At My Pregnant Sister’s Funeral, Jason Came with Another Woman, but the Lawyer’s First Words in the Church Left Everyone Frozen

That day, when Jason came arm in arm with another woman to my pregnant sister’s funeral, I realized that something was terribly wrong with Lily’s death.

In the church of a small Texas town, white lilies stood with a heavy fragrance. The coffin was closed. Inside lay my sister, Lily—or so we all believed. She was thirty-two weeks pregnant and had already been talking to the boy she would name Noah.

Jason appeared in a black suit. There was grief on his face, but his eyes were too calm. Beside him stood a tall brunette woman in a black, tight-fitting dress. I recognized Rachel immediately. I had once seen her name in Lily’s phone.

Mother squeezed my hand so hard that her fingernails dug into my skin.

“Emily, don’t you dare,” Father said quietly to me. “Not now.”

“Then when?” I answered through my teeth. “When that woman sits in Lily’s place?”

Jason led Rachel to the front row. There, where family members were supposed to sit. The woman rested her head on his shoulder and lowered her eyes, as if the role of the widow belonged to her.

The pastor spoke about Lily’s laughter, kindness, and the not-yet-born Noah. I, however, watched Jason. Three weeks had passed since the night when Lily was found on the stairs. Jason said that her foot slipped and that no one could have prevented the fall.

But Lily had a dark mark on her left wrist. I saw it in the hospital before the doctors sent me out of the room. When a person falls down stairs, they do not hold a hand like that. That is how they hold you.

After the final hymn, people slowly stood up. Then a man in a gray suit approached the altar. In his hand he held a dark-brown leather bag, on whose clasp a small brass eye gleamed.

“I am Daniel Hayes, Lily Reed’s lawyer,” he said.

Jason immediately stepped forward.

“This is not the time for this.”

“Today is exactly the time, Mr. Reed,” Daniel answered calmly.

“Lily is already waiting for burial.”

“Lily had clear instructions. The will was to be opened today, in this church, and in the presence of all those close to her.”

Rachel grasped Jason’s arm more tightly. For the first time I noticed that her fingers were trembling.

Daniel took a thick folder from the bag. It had a blue cover, and in the corner was one word written in Lily’s hand: “Truth.”

“There is a separate section here that Lily asked me to read aloud on the day of her funeral,” he said.

Jason’s face darkened in one second.

“You will not do this.”

“I am already doing it.”

Such silence fell over the church that I heard the ticking of the wall clock. Daniel lifted the first sheet, stopped his fingers on Lily’s handwriting, and said:

“‘If my death seems like an accident to you, Emily, please trust no one at first…’”

My breath caught. Daniel’s hand moved toward the inner pocket of the folder and reached to take out a small sealed envelope…

Daniel’s fingers touched the envelope, but Jason stepped in front of him.

“You cannot open that,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because this is my wife’s funeral.”

“No,” I answered. “Because you are afraid.”

Rachel looked at me for the first time.

“Emily, your sister was ill. Jealousy clouded your mind.”

“My sister died. And you are standing with her husband at her funeral.”

Daniel signaled to the security guard. Jason stepped back, but he did not take his eyes off the envelope. The lawyer slowly broke the seal and took a small memory card out of it.

“Lily left this with me two days before her death,” he said. “She instructed me to use it only if the matter connected with her was declared an accident.”

A cold shiver ran down my back.

“Is her voice on it?” I asked.

Daniel nodded.

“Her voice, and one more thing that proves to Jason that Lily knew everything.”

Jason suddenly took out his mobile phone.

“I will call the police.”

“The police already know that we are here,” Daniel replied.

At these words Rachel released Jason’s arm. And he looked at her with fear for the first time.

Daniel turned on the device. A woman’s hoarse but firm voice sounded in the church.

“If you are listening to this, it means that I can no longer speak to you. But you have not yet asked the main question: To whom did Jason entrust our child that night?…”

Lily’s voice sounded from Daniel’s device, and every person in the church froze at the same time.

“If you are listening to this, it means that I can no longer speak to you. But you have not yet asked the main question: To whom did Jason entrust our child that night?”

Jason shook his head.

“This is edited.”

“You will hear it yourself,” Daniel said.

For several seconds, only breathing could be heard in the recording. Then Lily continued:

“Emily, I know Jason will say that I fell down the stairs. But two days earlier he told me that having the baby interfered with his plans. He was preparing a new life with Rachel. And I found a document that showed me why Noah’s birth was dangerous for him.”

Mother covered her mouth with her hand. Father leaned against a chair.

Jason grabbed Daniel, but the security guard stopped him immediately.

“One more step and you will leave here in handcuffs,” he told him.

Rachel turned pale.

“Jason, tell me this is a lie.”

“You know nothing,” he shouted at her.

“Then why are you afraid?”

Daniel took a second sheet from the folder.

“Lily changed the beneficiary of the life-insurance policy. The money no longer belongs to Jason. It was transferred into the child’s name, and Emily was appointed guardian.”

Jason froze.

“The child died,” he said.

“That is exactly where you are wrong,” I answered.

Everyone turned toward me.

Daniel opened a small transparent packet. Inside lay a hospital bracelet on which was written: “Newborn boy, mother—Lily Reed.”

“Noah was born alive that night,” he said. “Lily died in the hospital before he could be saved. The doctor moved the baby to a secret ward because Lily had requested protection in advance.”

My knees gave way.

“Is my nephew alive?”

“He is alive. And he is in the Austin Children’s Clinic, under protection.”

Mother cried out loudly. Father lowered his eyes. Rachel looked Jason in the face as if she were seeing him for the first time.

“You told me the baby had died,” she whispered.

Jason could not answer.

The recording continued again.

“Emily, Daniel has the doctor’s letter and a copy of the stair-camera footage. It shows that someone was standing behind me before the fall. But there is one more thing they do not know: immediately after Noah’s birth, I sent a letter to the person Jason expects the least.”

Daniel turned off the recording.

“To whom?” I asked.

He looked at the phone. A new message appeared on the screen. The color drained from Daniel’s face.

“We have just received the letter,” he said. “The person appointed by Lily is already in town. And he has with him the complete recording of that night…”
