I Entered the Operating Room Pregnant with Twins, but When the Surgeon Quietly Said My Name, the Color Drained from His Face

I entered the operating room drained of blood, while the surgeon who was supposed to save my children’s lives said my name as if a wound from five years earlier had opened again.

“Hanna…”

That one word was enough for the white ceiling, the flickering lights, and the intermittent sounds of the monitors to become mixed together. I barely opened my eyes. A mask covered his face, but I recognized his eyes immediately.

Ethan Caldwell.

The man who had once told me that a simple life with me was more valuable than all of his father’s wealth. The man who had thrown me out of the house in the rain five years earlier and had not looked back even once.

“Doctor, we’re losing her!” the nurse shouted.

Ethan moved his gaze from my face to the monitor.

“Her pressure is dropping. We are starting surgery immediately. Prepare two neonatal teams and blood.”

His voice was calm. Too calm. As if I were a strange woman before him and not the person for whom he had once wanted to go against the whole world.

And I wanted only one thing: for the babies to be saved.

My abdomen hurt as if it were collapsing from the inside. With my left hand I clutched an old copper bracelet. It was the only thing I had left from the night Ethan threw me out of the house. A little bird hung from the bracelet, one of whose wings had been broken years earlier. I had always believed that if I squeezed it in my hand, I would not lose myself.

“Hanna, can you hear me?” the anesthesiologist asked.

“My… babies…”

“We are doing everything for them.”

Ethan bent over my head.

“Hanna, you have to trust me.”

I wanted to laugh, but blood rose into my throat.

“Five years ago too… I trusted you.”

Something froze in his eyes. Then the operating room pulled me back into the noise.

Five years earlier, we lived in a small apartment in the suburbs of Chicago. I drew illustrations for children’s books, while Ethan said that one day he would have his own clinic. His family considered this ridiculous. Especially his mother, Victoria, who believed that a person was worthy only when the stock market recognized his surname.

That night Victoria told me that I was deceiving Ethan and had transferred money from his account. I had proof that it had been done by her assistant, but Ethan did not even listen to me.

“My family will not fall apart because of you!” he shouted at me.

“Your family is already ruined; you simply cannot see it!”

He opened the door.

I went out into the rain.

And now his hands were cutting into my body so that my children could have a chance at life.

“Baby A is coming out!” the surgeon’s assistant said.

The first twin was a little boy. For one second he did not move. Then his thin cry rang through the room, and I, despite my clouded consciousness, understood that I was still fighting death.

The second child turned out to be a girl. She was born silently.

Too silently.

“The heartbeat is unstable,” the neonatologist said.

Ethan clenched his teeth.

“Do not stop. Once more.”

The monitor emitted a long, piercing sound.

Then the tiny heartbeat returned.

When dawn came, I was lying in the intensive care unit, while the babies were fighting in incubators. I could not speak. My mouth was dry, and I was still holding that copper bird with the broken wing in my hand.

Ethan picked up the transparent bag with my belongings. Inside were the bracelet, an old photograph, and a folded letter. Only one name was visible on the outside of the letter.

!!!  Mi hermana huyó el día de su boda y mi familia me obligó a casarme con el hombre que amaba mientras él estaba en coma; dos años después, cuando me pidió el divorcio por ella, abrí el expediente gris que podía destruirlos a todos

His name.

“Do not read it,” I whispered from the doorway.

Ethan turned around.

I was leaning on a nurse, barely able to stand. But on his face I still saw the shock from five years earlier.

At that moment Victoria Caldwell appeared at the end of the corridor.

First she looked at me, then at the letter.

And all the color drained from her face when Ethan reached toward the folder…

Ethan’s hand was extended toward the folder when Victoria crossed the corridor so quickly that her high-heeled shoes made a sharp sound on the marble floor.

“This woman is a patient, not a member of your family,” she said. “Do not touch her belongings.”

Ethan took the letter in his hand.

“Why do you know what is in here?”

Victoria was confused for a moment, but immediately smiled. It was the smile she used at parties when she destroyed someone as if she were giving them a compliment.

“Five years later she is putting on drama again. She is probably asking for money.”

“My children are fighting for their lives,” I said in a hoarse voice. “Do not dare talk about money now.”

“Children?” Victoria raised an eyebrow. “Ethan, you do not know who the father of this woman’s children is.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You do not know either.”

“I know that Hanna has always created problems.”

My fingers closed around the copper bird. The metal dug into my skin, but this pain was better than the fear growing in my heart.

“Doctor, both babies are in critical condition,” the neonatal doctor, Dr. Mira Patel, told me. “The boy needs help breathing, and the girl’s heart rhythm is becoming irregular again.”

“I want to go to them,” I said.

“You must lie down first.”

“No. I will not leave them alone.”

Ethan stood between Victoria and me. His white coat was stained with small spots of blood. For the first time he looked at the bracelet clenched in my hand.

“You still have this?” he asked quietly.

“I could not throw everything away.”

His jaw tightened.

“Is the letter for me?”

“It was for you five years ago. Now it is already too late.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Ethan, you have just come out of surgery. Do not give in to your emotions.”

“Mother, why are you afraid of one letter?”

Her face changed. Only for one second, but I noticed it.

The nurse took me to the room. The clock on the wall showed six in the morning. Rain was still wetting the window, while the heart monitor beside the bed was ticking evenly. Ethan stood at the door, as if he had no permission to enter.

“You can leave,” I told him.

“Am I the children’s father?”

