Part 4 — Mother Gave the House to Her Sister on Her Birthday and Told Me There Was No Longer a Place for Me in the Family — Then the Agent Lost His Face

Own voice.

The next morning, at seven ten, my phone was already ringing constantly.

Steven called me first.

“Claire, the bank has temporarily frozen the fund’s accounts.”

“What did Mother do?”

“She is trying to present every transfer as a mistake. But her lawyer no longer represents her.”

A few minutes later Vanessa wrote to me: “Talk to me, please.”

The third call was from my mother’s number.

I did not answer.

Daniel was standing in the kitchen and pouring coffee. Morning fog had settled on the window glass.

“If you want, answer,” he told me.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

Those were the most difficult words I said that morning.

At nine o’clock I went to the lawyer’s office. The sound of my shoes rang clearly on the marble floor of the building. I was still holding the brown folder. I put the copper lighthouse key inside so that I would not fidget with it in my hand all the way.

Alan Price was waiting for me there. He was a fifty-year-old man who always spoke as if every room belonged to him. Now his jacket was open and there were hollows under his eyes.

“I can no longer represent Margaret,” he told me.

“Why?”

“Because three years ago she told me that you had signed a waiver of all rights to the fund. I had never seen this document. Yesterday I learned that the signature in the file is forged.”

“Whose signature is the forgery?”

Alan lowered his head.

“Her employee’s. But the instruction came from Margaret.”

I was not happy.

It may sound strange, but my mother’s downfall did not feel like victory. It felt more like a house in which a fire had been extinguished and they were now searching for smoke hidden in the walls.

“Will the case go to court?” I asked.

“Most likely. But first a financial examination will be conducted.”

At that moment the door opened and Mother entered.

She was wearing yesterday’s dress, although she no longer had the brooch. Her shoulders were drooping. Vanessa was standing behind her.

Mother looked directly at me.

“Talk to me alone.”

“Everyone will remain in this room.”

“I am your mother.”

“That is precisely why I knew that when left alone, you would again use everything against me.”

!!!  Me escondí bajo la cama durante mi noche de bodas y escuché un plan que hizo temblar la mano de mi esposo

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Mother sat down in front of me.

“I only wanted Vanessa to have a protected life.”

“A protected life cannot be built on a lie.”

“You were always stronger.”

“No. You simply gave Vanessa everything, while you gave me responsibility.”

Mother opened her bag and took out her phone.

“Listen to this.”

She turned on the recording.

For the first time I heard my yesterday’s voice from the other side of the room. It was clear, calm, and even seemed strange to me.

“Claire, you will receive nothing.”

Then my voice:

“Happy birthday, Mother.”

Mother stopped the recording.

“Did you want to humiliate me like this?”

“No. You humiliated me. I simply did not respond.”

Alan clasped his hands on the chair.

“Mrs. Holloway, this recording shows a public statement, but the main problem is the financial documents.”

Mother looked at him.

“Are you on her side too?”

“I am on the side of the facts. And the facts are against you.”

This was the first time Mother heard her own words from a stranger. Her face had the expression of someone who had a door close in the room and leave the key inside.

Then the months were not fast.

There were hearings, bank statements, experts’ questions, and long letters from lawyers. The investigation established that Mother had been transferring money from the fund’s accounts to her own account for years. The money was used partly for Vanessa’s apartment rent, expensive purchases, and credit debts.

Vanessa said that she knew nothing.

I believed her only after the bank documents confirmed her words.

Mother accepted responsibility for the financial violations. The court deprived her of the right to manage property and ordered her to return the money to the injured fund. She did not go to prison because she returned part of the money, and her age, health, and cooperation were taken into account.

But she would never again become the owner of this house.

The most painful moment in court was neither the statement nor the decision.

It happened one week earlier, when Mother’s bedroom was emptied.

I entered the room to sort through her things. Only white hangers remained in the closet. On the small table in front of the mirror, Mother had left one photograph.

In the photograph were Father, Vanessa, and me. I was six years old and holding a small copper lighthouse. Father was smiling. Mother was looking toward the camera, but she was holding Vanessa’s hand.

Mother had written one sentence on the back of the photograph:

“I did not want it to end this way.”

I held the paper for a long time.

I could have torn it.

I did not tear it.

I put the photograph back in its frame and stored it in its box.

Three months later I began living in the house.

I no longer worked in Newport Beach. I began working at a small architectural studio near the coast. In the mornings I rode my bicycle there, and in the evenings I sat on the terrace and listened to the sound of the ocean.

Daniel arranged a small workspace for me in one room of the house. I hung my father’s old drawing on the wall. Vanessa called me once a week. At first we spoke only about documents, and then about ordinary things.

One evening she brought her five-year-old son, Noah, to me. The child was holding a colored sheet of paper.

“Aunt Claire, I drew this for you.”

A house was drawn on the paper. Its glass walls were made with curved lines, and above it was an enormous sun.

“Does this house belong to everyone?” I asked.

Noah shrugged.

“No. It belongs to whoever treats each other well here.”

Daniel looked at me from the kitchen.

And for the first time I laughed without anything inside me hurting.

At the beginning of winter, Mother sent me a letter.

“I want us to sit once, at least, as mother and daughter. I am no longer asking you for the house. I am asking only for a meeting.”

I put the letter on the kitchen table.

I thought for two days.

On the third day I wrote back.

“A meeting is possible. But not in order to justify the past. If you listen, I will come.”

We met in a small café in the old part of the city. Mother was very changed when I saw her. She was not wearing expensive jewelry. Her hands lay on the table, and she was clasping her fingers together.

!!!  Ich ging mitten in der Nacht, nachdem er meinen Abschied verspottet hatte – doch als er mein leeres Zimmer sah, erstarrte sein Gesicht

“Have you forgiven me?” she asked.

“I am still learning what forgiveness means.”

“And the house?”

“The house is now my responsibility. But I will no longer use it as a weapon against you.”

She nodded.

“Vanessa visits me.”

“I know.”

“Will you come too someday?”

Outside the window, the first snow began to fall. Snow was rare in the coastal city, so everyone stopped in the street.

“Maybe,” I said. “If you also stop trying to turn my love into an obligation.”

Mother lowered her eyes.

“I will try.”

That promise was not enough.

But that day it was enough for me to leave peacefully.

When I returned home, I took my father’s lighthouse key from the drawer. The small scratch was still visible on it. I placed it on the desk, beside Noah’s drawing.

Outside, the waves could be heard.

The door was open.

This time I no longer needed a key to enter inside.

But I kept it anyway.

Some doors should not be locked so that they may open again someday.

And some because you finally understand — the key has always been in your hand.

Missed the beginning?
