of the white dress I put on a black suit. I placed my civil-marriage ring in a small wooden box and went to my father’s house.
At eight twenty-seven a car stopped at the gate. Sebastian got out first. Then he opened Camila’s door and put his own jacket over her shoulders.
They were coming toward me.
They did not yet know that they would find the gate locked. Nor did they know that the fifty million was no longer moving.
But the most important thing was still ahead. His mother got out of the car, holding a thin leather folder, and walked straight toward the gate. When my father removed the lock, she opened the folder and placed her hand on the first page…
The folder was in Sebastian’s mother Adriana’s hands, but before she said the first word, my father opened the gate completely.
“Valentina, what kind of childish performance is this?” Adriana asked.
She always spoke as if every room belonged to her. That morning, however, her diamond earrings were trembling.
“This is my house,” I answered. “You are the ones putting on a performance here.”
Sebastian stepped in front of Camila.
“She simply misunderstood everything.”
“Then explain why your friend is wearing your jacket and my gift?”
Camila lowered her head. The pink polish on her fingers had peeled. For the first time she no longer looked like the self-confident woman sitting on the bed in the photo.
“I was feeling very bad,” she whispered.
“Does feeling bad require two cups in a hotel and my fiancé’s watch?”
Sebastian raised his voice.
“Enough! I will not let you humiliate my friend before tomorrow’s wedding.”
My father took a step forward.
“There will be no wedding tomorrow if my daughter decides so.”
Adriana immediately opened the folder.
“That is exactly why I came. Here is the amended agreement. If Valentina refuses to continue the wedding, the project financing will be considered breached and the family will have to pay a penalty.”
Esteban, who was standing behind her, smiled calmly.
“Mrs. Adriana, the transfer has not yet been completed. You can discuss a penalty only after receiving the money.”
“You are a lawyer, not a judge.”
“But I read the contract. You, apparently, did not.”
For the first time, real fear appeared on Adriana’s face.
I took the folder from her hand. The paper smelled of lavender, the same scent that was always in their family office. On the third page a new insert was attached, bearing a mark resembling my signature.
“This is not my signature,” I said.
Sebastian looked away.
“It is just a technical addition.”
“A technical addition that transfers my house, my shares, and my family’s guarantees to your fund?”
Camila suddenly looked at me.
“I did not know it would go this far.”
Sebastian turned toward her.
“Shut up, Camila.”
Those two words said more than all his explanations.
The clock in my father’s house struck nine. That was exactly when the money was supposed to be released. Esteban’s phone rang.
“The transfer has officially been stopped,” he said.
Sebastian threw the phone at the wall. The screen shattered on the floor.
“You can’t do this!” he shouted at me. “You are already my wife!”
“I am your wife, but not your family’s wallet.”
Adriana clenched her teeth.
“Valentina, think. Three hundred people have already been invited. The whole city will hear that you ruined the wedding.”
“The whole city will also hear that you wanted my money as the price of the wedding.”
At that moment Camila’s phone lit up. The message was from a name that appeared on the screen for a moment: “Mario — Lawyer.”
Camila quickly hid the phone.
“Who is Mario?” I asked.
“No one,” Sebastian said.
But Camila’s face turned pale.
At that same moment my father’s security guard ran in.
“Mrs. Valentina, another car has arrived from the hotel. Two men are sitting in it and say they are authorized to meet with you.”
Esteban took the folder from me and looked through the last pages.
“Something is wrong here,” he said. “This document was created last night, but the signature time is listed as six in the morning.”
“I was at home at six,” I said.
“That is exactly why you should see what is stored on this small memory card.”
He took a black card from the folder’s back pocket.
Sebastian looked at it and lost the color in his face.
“Where did you find that?” he asked.
Esteban opened the computer. Everyone in the room fell silent. An audio-recording file appeared on the screen and a timestamp lit up.
The sound began.
The first voice was Sebastian’s. The second was Adriana’s.
But in the recording a third person was saying words that made Camila demand with a scream that it be turned off…
“Turn it off!” Camila was screaming, but the recording was already being heard throughout the living room.
Sebastian’s voice was calm and cold.
“Valentina will not back down on the wedding day. She is afraid of shame. As soon as the money enters the fund, we will transfer it to another account.”
Adriana asked:
“And if she becomes suspicious?”
“Camila will start crying. We will tell everyone that Valentina is jealous and cruel. In the end she will apologize anyway.”
Camila’s voice was heard in the recording.
“I do not want her to look cruel. I just need to be sure that Sebastian will stay with me.”
Silence covered the room as if the windows had all closed at once.
Camila collapsed into a chair. Her fingers with pink polish lay on her knees.
“That was not the whole conversation,” she said. “I was just afraid.”
“I was afraid,” Sebastian repeated, but this time his voice deceived no one.
In the recording Adriana asked:
“What if the marriage is annulled?”
“The civil marriage will not be annulled,” Sebastian answered. “That is why we need the money first. Then I will convince Valentina that everything is her fault.”
My father lowered his eyes. I knew that for him this was no longer only financial fraud. He was also hearing the silence of the child who was not born to me.
And I was looking at Sebastian.
“Do you have anything else to say?”
He moved his lips, but could not find a word.
“Did you ever love me?” I asked.
“Valentina…”
“Answer me.”
Camila began to cry.
“He loved the life that your money gave him.”
Sebastian turned toward her.
“You be quiet!”
“I covered up your lies for three years,” Camila said. “I thought that in the end you would choose me.”
Adriana raised her hand.
“This is a family matter. No one has the right to blackmail us with this recording.”
Esteban answered calmly:
“This is not blackmail. It is evidence. The recording is secured; copies have already been sent to the notary, the bank, and the investigative agency.”
Sebastian lunged toward me.
“You planned all of this in advance?”
“No. You planned it. I only decided to listen.”
He took the small wooden box from the table, in which my civil-marriage ring lay.
“You cannot take this away from me.”
“This ring is a sign of my marriage, not your right over me.”
The doorbell rang.
The security guard opened the door. Outside stood two investigators and a notary. They had official documents in their hands, but had not entered yet.
Sebastian looked at Adriana.
“Mother, tell her this is a misunderstanding.”
For the first time Adriana could say nothing.
Camila’s phone rang again. This time she answered. Within seconds her face changed.
“What happened?” I asked.
She slowly lowered the phone.
“Mario said that the police sealed the hotel room. But they found another recording there.”
Esteban looked at her.
“What kind of recording?”
Camila looked at Sebastian. For the first time I saw in her eyes not love, but fear.
“A video showing who entered the room before me and who brought the documents.”
Sebastian stepped back.
“Camila, don’t you dare.”
“I am not doing anything anymore,” she said. “Now the truth is doing it.”
The investigators entered the house. One of them told Sebastian that they had several questions for him. No one had been arrested yet, and no decision had been issued, but Sebastian immediately understood: this time he would not be able to convince anyone with money.
I was standing by the window, holding my wedding box, when Esteban’s phone made the sound of a message.
He looked at the screen and fell silent.
“What is it?” I asked.
“The bank has discovered a new account where several attempts have already been made to transfer money using your signature.”
“In whose name is the account?”
Esteban turned toward me.
“It is in your name, Valentina. But you never opened that account.”
At that moment I realized that canceling the wedding was only the beginning. While they were taking my money, someone had created an entirely different life in my name…