My breath caught.

“You should have asked that question when you did not trust your mother’s words more than me.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“The truth is in the letter.”

“Why did you not send it to me?”

“I sent it. Three times.”

Ethan fell silent.

“None of them reached you,” I added. “Victoria blocked everything. Then she told me that if I contacted you again, she would make my brother lose his job and file a false complaint about me with the police.”

“That is impossible.”

“For you, it was also impossible that I had not stolen the money.”

Dr. Patel appeared in the doorway.

“The babies’ condition is stable now, but the next hours will be decisive.”

!!!  When My Husband Asked Me to Sign in His Own House, His Mother Smiled, but Her Face Changed After My Answer

Ethan nodded, although his eyes remained on me.

“I will be beside them.”

“You performed the surgery. That does not give you the right to claim fatherhood.”

“I am not asking for anything. I only want the truth.”

That evening, when we stood behind the glass beside the babies’ incubators, Victoria called her lawyer. I heard her voice.

“If this letter contains that recording, we must destroy everything,” she said. “Before Hanna or Ethan realize where the original is kept.”

Cold passed through my body.

Ethan heard that too.

“What recording are you talking about?” he asked.

Victoria slowly lowered the phone.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“No, Mother. For the first time I know what I am doing.”

That night the hospital security service told me that someone had been trying to enter my room. The face could not be seen on the camera, only a black glove and a brown folder.

My lawyer, Leon Morris, managed to arrive in the morning. He put the folder on the table and opened the lock.

“Hanna, this is the last chance. If we show now what they have hidden for five years, there will be no turning back.”

Ethan entered the room.

“I want to hear everything.”

Victoria followed behind him, together with two guards.

Leon took out the first sheet, but before he could speak, the hospital director locked the door and said:

“The police have forbidden everyone from leaving the building.”

Victoria leaned toward me.

“If you open this, Hanna, your children still will not be able to protect you.”

Leon took a small memory card out of the folder and placed it on the table.

“First we will read the letter,” he said. “Then we will find out whose voice this belongs to…”

“Then we will find out whose voice this belongs to…” Leon finished and placed the small memory card on the table.

Only the distant signals of the incubators could be heard in the room. My boy was fighting the oxygen tube, while my girl moved her tiny fingers as if she were looking for someone in a dream.

Leon unfolded the letter.

“Ethan, if you are reading this letter, it means that Victoria has finally lost control. Five years ago I did not transfer the money. The transfer was made by her assistant, Daniel Rose, on Victoria’s direct orders. I learned this because Daniel asked to meet me out of remorse.”

Ethan stood motionless.

Victoria raised her hand.

“This is fake.”

“Let us listen to the whole letter first,” Leon told her.

“Victoria told me that if I did not separate from you, she would put my brother in prison. Daniel left me bank statements and a recording of the conversation. I placed the original in an emergency safe. The copy is on this card. I did not betray you, Ethan. You simply became the man your mother was creating you to be.”

My chest hurt as if the rain from five years earlier were falling on my shoulders again.

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Is this true?”

Victoria’s lips froze.

“I was protecting you.”

“You destroyed the woman I loved.”

“She was waiting for your money!”

“Then why did you need a false transfer?”

Victoria could not find an answer.

Leon put the card into the computer. A hoarse woman’s voice sounded in the room.

“Daniel, Hanna must not find out anything. Ethan must believe that she stole.”

The second voice trembled.

!!!  After my father’s operation, my stepmother humiliated me in the corridor, but when an unknown doctor appeared, Victoria’s smile disappeared

“Mrs. Caldwell, this is a crime.”

“This is a family matter. If you need your job, you will do it.”

Then Victoria’s voice sounded more clearly.

“Ethan will never choose her if he thinks she sold her dignity.”

My hands began to tremble. Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down.

“I did this,” he whispered. “I accused you.”

“Yes.”

“You told me the truth.”

“Yes.”

“And I did not listen to you.”

This time I gave no answer. It was no longer necessary.

Leon opened the second folder.

“Now we need to talk about the children.”

Ethan raised his head.

“What children?”

“The results of the genetic examination performed before their birth. Hanna, you told me that you were not sure who the father was. But the old clinic records showed that five years ago, one week before you and Ethan separated, both of you had participated in a frozen-embryo program.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“We were planning this together.”

“Victoria removed all the documents from the clinic,” Leon said. “But one copy remained in the doctor’s personal archive. The twins are from your shared embryos.”

Ethan looked toward the incubators.

“My children…”

“Our children,” I said.

Victoria put her hand against the wall.

“This family must not fall into her hands.”

Leon placed the phone on the table.

“This is no longer only a family conflict. Bank fraud, threats, and illegal acquisition of medical records have been confirmed.”

At that moment my phone rang. The number was unknown.

“Do not answer,” Ethan said.

But the ringing was already sounding loudly.

I picked up.

On the other side was Daniel Rose’s voice.

“Hanna, I can prove everything. But Victoria is already coming to kill me. If you want to receive the full copy of the recording, you must come to the old station warehouse tonight.”

“Where is the original?” I asked.

“There. And there is one more thing you need to know. Victoria has already prepared a court order to take the children. She says that you will give them up because you will not be able to pay the hospital bills.”

The call ended.

Ethan looked at the phone. Victoria, meanwhile, was smiling slowly, as if she still controlled all of this.

But she did not know that Daniel’s recording was already being stored live in the hospital’s legal archive, while police cars were stopping in front of the building…
