My husband threw me out of the house and brought his lover in right there — but he turned pale for the first time at my calm answer

Sandro placed my suitcase by the door and told me that I no longer lived in the house that I had bought.

It was nine o’clock in the evening. I had spent the whole day at the office — argued with two suppliers, settled a client’s late payment, and had the accountant check the reports to the end. I was still wearing my dark blue coat, and in my hand I held a bag full of documents.

An open suitcase stood in the hallway. Inside lay old jeans, a striped shirt, and that brown scarf which I had thrown away three years ago.

Sandro was sitting in the living room and playing with the television remote with his fingers.

“Take your things and leave,” he told me.

For several seconds I thought that I had not understood correctly.

“What did you say?”

“Leave, I’m telling you. We can no longer live together.”

There was such weariness in his voice, as if I had been his burden for all ten years and not the other way around.

Sandro had had his last stable job three years earlier. After that he left one store, then quarreled with a construction-materials company, and then took marketing courses with my money. Finally, I opened a small café for him. It closed in four months.

After that Sandro said that he had to find himself.

He searched for two years.

During those two years I paid the mortgage, utility bills, his fuel, insurance, telephone, gym, and weekly feasts with friends.

“Why did you pack my things?” I asked.

“Because living with you is impossible. You come late, you are always on the phone, and you measure everything with money.”

“This is my apartment, Sandro.”

He chuckled.

“It is our apartment. I have lived here for ten years.”

“I bought the apartment before the marriage.”

“Are you starting the legal lectures again?”

I immediately hated his smile. Not because it was cruel, but because it seemed overly self-confident.

There were two glasses on the table. One for Sandro, the other — a thin wineglass on which a trace of red lipstick remained. A woman’s cream-colored scarf lay over the back of the sofa.

“Was Marina here?” I asked.

The remote crackled in Sandro’s hand.

“That is no longer your business.”

“How long has it been?”

“Four months.”

Marina was his sister’s friend. Once, at a family dinner, she sat beside me and told me what a happy woman I was to have such a devoted husband.

“Is she coming today?” I asked.

Sandro did not answer.

!!!  Part 4 — The rich guest struck me in front of everyone, but as soon as the man who entered the hall opened the door, he strangely stopped breathing

The silence said everything.

“Are you taking my things out so that you can bring her here?”

“We want to live together.”

“In my house?”

“You always talk like this. ‘My house,’ ‘my money,’ ‘my car.’ That is exactly why I no longer love you.”

These words seemed to open a window in a room that had been locked for a long time. Suddenly I saw clearly: I was not humiliating him. My existence simply constantly reminded him of what he did not have.

I closed the suitcase.

Sandro became confused.

“Are you just leaving like that?”

“Wasn’t that what you asked me to do?”

I stopped at the door and looked back.

“Are you sure you want me to leave today?”

“Absolutely.”

“Good.”

My hands began to tremble in the elevator. On the first floor I called Nika, and then my lawyer, Irina.

“Do not sign anything today,” Irina told me. “Do not transfer any money. Come to me in the morning.”

I put the suitcase on the pavement and looked up at the windows of the fourth floor.

That night I still did not know why Sandro looked so calm. Nor did I know that, when I arrived at Irina’s office, a folder would be waiting for me whose opening would erase my husband from my life forever…

I arrived at Irina’s office at eight o’clock in the morning. Nika was with me too. She placed a sealed folder on the table.

“Yesterday evening I checked the property register,” Irina told me. “Sandro’s lawyer filed an application this morning.”

“About what?”

“He claims that he has a share in the apartment and requested access to the company accounts.”

I felt cold in my throat.

“He has neither a share nor authority.”

Irina put her hand on the folder.

“Officially, no. But someone used your old signature. Also, last night they tried to withdraw a large amount from the company account.”

Nika clenched his fists.

“Let’s go to the police.”

“First we need evidence,” Irina said. “And we already have evidence.”

She took out a small memory device.

“The cameras in your office recorded a conversation. Sandro was not acting alone.”

My heart began beating heavily.

“Marina?”

Irina nodded.

“But another name is heard in the recording. The name of someone you would not expect at all.”

At that moment an unknown number lit up on my phone.

“If you want to find out what they are planning, come to the old hotel this evening,” a man’s voice said. “Alone.”

!!!  Soțul meu a cerut divorțul în fața mamei lui, iar răspunsul meu liniștit a făcut-o să-și piardă zâmbetul

The call ended. Irina looked at my face and quietly asked:

“Elene, did you recognize this voice?”

I recognized it.

And that was exactly why I became most frightened…

We arrived at the third floor of the old hotel at seven o’clock in the evening. I did not go alone — Irina and Nika were waiting for me in the car, while my phone lay in my pocket with recording turned on.

I entered the room and immediately recognized the man standing by the window.

“Dato?”

Dato was the former financial manager of my company. Six months earlier I had fired him myself, because I had discovered small but repeated discrepancies in the accounts.

“I did not think you would come,” he told me.

“Did you call me?”

“Yes. Because Sandro is not taking only your life away from you, but everything.”

He placed a thick folder on the table. My company’s seal was on the cover, but the corner of the seal had come off slightly.

“What is this?”

“A plan they drew up four months ago. Marina, together with Sandro, cut your signature out of an old contract, transferred it to a digital file, and made a power of attorney. Their goal was to sell the apartment, withdraw money from the company account, and then blame you.”

My breath caught.

“Did Sandro know?”

Dato smiled bitterly.

“He knew everything. He himself told me that you would soon leave the house and would no longer be able to resist.”

He connected the memory device to the laptop. Sandro’s voice sounded in the room.

“Elene is emotional. As soon as I tell her that I am going to Marina, she will leave the house herself. Then we will say that the apartment is joint property.”

It was the voice of my own husband.

My fingers gripped the edge of the table.

In the recording Marina asked:

“And what if she resists?”

Sandro answered:

“She will have no evidence. Dato will arrange the accounts so that it looks as if she took the money.”

Dato lowered his eyes.

“I became afraid. At first I did it for money, but then I realized that you would end up in prison, while I would become an unnecessary witness for them.”

“Why now?”

“Because yesterday Sandro told me that he had already thrown you out of the house. And today they were going to withdraw the money.”

At that moment Irina entered the room and opened a second folder.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Mi-am dus nepotul la urgențe după ce fiul meu mi-a poruncit să nu-i scot hăinuța, iar asistenta a încremenit

“The bank stopped the transfer. The court also issued a temporary ban. But there is one more thing.”

“What?”

She handed me a photograph. It had been taken in the storage room of my office; there were boxes with the clients’ names on them.

“Marina transferred your clients’ data. They are creating a new company and are already offering your clients services.”

Everything I suspected turned out to be bigger than I had imagined.

The phone rang. It was Sandro.

“Where are you?” he asked me. “Come home and let’s talk.”

“This is no longer your house,” I told him.

He was silent for several seconds, then said quietly:

“Elene, you do not yet know who you are going against.”

The call ended.

Irina looked into my eyes.

“Now we know what they did. But Sandro still thinks that the last word belongs to him.”

At that very moment a new message arrived on my phone. It contained only one photograph — the door of my little daughter’s room, which had remained in the house.

Below it was written one sentence: “If you do not return, you will lose that which you love most.”

I looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then I realized that Sandro was no longer threatening only my money. He had touched my weakest place…
