I Found the Sleeping Daughter of the Cleaner at My Office Door, but Her Letter Frightened Me for the First Time

That night I found a little girl sleeping at the door of my office, and the letter clutched in her fist told me something I had been running from my whole life.

It was thirteen minutes to midnight. On the eighty-fourth floor, only the low hum of the air conditioner could be heard. I had always loved this silence. It asked nothing of me.

I was the chief executive officer of Meridian Tower, and everything in my life was measured in spreadsheets, contracts, and secured doors. But that night, when I stepped out of the elevator, a four-year-old child was lying at my door.

She was wearing a red velvet dress. Her hair was tied into two uneven braids, and her shoes were half off. Her cheek rested on the cold marble. Beside her stood an abandoned cleaning cart, and the smell of lemon cleaning solution spread through the entire corridor.

“Little one, can you hear me?” I bent down.

The girl opened her eyes.

“Where is your mommy?” I asked.

“She told me to wait.”

“Whom are you waiting for?”

She first looked at my face, then clenched her fist tighter. I noticed a folded piece of paper between her fingers.

“This is for the boss,” she whispered.

“I am the boss.”

The girl stared at me for a long time. Then she held out the paper to me with both hands.

“Read it quickly. They must not find me.”

My hand froze in the air.

“Who are they?”

She shook her head and clutched the sleeve of my shirt.

“My name is Lily,” she said.

I took off my expensive jacket and spread it on the floor. I laid Lily on it. I did not understand why I was doing this, but for the first time in a long while I was beginning to act with instinct, not with my mind.

I opened the paper. I recognized Sofia’s handwriting immediately. Sofia had cleaned my floor for three years. She was a quiet, precise woman. I had always merely nodded to her and had never asked what her surname was.

The letter said that I should keep Lily safe until Sofia returned. It said that I should not call the authorities yet. At the end stood one sentence: if certain people found Lily, not only the child would be in danger—both I and my company would be in danger.

At that same moment, the elevator numbers lit up.

Lily jumped up frightened.

“Are they here?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mother told me not to leave the door.”

The elevator rang. The doors had not opened yet, but footsteps could already be heard in the corridor. I picked Lily up and approached the electronic lock of my office door.

“Mr. Cole?” came the voice of Mark Hale, the head of security, from outside.

Lily’s body tightened against my chest.

“Don’t open it,” she whispered.

“Mark, why are you here?”

“There was an incident at the lower entrance. The manager said something had been left on your floor.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Me fui de casa después de mi graduación y dejé una carta sobre la cama; cuando mi madre la leyó, dejó de respirar

His voice sounded normal, but my phone immediately began to tremble. I received a notification from the security cameras: the rear service elevator was moving upward from the twelfth floor, although no one was supposed to be there that night.

Mark knocked again.

“Open up, Damon. There isn’t a child with you, is there?”

Lily clung to me so tightly that her fingernails dug into my skin.

Then I understood: Sofia had not simply asked me for help. She had hidden her daughter directly with the people who did not deserve my trust.

But why at my door?

I unlocked the lock. The door opened slowly. Behind Mark stood two unfamiliar men in black jackets. One of them held a folded folder in his hand.

“Mr. Cole,” Mark said, “where is this child’s mother?”

I did not answer. The unfamiliar man raised the folder.

“We have several questions about this matter. First of all, please hand the child over.”

Lily was crying silently against my neck. For the first time I noticed that her little red shoes had golden, moon-shaped metal buckles.

And at that very moment my personal phone rang sharply. Sofia’s number appeared on the screen.

The call rang only once and stopped. Then a message came: “Trust no one. Find the lock that bears my father’s name.”

I looked at the old archive door at the end of the corridor. No one had used that door for years.

“Mark, step back,” I told him.

For the first time, he did not smile at me.

“Damon, you have to open the door for us.”

“I have already opened it for you.”

The unfamiliar man reached toward the folder. I pulled Lily closer with one arm and reached with the other for the drawer of archive keys. One key had an old brass plate on it, and my father’s name was written on it.

I slid the key into the lock, but I had not opened the door yet. Behind me, in my office, Sofia’s letter lay on the desk. Outside, Mark’s voice already sounded like an order.

I turned the key and the archive door slowly opened…

The door opened and the smell of dust and old wood rushed out from inside. I held Lily to my chest and entered the darkness.

“Stop!” Mark shouted.

I locked the door from inside. Lily held back her crying.

