Part 4 — On Christmas morning, my parents threw us out of the house, but when my mother heard my calm call, her smile immediately disappeared

After the bank employee’s last words, silence descended in the room.

“What document?” I asked.

“I cannot explain it over the phone. Please come immediately.”

My mother tried to stand up, but the chair scraped across the floor and she sat down again.

Bella leaned against the wall.

“Jessica, don’t go.”

“Now I have to go there.”

Lauren left with me. Outside, the rain grew stronger. On the university steps I heard Bella’s voice.

“Please, don’t do this to the family!”

I did not look back.

At the bank, the manager, Mr. Hayes, brought us into a small room. Several sheets of paper lay on the table, and beside them was a flash drive with a blue cap.

“This concerns the mortgage account for the house,” he told me. “Your parents had difficulty covering the loan. Several months ago they requested a deferment and additional funds.”

“I knew nothing about this.”

“You are a co-borrower. The documents state that you gave your consent.”

I picked up the sheet.

The signature again looked like mine, but again it was not mine. The last letter descended downward.

“This is forged too.”

Mr. Hayes connected the flash drive to the computer.

“We also checked the communication records. Your parents claimed that you lived at home, shared expenses, and had agreed to the additional loan as well. However, one of the bank employees recorded their conversation because your consent could not be confirmed.”

An audio-recording file appeared on the screen.

Mr. Hayes pressed play.

First my mother’s voice was heard.

“Jessica will sign anyway. She does not have the heart to leave Bella like that.”

Then my father’s hoarse voice:

“The house is tied to her name too. If she refuses, she will lose everything herself.”

My mother chuckled.

“Let’s go to Hawaii before Christmas. When you return, she will already be broken and will sign.”

The recording stopped.

I was looking at the screen. Lauren put her hand on mine. I could not cry. That was the strangest thing. It was as if something inside me had already ended that morning, when I found the letter.

!!!  Mi esposo encerró a mi hija herida para proteger a su amante, pero al llegar al banquete alguien dejó de sonreír

Mr. Hayes turned off the sound.

“We suspended the account and transferred the matter to the legal department. You did not sign these documents, so liability will not pass to you. However, an investigation will begin.”

“The house?”

“If you wish, it is possible to cancel your co-borrower status, but your parents will remain obligated to make the payments.”

I lowered my eyes.

“Cancel it.”

When I left the bank, I found twenty-one calls on my phone. My mother, my father, Bella, unknown numbers. I answered none of them.

When I got home in the evening, Grace was sitting on the floor and drawing a square house on a colored sheet of paper.

“This is our new house,” she told me. “Here Grandma will no longer write to us that we should leave.”

I knelt down.

“No one will decide for us anymore where we will be.”

That same night my mother sent a voice message.

At first she was crying. Then she was angry. Finally she said quietly:

“Jessica, if you use this recording, your father’s heart will not withstand it. You cannot do this.”

For the first time, her threat no longer hurt me.

The next day I called a lawyer. He examined all the documents and told me that the forged signature at the university and the papers connected with the house loan had the same electronic trace.

“This is important evidence,” he told me.

“I simply want to no longer be part of all this.”

“For that, you need to tell the whole truth.”

I agreed.

Two weeks later my parents went to the investigation office. I was there, and Lauren was sitting beside me. The clock on the wall counted the seconds noisily.

The investigator played the recording from the beginning.

When my mother heard her own voice, she lowered her head.

“Jessica will sign anyway. She does not have the heart…”

!!!  Mi suegra ocupó mi cocina y anunció que no pensaba marcharse, pero la llamada que escuché a medianoche hizo que mi esposo palideciera

She covered her ears with her hands.

“Enough.”

“That is your voice,” the investigator said.

“I know.”

My father was standing by the window. His hands were trembling.

“We only wanted help.”

For the first time, I looked directly at him.

“Help begins with asking. Control begins with deception.”

Bella was not there. Later I learned that the university considered her case separately. She temporarily stopped her studies, but she was not arrested. With the help of lawyers, my mother and father took responsibility for the forged documents, reached an agreement with the bank, changed the house payment plan, and paid the remaining cost of the Hawaii trip themselves.

I did not ask for them to be punished.

I simply stopped doing anything in their place.

Three months later, our apartment already looked like a home. In the morning Grace went to school, while I worked as an administrator at a nearby library. The railway tracks were visible from the window, but the sound of trains no longer frightened me. It became the sound of everyday life.

Grace hung her drawing on the wall. It was a square house, with two windows and a small yellow door.

“Mom, is it really our place now?”

“Yes.”

“Because our names are here?”

“Because here we choose.”

The first snow came at the beginning of March. We were baking cinnamon buns in the kitchen. Grace had dough smeared on her nose, and I hung her red hat over the back of a chair.

That evening Bella wrote to me.

“Forgive me. Mom and Dad say that everything happened because of you. But now I understand that your money was not love if I was constantly waiting for it. Maybe you will talk to me someday?”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I will talk to you one day, when this conversation is not a request for help but an acceptance of responsibility. I am not ready for that now.”

!!!  Llegué a una mansión para cuidar a dos gemelos enfermos, pero al detenerme frente a sus habitaciones alguien dejó de respirar

Bella did not answer me again.

A week later my parents sent me my things. In the box were Grace’s old drawings, several books, and the small wooden deer figure. One of its antlers was broken on one side. I had put it in the backpack on Christmas morning, when we left the house.

I placed the figure on the shelf, beside our yellow door.

My mother sent her final message that same evening.

“The house is empty again. If you want, come back. Everything will no longer be the same.”

I looked at the snow through the window. Then I calmly wrote:

“I know. That is why I will not come back.”

I turned off the phone.

Grace came into the living room and pointed toward the wooden deer.

“Mom, shall we hang it on the Christmas tree again this year?”

“Of course.”

I picked up the little deer. I ran my finger over its broken antler, and for the first time I did not feel that a broken thing meant misfortune.

Sometimes it simply means that you survived.

Our door glowed yellow.

And this time no one was throwing us out.

Missed the beginning?
