I was hugging my newborn daughter when my husband asked me a strange question and the woman who appeared at the door turned pale

The doctor had not yet washed his hands when my husband froze beside our newborn daughter’s crib and quietly asked me: “How do you know this?”

After eighteen hours of labor, I could barely open my eyes. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled the room, and morning rain ran down the windowpane in thin streaks. Our girl was wrapped in a small blanket and breathing peacefully in the crib.

We had dreamed of Lily for four years. Four years together with doctors, examinations, and disappointed silent evenings. When two lines appeared on the test, Ethan and I cried at the same time.

“You and this little girl are everything to me,” he told me during the pregnancy, placing his hand on my belly.

I believed him.

That was why I was frightened when he entered the room at nine in the morning and I saw fear instead of joy on his face. He held white irises in his hand. He took one step, looked at the crib, and the flowers fell from his hand onto the floor.

“Ethan?” I barely breathed.

Ethan stared at Lily’s face. Behind the child’s left ear, under her hair, was a small crescent-shaped birthmark. During the pregnancy, her grandmother Marina had attached a small silver elephant-shaped clasp to the knitted cap so that the cap would not slip over the baby. Now that very clasp pressed against Lily’s blanket and quietly jingled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ethan asked me.

“What didn’t I tell you?”

His lips had gone pale.

“You don’t see this?”

I picked Lily up. Her body was warm, her breathing peaceful, and her fingers clasped my index finger as if she already knew me.

“I see my daughter,” I told him. “What do you see?”

Ethan sank onto a chair and covered his face with his hands.

“There is something I should have told you years ago.”

“Then tell me now.”

He raised his head. There were tears in his eyes.

“I thought I had buried it forever.”

“What did you bury?”

He looked at the baby again.

“I already had a child once.”

The machine in the room beeped twice briefly. It was as though it had answered his words too.

“What do you mean, you already had a child?” I asked, feeling my fingers grow cold.

“A girl. Emma.”

“Where is she?”

Ethan could not answer me. At that moment, quick footsteps sounded from the corridor. The door opened so hard that the handle struck the wall.

A tall woman stood on the threshold. Her wet hair clung to her cheeks, and in her hand she held a folded yellow folder. She looked first at Lily, then at Ethan.

Ethan stood up.

“Mara…”

The color drained from the woman’s face.

“You still remember, since you call me that?” she said.

I hugged Lily tighter.

“Who is this woman?”

Mara took one step toward me.

“I am Emma’s mother.”

Ethan raised his hand.

“You should not have come here.”

“On the contrary,” Mara answered. “I had to come exactly here. Because your first daughter is alive, Ethan. And today I saw for the first time a girl who has her face.”

My heart beat so fast that I could hear the sound of blood in my ears.

“You told me Emma died,” I said to my husband.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Mara put the folder on the edge of the bed and opened the clasp. Her fingers were trembling.

“I imagined this day for seven years,” she said. “But I did not think I would have to tell the truth beside a newborn’s crib.”

I stared at the folder. Ethan reached toward it. His fingers touched the first page when someone shouted in the corridor:

“Ma’am, you do not have permission to enter here!”

A man’s footsteps came rapidly closer. Mara covered the folder, while Ethan seized the clasp, and exactly at the moment when he was supposed to begin opening it…

Ethan’s hand froze on the folder.

“Don’t open it,” he said quietly.

“Why?” I asked. “What else are you hiding from me?”

Mara looked toward the door. A security officer could be seen in the corridor, but the woman did not move.

“Ethan told everyone that Emma had died,” she told me. “In reality, when the child became ill, he chose to run away from the hospital.”

“You lied to me?” I asked.

Ethan shook his head.

“I was afraid.”

“For seven years?”

“I did not know how to tell you.”

Mara opened the folder and took out a photograph. In the photograph, a seven-year-old girl stood beside a red umbrella. Behind her left ear, the same crescent-shaped birthmark could be seen.

Something collapsed inside my chest.

“Emma is alive,” Mara said. “But her heart is growing weaker. The doctors said she urgently needs a suitable donor.”

Ethan looked at her in fear.

“Why did you come here?”

“Because Lily may be the only person who can save her.”

Silence fell over the room. I held a newborn in my arms, and in front of me stood a man who had hidden another life throughout our entire marriage.

Mara took a white sheet of paper from the folder.

“This is only the beginning,” she said. “The document says that at Emma’s birth, the father signed an acknowledgment. But the signature is not his…”

The security officer standing in the doorway stepped back. I reached toward the paper, and just then Mara quietly leaned toward me, as if she were saying the most terrible words only to me.

“Nino, Lily is not only a donor. She may be the main witness in this case…”

Mara placed the paper in my hands. The paper smelled of dampness, and one corner was folded as if someone had carried it in a pocket for years.

“Read it,” she told me.

I could not. The letters blurred before my eyes.

“You read it,” I asked.

Mara took a deep breath.

“The father’s signature listed on Emma’s birth certificate is forged. Ethan never signed it. I am listed as the child’s mother, but an unknown person is written down as the father. And for years Ethan told everyone that the child was his and then died.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Is this true?”

He stared at the wall. His face was gray.

“Emma is my daughter,” he said. “But the document… I did not sign it.”

“Then who signed it?” I asked.

Mara took a second sheet of paper from her bag.

“An old clinic record. That day Ethan signed a refusal to acknowledge paternity because the doctor said Emma had a severe heart defect. He abandoned the child and asked me to tell everyone that she had died from her illness.”

Ethan grabbed the chair.

“I was twenty-one then. I had no money. I thought I would die in a few days too.”

“But you did not die,” I told him. “You got married. You dreamed of a child with me. And not once did you tell me.”

“I was afraid you would hate me.”

“Now I hate the man who hid the truth when a little girl was waiting for his name.”

Mara pointed behind Lily’s ear.

“Emma has the crescent-shaped birthmark too. That is why I recognized her. But the resemblance is not only in appearance. We have already conducted a rapid genetic test. Lily is Emma’s half-sister. Ethan is her biological father.”

All strength left my hands.

“You knew Lily was your daughter,” I said to Ethan.

“I did not know,” he whispered. “But when I saw her, I realized that the past had returned.”

Mara unfolded a third sheet.

“Lily’s blood type matches Emma’s. The doctors said bone-marrow donation is possible. But there is a problem.”

“What problem?” I asked.

Mara did not look at me.

“Emma is now in the clinic, while the money for her treatment came from the foundation Ethan managed. Money disappeared from the foundation. And all the transfers were made with his signature.”

Ethan raised his head sharply.

“I did not steal the money!”

The security officer standing in the doorway looked at his phone. A few seconds later, a woman in a black coat entered the room.

“I am a lawyer,” she said. “The police have just received the bank statements and the clinic records.”

Ethan walked toward her.

“Mariam, help me.”

The woman stepped back.

“I can no longer protect you. Because the last transfer of funds was made one hour ago.”

“Where was it transferred?” I asked.

The lawyer looked directly at me.

“Into your account. And the camera recorded evidence proving it.”

Ethan’s face changed. He took out his phone, but a message from an unknown number appeared on the screen. He read it and, this time, he was truly frightened.

“What does it say?” I asked.

He could not utter a sound.

Mara snatched the phone from his hand. The message contained only one sentence: “If you do not bring Lily to the clinic today, Emma will not wake up…”