“Was Mother here?” she asked.

“I don’t know. But we’ll find out.”

I turned on the light. Old files belonging to my father stood on the shelves. Against the wall stood a small iron cabinet. On it was the same brass plate that the key had.

A blow came from outside.

“Damon, this will be considered kidnapping a child!” Mark shouted.

“Then call the police.”

“Think first.”

I opened the cabinet door. Inside lay only one brown folder and an old voice recorder. On the folder was written: “Nicholas Cole—Personal.”

!!!  Llevé a otro hombre a la fiesta del jefe que jamás me veía, y cuando él se acercó, su sonrisa desapareció

My father’s name.

There was one file in the recorder. I turned it on. First came static, then my father’s voice:

“If you found this recording, know that someone in your company is continuing that deal even after my death.”

The little metal moon on Lily’s shoe touched the floor and made a clinking sound.

Then Sofia’s voice came from the recorder:

“Damon, if you are listening to this recording, they have already found us. But what I could not write in the letter concerns your family…”

The recording suddenly stopped.

At that same moment came the sound of the lock being broken from outside. Mark was no longer alone. I took the folder, hid Lily behind the cabinet, and turned toward the door.

“Damon!” Mark shouted. “You have no choice now!”

The door shook.

The first sheet of the folder trembled in my hand. My father’s signature was visible on it, and there was one date, two years after my mother’s death…

The door shook for the third time and the iron lock rattled. Lily was hiding behind the cabinet, while I clutched my father’s folder as if it were the only weapon I had left.

The first page of the folder said that Nicholas Cole had secretly transferred the controlling share of the company to his son. But on the second page everything changed. It said that for six years money from the company’s funds had been sent to a foundation whose beneficiary was Sofia Moran.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

“Why?” Lily asked from behind the cabinet.

I could not answer.

The door lock finally broke. Mark and the two men burst into the room. Mark was holding a gun, though its barrel was pointed downward.

“Hand the child over,” he said.

“First tell me where Sofia is.”

“That is none of your business.”

“Money was transferred from my company’s accounts to her foundation. With my father’s signature.”

Mark’s face changed.

I took the next sheet. There was a copy of a birth certificate. Sofia Moran was written in the mother’s field. The father’s field was empty. But on the document attached beside it, my father had written by hand: “Lily is my granddaughter. Damon must learn the truth when the danger is over.”

Silence fell over the room.

“Is Lily my niece?” I asked.

Mark lowered his eyes.

“No,” he said. “She is your daughter.”

My breath caught.

“What are you saying?”

“Sofia worked for you when you were twenty-two. There was a relationship between you. She hid the pregnancy because Nicholas forced her to. She was afraid he would destroy your career. Then your father gave Sofia money so that she could protect Lily.”

“And why did she bring the child to me now?”

Mark clenched his jaw.

“Because she discovered the theft of the money in the foundation. She learned that after Nicholas’s death the funds would be transferred into your name. Whoever was doing this would get rid of her and Lily.”

!!!  My son's life managed to save his sister, but on Hannah's eighteenth birthday she opened a letter and a guest turned pale

I took the old voice recorder and turned it on again. Sofia’s voice sounded strained and hurried:

“Damon, Lily is your daughter. I am not asking you for forgiveness. I am only asking you not to let those people take her away from you. Mark is with them. But everything is not on the recording. The evidence is in the room where you first saw her.”

“This is a lie!” Mark shouted.

Sirens sounded outside. I had called the police in advance, before entering the archive. Mark raised the gun, but one of the unfamiliar men seized his hand.

“It’s over, Mark,” he told him. “We will not protect you anymore.”

Mark froze.

Lily came out from behind the cabinet and came to me.

“Are you my father?”

I got down on my knees.

“If you want me to be.”

She first examined my face, then wrapped her arms around my neck. That embrace broke me more powerfully than any business failure.

The police arrested Mark. They took the folder, the recording, and the financial documents for examination. I thought I already knew the main secret.

But in the corridor, a female investigator held out her phone to me. On the screen was a photo sent from an unknown number: Sofia was lying on a hospital bed, and beside her, on a whiteboard, one address was written.

The investigator quietly told me:

“This photo was sent ten minutes ago. The hospital says they have no such patient.”

Below the photo stood only one sentence: “If you want to see your daughter, come alone before five in the morning.”

Lily clutched my hand. And I understood that Mark’s arrest was not the end, but the beginning of the next danger…
