Part 4 — Two Years Later, My Wife Returned with a Strange Child, and I Opened the Door — Amazement Froze on the Neighbor’s Face

The telephone trembled again in my hand.

Vera hugged Lionka to her chest.

“Let’s call the police,” she said.

“I already called them,” Archil answered. “When I was leaving the clinic.”

His voice was calm, but fear could be seen in his eyes.

Dato lived in the city. For two years he told everyone that he was settling the matters concerning our family’s land. In reality, he was waiting for the house that Vera and I were building together.

Before law enforcement officers arrived, Dato called four more times.

At last I answered.

“Don’t touch the child,” I told him.

“Now you remember you’re a father?” he sneered. “You’d better sign and disappear again.”

“What should I sign?”

“The house. The land. Everything that is in your name.”

“And if I don’t sign?”

The sound of a car engine could be heard behind him.

“Then you will lose Vera again.”

I ended the call.

At that same moment, two law enforcement officers entered the room. Water dripped from one man’s wet hat, while the other held a dark file in his hand.

“We listened to everything,” the senior officer said. “We officially transferred the recording. A team is already going to Dato’s house.”

Vera sat down on a chair.

“If they arrest him, will they take Lionka away from us?”

“No,” I answered. “This time no one will take him away from us.”

At night Dato was arrested at the entrance to our village. In the car he had a forged power of attorney, documents prepared in the child’s name, and a small bottle with sleeping medicine.

At the trial he said that he had done everything for my well-being.

And for the first time I heard a recording of my own voice, which Archil had secretly recorded at the clinic.

“We will take the child, and Ivane will become guilty,” Dato was saying. “Vera will keep silent because she is afraid of losing her son.”

!!!  Nach meiner vierzehnstündigen Schicht öffnete ein Fremder ihre Wohnungstür – und als meine Verlobte erschien, verschwand ihr Lächeln

I listened to my words from outside and realized that it was not a lie, but someone else’s fear, that had taken two years from me.

Dato sat in the courtroom and avoided my eyes.

“This is my family,” he said.

“No,” I answered. “A family is the one who does not hide a child.”

The judge declared Dato’s documents invalid. He was sentenced to imprisonment for attempting to kidnap a child and for forged documents. The clinic’s chief doctor was also arrested. Archil remained as a witness and told the whole truth.

Vera did not forgive me immediately.

Nor did I ask her to.

After the trial we remained alone in a small room. By the window, Lionka was rolling a wooden car.

“Why did you accept me?” Vera asked me.

“Because you came back.”

“Because of the child?”

“Because of both of you. But trust will not return in one day.”

She lowered her head.

“Will you still wait for me?”

“This time you must stay.”

When we returned to the village, our old house seemed strangely empty to me. Dato’s things were gone. In the corner of Vera’s room I found one broken photograph—a picture of our wedding, which she had taken down from the wall on the day she left.

I placed the old copper key beside the child’s bed.

“What is this for?” Lionka asked me.

“It opens a door that was locked for a long time.”

“What is there?”

“Our truth.”

Several weeks later the court decision arrived. Lionka’s surname was officially returned to him. Vera no longer needed to wake every morning in fear. And I began working at the village woodworking shop and returned home in the evening without needing to look toward the road anymore.

Lionka was growing quickly.

Every morning he jumped onto my boots and told me that we would build a snow fortress in the yard. Vera baked bread. Sometimes we were silent. But this silence was no longer the old one. Fear no longer sat inside it.

Three months later the first snow came.

Lionka drew a house on the window. The house had two doors, one small window, and a man standing by the door.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“You,” he answered. “You are not waiting anymore. You are already home.”

That evening I received a letter from Dato. It was short.

“I only wanted to protect you. Sign for me and I will return everything to you.”

I folded the paper in two.

Vera looked at me.

“Will you answer?”

“No.”

“You won’t tell him anything at all?”

“I have already told him everything he needed to know.”

I threw the letter into the stove. The fire first ate the corner, then his name disappeared.

Lionka was waiting for me in the yard. In his hand he held the little wooden car that he had rolled along the clinic floor when we learned the truth.

I took the copper key from my pocket and gave it to the child.

“Now you keep it.”

“Will I lose it?”

“No. It is the key to the house.”

He wrapped his little fingers around the key.

That night, for the first time, I did not sleep on the kitchen sofa. I lay down in our room, while Lionka’s peaceful breathing could be heard from the other room.

Outside, snow was falling.

I left the gate open.

And the key hung on Lionka’s chest.

This time no one was leaving.
