Part 4 — I Found the Sleeping Daughter of the Cleaner at My Office Door, but Her Letter Frightened Me for the First Time

Sofia’s photo was still shining on the screen.

The address was an old harbor warehouse.

It was four forty-two in the morning. In the police station, the ticking of the wall clock sounded too loud to me. Lily was sleeping in Investigator Elena’s room, with my jacket beneath her head. Her little golden moon moved slightly with every breath.

“Do not go alone,” Elena told me.

“That is what the letter demanded.”

“That is exactly why you must not go.”

My phone rang. It was Arthur, the company lawyer.

“Mr. Cole, the board members are demanding an emergency meeting.”

“I cannot deal with that now.”

“Mark has blocked the company’s security systems. In addition, someone has frozen your personal accounts.”

“They can freeze them.”

“They have also spread information that you are suspected of kidnapping an employee’s child.”

I closed my eyes.

Six hours earlier I had found Lily at the door of my office. Now the whole city was using her existence against me.

“Arthur, can you stay on my side?”

Silence fell at the other end of the line.

“I am staying on your side, but I cannot go against the board if we do not have documents.”

“We have documents.”

“No. We only have the initial copies. We have not found the main document yet.”

At these words I remembered Sofia’s recording again: the evidence is in the room where you first saw her.

My office.

Elena knocked on the door.

“Lily has woken up.”

The girl entered the room and rubbed her eyes.

“Are we going to see Mother?”

“We will try.”

“Are you coming too?”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“You will both go together. But in a police car.”

We arrived at the harbor at five fifteen in the morning. The sea wind slammed the iron doors. One lamp flickered in the warehouse.

I went ahead.

“Sofia!” I called.

In response I heard only the sound of water drops.

Suddenly a woman came out from the corner. Her hair was disheveled, blood had dried on her forehead, but the same firm calm as in that letter stood in her eyes.

“Lily!” she shouted.

Lily broke away from my hand and ran to her mother.

I froze in place.

Sofia hugged her daughter, then turned toward me.

“I’m sorry, Damon.”

“I searched for you all night.”

“I knew.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about Lily?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Because your father threatened me. He said that if I revealed the truth, he would destroy your life and take Lily away from me.”

“He is dead.”

“His people are still alive.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Mrs. Moran, Mark Hale has been arrested. But you must explain to us who attacked you.”

Sofia took out a small memory card and held it out to me.

“This is a recording from the camera in your office. Mark did not know that your father had left a second camera.”

“What does it show?”

“On the night Nicholas died, he was not alone.”

I took the card from her. A few minutes later, we played the recording in the police car.

My father could be seen on the screen. He was standing in the office, holding a folder. In front of him sat Mark and the company’s financial director, Victor.

“I am stopping the withdrawal of money from the foundation,” my father was saying. “I have transferred everything to Damon.”

“Then will you tell the boy?” Victor was asking.

“When the time comes.”

Then Mark put something on the table. My father fell into the chair. The recording stopped.

Sofia said quietly:

“This is evidence of murder. Your father did not die of illness.”

I stared at the screen. For years I had thought my father had built everything for me. Now for the first time I understood that his last decision had been not for me, but for Lily.

Elena immediately gave orders. Victor and two more company directors were arrested that same morning. Mark denied everything during questioning, but the camera recording, the financial transfers, and his own conversations matched one another.

Within a few hours he asked for a lawyer.

The lawyer refused.

“You asked me to hide the truth from you,” he told him. “Now I can no longer do that.”

For the first time I saw on Mark’s face what I had failed to notice in others for years: a person who was afraid of his own words.

At the court’s preparatory hearing, the prosecutor played his recording. Mark’s voice sounded through the courtroom:

“If the child disappears, Damon will also give up the company.”

Then his second voice came:

“Sofia, take Lily and do not return.”

Mark sat in the chair and listened to his own words. He could no longer raise his head.

I felt no revenge against him. Only exhaustion. The kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying someone else’s sins for years.

The court sentenced Mark and Victor to long imprisonment. The stolen company funds were returned to the foundation. My father’s case was also officially declared a murder.

But for me, the hardest day was not the court, but emptying my office.

Several weeks later I went up to the eighty-fourth floor alone. The pictures had been removed from the walls. Only one thing remained on the glass table—the old brass key that had opened the archive door for me.

The trace of the fold of my jacket could still be seen on the floor, as if Lily’s small body were still lying there.

For the first time, the empty corridor no longer seemed safe to me. But it did not seem hostile either.

It was simply empty.

Three months later Sofia and Lily left the city. I bought them a house in a small seaside town, but Sofia firmly told me that this should not be a gift, but Lily’s own safety.

“You are not obliged to suddenly become a father,” she told me.

“I know.”

“Then do not try to be perfect.”

“What should I try to be?”

Lily heard our conversation and placed a sheet of paper on the table. Four people were drawn on it: herself, Sofia, me, and a small yellow sun.

“Try this,” she said. “Coming home.”

For the first time I laughed without needing to hide it.

In the new city I worked four days a week. I kept running the company, but I no longer had a private office on the eighty-fourth floor. My desk stood by a window where the sound of seagulls could be heard in the morning.

Lily called me every evening.

“Today I drew a moon for the first time at school.”

“Golden?”

“No. Silver. It no longer resembles your key.”

On the first morning of winter I went to them. Snow lay in the yard. Lily ran around in a red hat, leaving tracks.

Sofia opened the door.

!!!  Mein millionenschwerer Ex-Mann stürmte an Heiligabend in mein Haus, doch beim Anblick des Kinderzimmers verlor er jede Farbe

“The coffee is ready.”

“You still use too little sugar.”

“And you still notice everything.”

Lily’s new drawing lay on the table. This time she had drawn not four people, but one house. A little golden moon hung above the door.

A few days later I received a letter from Mark. He had sent it from prison. Only one sentence was written: “Can you come and listen to me at least once?”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Before, I listened to everyone who held power in my life. Now for the first time I could say no without needing to explain it.

In reply I wrote: “I have already heard everything that was necessary.”

Then I folded the letter and put it in the trash can.

In the evening Lily took my hand.

“Dad, will you come again tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow and the day after too.”

“Then bring the key with you.”

I took the old brass key out of my pocket. It no longer opened either the archive or the secret cabinet. Still, I carried it with me.

Lily touched it with her finger.

“Did this open a door?”

“Once.”

“And now?”

I looked at the snowy yard, where her little tracks led to the house.

“Now it reminds me of home.”

I placed the key in her hand.

And that night, for the first time in my life, I left the door open.

Missed the beginning?
