Part 4 — I left my job because my director ruined my life, but when she saw me with a suitcase at her door at night, her hands began to tremble

At that very moment Elena took the phone from me.

“Do not delete it,” she told me. “It is evidence.”

“Who sent it?”

“The number is hidden, but we will find out.”

Lucy stood behind my back and covered one eye of the doll with her finger. I looked at her small shoulders and felt fear growing in me, but this time I did not give fear the right to control me.

“She will stay with me,” I said.

Vivian immediately nodded.

“I will leave.”

“No.”

“Daniel, if the message is from them, being with you increases the danger.”

“They are already in my house. They broke down the door. I can no longer imagine anything worse than this.”

Elena checked the windows and asked the policemen to remain around the house. Martin Weil stood in the yard, his hands bound behind his back. Rain struck his face, but he was still smiling.

“You do not know whom you are fighting,” he shouted.

I went to the door.

“And you do not know how long I have no longer been afraid.”

His smile lost its strength for the first time.

The next morning, at six o’clock, Vivian received a call. Her lawyer told her that the company’s board was convening an emergency meeting and intended to remove her from her position.

“They want to place all the responsibility on you,” Elena said.

Vivian stood by the kitchen window. The rain had stopped, but drops of water were still running down the glass.

“I will not sign anything,” she said.

“You have already signed a lot.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“I know.”

This time the word sounded different. It was no longer a shield. It was an admission.

Martin chose another strategy that same morning. He spread information in the media as if Vivian were psychologically unstable, while I had left work angrily and was now trying to take revenge. They showed my house on television. They almost revealed Lucy’s school address as well.

I turned off the screen.

“You will not withstand this,” Vivian told me.

“All my life I thought I had to deal with the chaos of your company. This is simply noise.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Minha sogra me queimou diante do meu marido, mas quando o médico fez uma pergunta, o sorriso dela desapareceu

“And I thought I could deal with everything alone.”

“You are not alone. But that does not mean you can control everyone again.”

She looked toward me.

“Can you forgive me?”

“Not yet.”

“That is a fair answer.”

“But I can tell the truth.”

That same day the court ordered an investigation to begin in the company. The police sealed the forty-first floor of the office. In Martin Weil’s car they found a small device with which my phone and Lucy’s school-bus route were being monitored.

When I learned this, my hands went cold.

Vivian said nothing. She only sat down on the chair.

“Did you know about this?” I asked.

“I suspected.”

“You suspected and did not tell me?”

“I was afraid that if I told you, you would leave the house and they would watch you.”

“You took away my right to choose again.”

Vivian lowered her head.

“Yes.”

That evening Elena played the recording submitted to the court. About ten people sat in the room, but Martin’s voice was clear enough for everyone.

“Daniel Reyes will sign anything because of the child.”

When I heard my own voice in the recording, something caught in my throat. I had really said those words, but with another meaning. Martin arranged them as if I had weakness and not responsibility.

Vivian sat beside me.

“Turn it off,” I said quietly.

“No,” she answered. “Everyone must hear it for the first time.”

Martin’s lawyer lowered his head. Richard Cross sat in the chair as if his body had suddenly become heavy.

The recording ended.

Silence fell over the room.

Martin heard his own words once more and then understood that there was no one left there whom he could convince that all of this was someone else’s voice. He covered his ears with his hands.

And I felt nothing that could be called victory.

Only exhaustion.

In a few days the company’s board kept Vivian in her position until the investigation ended, but she herself left the director’s chair. Journalists asked why.

“Because power without responsibility is only a beautiful room,” she said.

Then the journalists began asking me questions.

“Mr. Reyes, what do you demand from her?”

“Nothing. I only want no one to hide the truth anymore on the grounds that they are protecting me.”

Vivian heard this.

For the first time she did not interrupt me.

Two weeks later my house looked empty. In the guest room stood Vivian’s suitcase, which she had been unable to take. Inside remained only two dresses, several folders, and a small white umbrella.

I put the umbrella by the door.

Lucy stuck a colored sticker on the suitcase.

“Now this is no longer dangerous,” she told me.

“No. It is just a suitcase.”

“Then why don’t you throw it away?”

I could not think of an answer.

Probably because some things are no longer only things. They preserve the weight of that night.

Three months later the court found Martin Weil guilty of financial crimes, surveillance, and falsifying evidence. Richard Cross made a deal and had to leave the company. The money he had taken from people entered the process of being returned.

Vivian sold her house and moved to a small town by the sea. There she created a charitable foundation for children whose parents, because of overloaded work, had to go alone to the doctor and school.

And I began working at a small consulting firm. I no longer woke at five in the morning in fear of the call. At six in the evening I was home. On Fridays Lucy and I baked pizza together, and she put too much cheese on the dough.

On the first snow she drew a house on the window. Two people stood on the roof, and between them was a large yellow sun.

“Is this you and me?” I asked.

“Me and you and that woman too.”

“Vivian?”

“Yes. Only now she is not strict.”

“How do you know?”

“Because once she smiled at me quietly.”

Lucy had a small, unbelievable faith that people could change. I was still learning to believe it.

Six months later I received a letter from Vivian. The envelope contained only one sentence: “If you ever can, I want us simply to drink coffee, and this time I will hide nothing from you.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Vierzehn Stunden nach unserer Hochzeit warf mein Mann mir einen fettigen Lappen ins Gesicht, und seine Mutter hörte auf zu lächeln

I looked at the letter for a long time.

Then I called Elena.

“Is there any legal risk?”

“No, if the meeting is in a public place.”

“Then I will agree.”

I wrote to Vivian: “I agree to coffee. But only on one condition.”

Her answer came soon.

“What is the condition?”

“If you are afraid of something, you tell me immediately. If you need help, you ask for help. No one will control my life in my name anymore.”

A few minutes later she wrote to me:

“I will try.”

It was not a great promise.

But this time it was the truth.

That night, when Lucy fell asleep, I went to the door. Vivian’s black suitcase was still standing there. Lucy’s yellow sticker, with a sun drawn on it, was stuck to it.

I opened the suitcase, put her things into a box, and left the umbrella outside, beside the door. The rain was no longer falling.

Then I closed the box.

I attached the sun drawn in Lucy’s picture to the window.

That night, for the first time, I was no longer waiting for a knock at the door.

And silence no longer frightened me.

Missed the beginning?
