Part 4 — Before his death, my husband sent me to a strange woman, but when I heard her first question, the color drained from his face

The woman slowly moved toward the clinic entrance, holding the yellow ceramic bird in both hands. At that moment I did not understand why this object was the first thing I remembered. Probably because twenty-one years ago Demian took a small yellow bird from a shelf in our house and told me it had been left by the family of an old patient.

At the time I asked no questions.

Now everything connected.

“Marina, open the door!” Levan was still shouting from the corridor.

Ayla said quietly to me:

“Do not read the third sheet here. Speak to that woman first.”

“Who is she?”

Ayla looked into my eyes.

“My daughter.”

They struck the door once more. Nodari opened the rear exit, and the three of us went down a narrow staircase. It was no longer raining in the yard, but puddles on the concrete bent the lamplight.

The woman stood beside the car. She was about twenty-one. She had the same dark eyes as Ayla, but an unusual calm was written on her face.

“Mother,” she said.

Ayla ran toward her and embraced her as if she had suddenly exhaled the breath she had held for years.

I froze in place.

“This is Marina,” Ayla told her.

The woman looked toward me.

“Demian’s wife.”

“I know,” she answered. “He told me many things about you.”

There was neither hatred nor anger in her voice. That was more painful.

“You survived,” I said.

“Yes. But another person lived under my name.”

At the same time Levan rushed into the yard, and two men came behind him. He saw me and stopped immediately.

“Mrs. Marina, give me that envelope,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because this matter is already closed.”

“A closed matter does not bring a living woman out of my house twenty-one years later.”

Levan’s face tensed.

Ayla’s daughter raised her phone.

“This conversation is being broadcast live to the investigative service.”

For the first time Levan lost his confidence.

“You do not know whom you are fighting.”

“Now I know whom we trust,” I told him.

My phone rang again. This time it was my lawyer, Nino, calling. After Demian’s death she had been helping me with matters concerning the estate.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo reservó una habitación separada para nuestro aniversario, pero cuando empezó a desabrocharse la camisa, mi sonrisa desapareció

“Marina, I heard everything,” she told me.

“How?”

“Ayla sent me a copy of the recording. And one more thing. Demian left me a letter saying that if anyone tried to shift money or a crime onto you, I was to hand the documents over to the police immediately.”},{

“Can you do that?”

“I already have. An investigation against Levan has begun.”

Levan took out his phone and called someone.

“They have everything,” he said. “No, everything.”

Then he ended the call and for the first time looked not like a powerful lawyer, but like a man who had realized that no one was standing behind him anymore.

The next morning the police charged the former owner of the clinic and two administrators with falsifying old records, embezzlement, and hiding evidence. Levan gave testimony. Ayla was taken to the hospital because the tension of the whole night had made her heart feel bad.

I, meanwhile, sat in Nino’s office and listened to Demian’s recording.

His voice sounded in the room:

“Marina, you were far from all this. I opened the account in your name because the clinic owner wanted to use you. When I found out, I returned the money, but the documents had already been falsified. I did not tell you because I was afraid that I would lose you too because of my mistakes.”

Nino’s pen lay in front of me. Its tip tapped nervously on the table.

The recording continued:

“I saved Ayla’s daughter that night, but afterward I hid her existence. I thought it was protection. In reality, it was my fear. Marina, if you ever find out, do not say that my life was a lie. My silence was a lie. The years spent with you were the only truth that no one can take from me.”

The recorder stopped.

Silence descended in the room.

For the first time I listened to my husband from the side. I understood his fear, his cowardice, his love, and the harm he had caused others in the name of love.

!!!  Mi nueva empleada entró en mi ala privada y habló al hombre que todos temían; entonces alguien en la casa dejó de respirar

When I returned home, I entered the empty bedroom. Demian’s wardrobe was already half-empty. Only his gray wool vest remained on the chair. I took the copper key from its pocket and placed it on my palm.

That small object opened my entire life.

Several weeks later Ayla’s daughter came to me. Her name was Elene. We drank tea in the kitchen, and she placed the yellow ceramic bird on the table.

“Did Demian often tell you about me?” I asked.

“When I was a child, he only told me that there was a woman to whom he would tell the truth one day.”

“Was he talking about me?”

“Yes. He said that you stayed beside him even when he was no longer worthy of it.”

I could not answer those words.

Elene ran her finger over the bird.

“Do you hate him?”

“Sometimes I am angry.”

“And now?”

Outside the window the first snow began to fall. White flakes swirled in the streetlight.

“Now I am trying not to bequeath his actions to the rest of my life.”

I started working at the city’s small library. In the mornings I arranged the book-return shelf, at noon I read to children, and in the evenings, when I returned home, I drank tea by the window. For the first time in many years, silence was no longer an enemy.

Elene came once a week. One day she drew a house on a sheet of paper, and beside it three people—me, Ayla, and herself. Demian was not in the drawing.

“Why didn’t you draw him?” I asked.

“Because now we are living.”

This simple sentence struck me more sharply than any court decision.

The investigation continued for months. The clinic’s former owner and the administrators were convicted. Levan lost the right to practice law and received a suspended sentence because he himself handed all the documents over to the investigators. Ayla officially restored her daughter’s name. Elene saw for the first time the birth record in which her life was no longer hidden.

I did not sell Demian’s house. I changed only one room. I emptied his wardrobe, painted the walls a light color, and placed a bookshelf by the window.

!!!  The Husband Locked His Pregnant Wife in a Freezer, but a Familiar Voice Sounded Behind the Door and Victor’s Smile Disappeared

One morning I received a letter by mail.

It was not in Demian’s handwriting.

Levan wrote to me that he felt remorse. He said he would start everything over if I changed my official statement and did not testify against him. At the end there was one sentence: “You loved Demian after all, so you will understand why I acted this way.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I put it in the trash can.

I called Nino.

“I will not answer,” I told her.

“That is your choice.”

“I know.”

That evening I placed the copper key on the shelf, beside the yellow ceramic bird. Before, the key had meant a closed door to me. Now it was only a small piece of metal that had nothing left to hide.

It was snowing outside the window. Elene was making tea in the kitchen, while Ayla was telling her an old story. Their voices mingled with one another in the room.

I looked at the key and for the first time no longer wanted to go back.

I left the door open.

Missed the beginning?
